India Finishes Fifth in Osijek Shotgun World Championships

  • India finished fifth with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship Shotgun in Osijek, Croatia.
  • The Men's and Women's Skeet teams could not make it past the qualifying rounds on the final day, but India will go away happy with the Paris 2024 Olympics quota place that they earned in the Men's Trap via Bhowneesh Mendiratta, a pleasant addition to a creditable medal haul as per National Rifle Association of India.
  • Shotgun powerhouses Italy, Great Britain and USA, took the top three spots with China prevailing over India on the medal tally by virtue of winning a silver more. Both the Asian giants had the same medal haul.

National Games End at Surat in Gujarat

  • The 36th National Games concluded with a glittering concluding ceremony at Surat, Gujarat chaired by vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar.
  • Lok Sabha Speaker Om Prakash Birla, Governor of Gujarat Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Sports Minister Harsh Sanghvi, dignitaries of the sports world, and a large number of players participated in the ceremony.
  • Services topped the medal tally with a total of 128 medals including 61 gold, 35 silver, and 32 bronze medals. Maharashtra secured the number 2 position with 140 medals including 39 gold and Haryana number 3 with 116 medals with 38 Gold. The winners were awarded on the occasion. Harshika Ramchandran from Karnataka won the best female player of the 36h National Games and Sajan Prakash from Kerala won the Best Male player of the games.
  • About 7500 players from 36 states and union territories participated in 36 types of sports competitions held in six cities of the state.

Discus Thrower Kamalpreet Kaur Banned for Three Years for Use of Steroid

  • Top Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur, who achieved stardom for her exploits at the Tokyo Games, was banned for three year for using prohibited substance Stanozolol, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has announced.
  • Her ban will be effective from March 29, 2022.
  • Kamalpreet was handed a provisional suspension in May this year after testing positive for the steroid, which was found in her sample that AIU collected at Patiala on March 7.
  • Kamalpreet had finished sixth at the Tokyo Games in a splendid show.
  • Kaur had made a rapid rise last year when she set a national record of 65.06m in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Launches 'Football for All'

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched 'Football for All' in the state to take the culture of football to the grassroots.
  • The Programme has been initiated by FIFA in Odisha in partnership with the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) & Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS). Over 43 thousand footballs would be distributed to children in about 2000 schools. This is the first such programme of FIFA in India that aims at promoting football among school children.
  • Director of 'Football For Schools', FIFA, Fatimata Sow Sidbe joining over virtual platform appreciated the role of Chief Minister and Odisha Government for promotion of sports in Odisha. She said that football is a powerful platform to change society. She said that 'Football for All' is a FIFA vision to make football truly global.

Manipur Beats Odisha to Retain Women's Crown in National Games Football

  • Manipur duly retained their National Games women's football crown by beating Odisha 2-0 in the final at the Eka Arena Transstadia. Both goals came in the first half.
  • It was a facile and expected win for the north-eastern state which has been dominating the National championships in recent years.

Anurag Thakur Inaugurates Water Sports Center in HP

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurated a Water Sports Center in Koldam Barmana, Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh.
  • The centre would be dedicated to training athletes in water sports like rowing, canoeing and kayaking.
  • The Minister said that 40 players would be chosen who would take part in rowing, kayaking and canoeing. There are state of the art equipments and boys and girls would get hostel and training facilities.
  • The Water Sports Centre, the very first of its kind in Himachal Pradesh, was jointly initiated by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also exchanged between SAI and NTPC during the event.

37th National Games: Goa to Host Games in October 2023

  • The Indian Olympic Association confirmed that Goa would host the 37th edition of the National Games in October next year (2023). The state government of Goa also conveyed its in-principle approval to IOA to host the National Games in 2023.
  • Notably: The 37th National Games would be decided keeping in view the dates of the 19th Asian Games, which will be held from 23rd September to 8th October 2022 in Hangzhou, China.
  • Goa got the rights to host the National Games in 2008 but hasn't been able to host the games for a number of reasons. Goa was set to host the 36th edition of the National Games but the IOA had to shift the venue to Gujrat, who agreed to conduct the event in a short span of time.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Mohammed Rizwan Seal ICC Player of the Month Crowns for September

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the winners of the ICC Player of the Month awards for September 2022. India's inspirational captain Harmanpreet Kaur was named the recipient of the ICC Women's Player of the Month award, while Pakistan ace Mohammad Rizwan claimed the ICC Men's Player of the Month award.
  • Harmanpreet received the award for her memorable showing in the ODI series in England.
  • The Indian skipper beat her deputy Smriti Mandhana and Bangladesh counterpart Nigar Sultana, who also came up with some stunning displays.
  • Rizwan defeated Indian left-arm spinner Axar Patel and Australian all-rounder Cameroon Green to claim the award. Rizwan was in stunning form in September, churning out some sizzling performances in T20Is.

India Deaf Cricket Team Beats S. Africa to Win DICC T20 Champions Trophy

  • India Deaf Cricket Team was the only undefeated team in the tournament where India came up with a spirited show with both ball and bat as Men in Blue successfully posted the target of 141 runs and maintained their excellent track record by defeating South Africa by 39 runs in the final match and secured the DICC T20 Champions Trophy at Malek stadium, Ajman, UAE.

Novak Djokovic Clinches 90th ATP Title in Astana Open, Kazakhstan

  • Tennis star Novak Djokovic clinched his 90th ATP title after registering straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of Astana Open in Kazakhstan.
  • The 21-time Grand Slam champion from Serbia beat his Greek opponent 6-3, 6-4.
  • It was the Wimbledon champion's fourth title of the year, including Rome and Tel Aviv.
  • With the impressive win in Astana, the Serbian player joined Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the list of players in Open Era with 90 or more ATP titles.
  • In men's doubles summit clash at the Astana open, Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic captured their fifth tour-level title of the season, downing Frenchmen Adrian Mannarino and Fabrice Martin 6-4, 6-2.

Pooja Patel Becomes First Athlete to Win Gold in Yogasana

  • At the 36th National Games, Pooja Patel of Gujarat became the first athlete to win gold in Yogasana. Yogasana is one of the five sports played at the National Games this year for the first time. This Indian indigenous sport made its debut at the Khelo India University Games earlier this year.
