Yuvraj Singh Named Brand Ambassador of T20 World Cup for the Blind

  • The Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) announced former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh as its brand ambassador for the 3rd T20 World Cup for the Blind to be held in India in December. Ajay Kumar Reddy B2 (Andhra Pradesh) would lead the Indian team while Venkateswara Rao Dunna – B2 (Andhra Pradesh) would be the vice-captain.
  • The World Cup matches will be held from December 6 to 17. The participating countries for the 3rd T20 World Cup for the Blind are India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • The World Cup is an initiative of the Samarthanam Trust for the disabled, which has been organizing this championship since 2012. Samarthanam perceives sports as a medium to improve inclusion and encourage persons with disabilities on various fronts.

Formula-1 Racing: Max Verstappen Wins US Grand Prix 2022

  • Belgium's Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing won the 2022 Formula 1 Aramco United States Grand Prix 2022 which was held at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, United States (US). With this, he equalled Germany's Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher's record of 13 wins in a Formula 1 season. He defeated the UK's Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes. Hamilton had to settle for second place, with Mercedes' wait for a 2022 victory continuing, while Leclerc salvaged a podium finish for Ferrari as the Italian team mathematically dropped out of contention for the constructors' crown.

Indian Shooter Swapnil Kusale Wins India's 3rd Paris 2024 Olympics Quota

  • Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale won India's third Paris 2024 Olympics quota place at the ISSF World Championship in Cairo, Egypt. It was Kusale's fourth-place finish in the men's 50 meter rifle 3 positions event that earned him the quota. Kusale, who shot a qualification score of 593 to qualify for the eight-shooter final at the second spot, was in contention for the gold-medal match too but a low 8.2 in his final shot in the eighth series in the final denied him a medal. He is also an ISSF World Cup gold medalist.

Fifth Khelo India Youth Games to be Held in Madhya Pradesh

  • Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur said that the 5th edition of Khelo India Youth Games would be held in Madhya Pradesh from 31 January to 11 February, 2023. Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan was present on the occasion.
  • The upcoming edition of the Khelo India Youth Games would feature a total of 27 disciplines; water sports being included for the first time in the history of the games. New disciplines like Canoe Slalom, Kayaking, Canoeing and Rowing will also feature alongside the usual sports and the indigenous games. The Games will take place across eight cities of Madhya Pradesh - Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Mandla, Khargone (Maheshwar) and Balaghat.

  • World champion from Norway Magnus Carlsen sealed the overall Meltwater Champions Chess Tour title for the second year running, this time with an event to spare, after storming into the semi-finals of the Aimchess Rapid.

Ramita Jindal Wind Gold in 10 Meter Air Rifle Women Junior Event in Cairo

  • India's Ramita Jindal was crowned world champion in 10 meter Air Rifle Women Junior event at International Shooting Sport Federation, ISSF World Championship Rifle/Pistol in Cairo, Egypt; defeats China's Ying Shen 16-12.
  • Tied 12-12 in the gold match, Ramita shot 10.8 and 10.7 to secure the gold as the Chinese responded with 9.8 and 10.6. Ramita had topped the second stage of qualification after eventual bronze medallist, Tilottama Sen had topped qualification with 633.4.

Indian Junior Women's Team Wins 10m Air Pistol Gold Medal at ISSF

  • India's junior women's 10m air pistol team comprising Esha Singh, Shikha Narwal and Varsha Singh won gold medal at the ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Championship 2022 in Cairo, Egypt. The Indian women beat China's Zhao Nan, Wang Siyu and Shen Yiyao by a 16-6 score line in the gold medal match to clinch top podium finish. This was India's sixth gold medal at the ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Championship 2022, two of which came in the senior competitions while the remaining four were won by junior shooters. India are currently second on the ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Championship 2022 medals tally with 15 medals – six gold, three silver and six bronze. China top the list with 32 medals, which include 17 gold.

FIFA: Tazuni unveiled as mascot for 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

  • Tazuni, a fun, football-loving penguin was unveiled as the Official Mascot of the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023. Tazuni would become an important symbol for the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand, appearing on official tournament merchandise and media platforms, as well as in real life in community activities ahead of the event.
  • Tazuni, a 15-year-old midfielder whose story involves her falling in love with football after playing with a group of children on a beach, is set to feature on merchandise, media platforms and community activities in the build-up to the FIFA Women's World Cup. The name Tazuni is a fusion of the Tasman Sea, the home of penguins and Unity, which is the key value of the event.

Javelin Thrower, DP Manu Bags Gold at National Open Athletics Championships

  • D. P. Manu created a new meet record in men's javelin with a best throw of 81.23m at the 61st National Open athletics championships at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru, Karanata.
  • It was nowhere close to his personal best (84.35m) but with less-than-ideal preparation, he wasn't allowed to practise at the venue ahead of the competition, and under wet conditions, the Services athlete hailing from Belur, Karnataka, showed his worth yet again.
  • Manu's opening salvo was an impressive 80.32m, taking him past Ravinder Singh Khaira's previous meet record of 79.04m set in 2016. The 22-year-old bettered it with 80.50m off his third throw before finishing with a high of 81.23m.

Sajan Bhanwala Becomes 1st Indian to Win Medal at U23 Worlds, Takes Bronze

  • Sajan Bhanwala became the first Indian Greco Roman wrestler to win a medal at the Under-23 World Championship when he edged past Ukraine's Dmytro Vasetskyi on 'criteria' to emerge winner in the bronze play-off.
  • It was the Ukrainian who pulled off a four-pointer on the edge of the circle for a solid start but Bhanwala bounced back immediately with a strong move that got him into a position from where he could pin his rival.

Irish Professional Bernard Dunne is Indian Boxing's New High Performance Director

  • Former Irish professional boxer Bernard Dunne was named the high performance director (HPD) for Indian boxing. Dunne, who had a five-year (2017-2022) stint with the Irish Athletic Boxing Association, replaced Santiago Nieva.
  • During Dunne's tenure with the Ireland team, Kellie Harrington emerged World (2018, Delhi) and Olympic (2021, Tokyo) champion, while Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O'Rourke won golds at this year's World championships in Istanbul and Aidan Walsh secured a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.
  • Dunne, who has bagged 13 national titles, joined the Indian boxing elite programme at Patiala. He won the WBA World Championship in 2009 and the European Championship in 2007.
  • Dunne led the Irish high-performance boxing team from 2017 to 2022.

Long jumper Shaili Singh Wins Gold Medal on Final Day of National Athletics Open Championships

  • Teenaged Shaili Singh showed yet another glimpse of her brimming potential by winning her first National Open athletics gold with a leap of 6.41m in the women's long jump event at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • L. Sruthilekshmi and Nayana James , two long jumpers from Kerala, clinched the silver and bronzr, respectively after recording identical jumps of 6.22m. The silver went to Sruhilekshmi because she did not foul in any of her attempts while Nayana committed two fouls.
