Ahmed al-Sharaa is Syria's Transitional President

  • Syria's de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa was named President for the "transitional period", seven weeks after he led the rebel offensive that overthrew Bashar al-Assad.
  • Rebel military commander Hassan Abdul Ghani also announced the cancellation of Syria's 2012 Constitution and the dissolution of the former regime's parliament, army and security agencies.
  • As President, Sharaa would form an interim legislative council to help govern until a new constitution is approved.

Lee Zeldin Confirmed as Trump's Pick for Environmental Protection Agency

  • President Donald Trump's nominee to head the US Environmental Protection Agency was confirmed by the Senate, drawing cheers from the fossil fuel industry and sparking alarm among green groups.
  • Lee Zeldin, a former US congressman from New York, has committed to Trump's campaign pledges of boosting US energy dominance and rolling back environmental regulations enacted under former President Joe Biden.
  • Lee Zeldin nomination was confirmed by a 56-42 vote.

  • Sridhar Vembu stepped down as Zoho Corporation's CEO and took on the role of Chief Scientist, focusing on research and development. In his place, Shailesh Kumar Davey, a co-founder of Zoho Corporation was appointed as the new group CEO.

Cabinet Approves Rs. 16,300 Crore National Critical Mineral Missio

  • The Union Cabinet approved the National Critical Mineral Mission (CMM) with an outlay of Rs. 16,300 crore. This initiative is aimed at addressing the critical need for minerals that are essential for key technologies and defence manufacturing. The CMM seeks to boost the domestic production of critical minerals, reduce dependence on imports, and enhance India's resource security by fostering both onshore and offshore mining activities.
  • The mission will address the entire value chain of critical minerals, from exploration and mining to beneficiation, processing, and recovery from end-of-life products. With a focus on critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, copper, nickel, and rare earth elements, the mission also aims to streamline regulatory processes, incentivise exploration, and develop a national stockpile of these minerals. By promoting both public and private sector participation, the mission is poised to make India self-reliant in critical mineral resources.

Both champions represented the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and delivered exceptional performances in their respective finals.
  • Manush Shah defeated Payas Jain with a 4-1 scoreline (10-12, 11-6, 11-6, 12-10, 11-8).
  • Diya Chitale defeated two-time national champion Sreeja Akula in a hard-fought 4-3 battle (10-12, 8-11, 13-11, 12-10, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9).

Australia Clinches ICC Women's Championship Trophy

  • Australia has once again asserted its dominance in women's cricket by winning the ICC Women's Championship for the third consecutive time. The team was presented with the prestigious ICC Women's Championship Trophy in Melbourne after emerging victorious in the 10-team competition that serves as a pathway to the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025. Captain Alyssa Healy received the trophy from Cricket Australia Chair and ICC Director Mike Baird.
  • The championship, first introduced in 2014, has played a crucial role in expanding the women's game and ensuring more frequent bilateral series. The 2022-25 cycle saw Australia securing the top position with 39 points from 24 matches, followed by India, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, who also qualified directly for the 2025 Women's World Cup. The remaining teams will compete in a Qualifier tournament to secure the final two spots.
  • The first two editions (2014-16 & 2017-20) featured 8 teams:

Khelo India Winter Games 2025: Ladakh Finishes on Top

  • Host Ladakh topped the Khelo India Winter Games after securing two gold medals on the final day, swelling their tally to four, as the first phase of the tournament concluded.
  • Thirteen gold medals were at stake in the first phase. The second and final phase will be held in J&K's Gulmarg from February 22 to 25.

'Beating Retreat' Ceremony 2025

  • The Beating Retreat Ceremony marked the formal conclusion of India's Republic Day celebrations. Held every year on January 29 at Vijay Chowk, New Delhi, this historic event was a spectacular display of India's military traditions, musical excellence, and patriotic fervor. The ceremony saw massed bands from the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Delhi Police, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) performing soulful tunes, creating an ambiance of nostalgia and national pride.
  • The origins of the Beating Retreat Ceremony can be traced back to the early 1950s, when Major Roberts of the Indian Army conceptualised and developed this unique event. The ceremony is deeply rooted in centuries-old military traditions from Europe, where soldiers would stop fighting at sunset, sheath their arms, and return to their camps at the sound of the retreat.
  • In India, the first Beating Retreat ceremony was held in the 1950s, during the state visit of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Since then, it has been institutionalised as an annual event to honour the valour and sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces.

  • The two-day National level meeting with Labour Ministers and Secretaries of States & UTs was held in New Delhi, under the Chairmanship of Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports. 
  • Mandaviya emphasised on the need for undertaking labour reforms, which are crucial for realising the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. He underscored that a fine balance between workers' welfare and industrial growth must remain at the core of all policy decisions.

Global Firepower Ranks World's Most Powerful Air Forces

  • A new analysis by the authoritative website globalfirepower.com spotlighted the global pecking order in aerial military might, evaluating countries based on their total aircraft inventory which encompasses fighter jets, helicopters and support aircraft. According to the report, the world's most formidable air forces are led by the United States, with Russia and China securing the second and third positions, respectively. 
  • India was ranked fourth in this comprehensive assessment, showcasing its significant air power with an inventory of 2.205 aircraft including helicopters, fighter jets and support aircraft. This ranking underscores India's ongoing efforts to modernise and expand its air force capabilities amidst regional security challenges. 
  • Following India, South Korea and Japan were placed fifth and sixth, respectively. 
  • This ranking from globalfirepower.com also reflects broader global trends where countries are increasingly focusing on air superiority to project power defend sovereignty and secure strategic interests. The report serves as a reminder of the ongoing arms race in the skies where technological advancements in stealth electronic warfare and drone operations are reshaping military strategies.

  • Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was conferred with the prestigious Maharaja Hari Singh Award at a grand ceremony held at Satyam Resort, Jammu.
