Despite international pressure and sanctions, particularly from the United States, Maduro's inauguration took place amid widespread controversy and public protests.
  • Maduro, a former bus driver, became president in 2013 after the death of Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's iconic left-wing leader.

Impeached South Korean President Yoon Arrested Over Failed Martial Law Bid

  • South Korean authorities arrested impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over insurrection accusations related to his brief declaration of martial law in December 2024. He is the first sitting President in South Korea's history to be arrested.

ZSI Discovers New Pangolin Species in Arunachal Pradesh

  • Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered a new species of pangolin in Arunachal Pradesh, named the Indo-Burmese pangolin (Manis indoburmanica). This species is genetically distinct from the Chinese and Indian pangolins found in India.
  • It is found at altitudes ranging from 180 to 1830 meters above sea level and has dark brown and olive-brown scales with a pinkish face, typical of other Asian pangolins.
  • This discovery highlights the pressing need for pangolin conservation, as they are among the most trafficked mammals worldwide.

SECL Introduces Post-Retirement Benefit Cell

  • In an initiative aimed at enhancing the welfare of its retired employees, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a Chhattisgarh-based subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), launched a Post-Retirement Benefit (PRB) Cell. The cell, designed to provide a single-window solution for retired employees, reflects SECL's commitment to improving the post-retirement experience of its former workforce. The new PRB Cell consolidates various post-retirement services under one roof, ensuring that retirees no longer need to navigate between multiple departments. The initiative also complements 'Mission Sambandh', an ongoing SECL program aimed at fostering better communication and engagement with stakeholders.

IMGC, GIC Housing Partner to Offer Mortgage Guarantee-backed Home Loans

  • India Mortgage Guarantee Corporation (IMGC) announced a partnership with GIC Housing Finance Ltd (GICHFL) to offer innovative mortgage guarantee-backed home loan products.
  • This strategic collaboration aims to introduce innovative mortgage guarantee-backed home loan products to prospective salaried and self-employed home loan customers, specifically designed to enhance accessibility and affordability in the growing housing finance sector.

DP World, AM Green Ink Pact to Develop Green Fuel Logistics Infra

  • Green hydrogen and ammonia producer AM Green of the Greenko Group, and global logistics major DP World entered into a pact to develop storage and logistics facilities for 2 million tonnes of green fuel per annum.
  • "Under the memorandum of understanding (MOU) DP World and AM Green will jointly develop logistics and storage infrastructure to facilitate the global export of 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia and 1 MTPA of green methanol," AM Green said in a statement Tuesday morning.
  • The logistics infrastructure will include developing port infrastructure across AM Green Net-Zero Industrial Clusters to facilitate global exports, creating bunkering infrastructure across Dubai, India, and Southeast Asia for green ammonia and methanol supplied from AM Green plants.

After Kenya, India Second in List of Banned Athletes with 108 Doping Cases

  • India is currently placed second in the list of countries with the most athletes currently ineligible to participate in international events.
  • According to data made available by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for the year ending December 2024, Kenya tops the list with 119 cases while India is second at 108.
  • Russia is third in the countries with the most ineligible athletes at 73.

Ira Jadhav Smashes 346, Sets Record for Highest U19 Score by an Indian

  • Fourteen-year-old Ira Jadhav scored an unbeaten 346 off 157 balls in the Women's Under-19 One Day Trophy match against Meghalaya. Jadhav smashed 42 fours and 16 sixes and finished with a strike rate of 220.38.
  • This epic knock earned her the distinction of being the first Indian (male or female) to record a triple century in any Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)-organised limited-overs cricket tournament.
  • The record for the highest individual score in a women's U-19 match belongs to South Africa's Lizelle Lee. Playing for Mpumalanga, Lee scored an unbeaten 427 against Kei in 2010.

Amit Shah, Chairs a Regional Conference on 'Drug Trafficking and National Security

  • Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, chaired a regional conference on 'Drug Trafficking and National Security' at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. The Home Minister also launched the Drug Disposal Fortnight, inaugurated the new office complex of Bhopal Zonal Unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and extension of MANAS-2 helpline to all 36 states and Union Territories.
  • The objective of the conference, organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau, is to focus on tackling the growing concern of drug trafficking and its impact on national security, with a special focus on eight states and union territories of northern India.

Union Minister Sonowal Unveils National River Traffic & Navigation System

  • Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, launched the National River Traffic and Navigation System (NRT&NS) during the second meeting of the Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) in Kaziranga, Assam. This initiative aims to enhance the safety and efficiency of inland waterway transportation across India.
  • A significant policy initiative, the Riverine Community Development Scheme, was introduced to improve the socio-economic well-being of coastal communities. This scheme focuses on developing infrastructure, promoting trade and tourism, and providing skill enrichment training to enhance the quality of life for those living along the National Waterways.

Odisha Announces Monthly Pension of Rs. 20,000 & Free Medical Treatment for Emergency Detainees

  • Odisha government announced a monthly pension of Rs. 20,000 for people who were imprisoned during the Emergency of 1975, imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The pension scheme, effective from January 1, follows Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi's pledge on Independence Day to recognise them.
  • Eith this decision Odisha joined several other states, including Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Assam, who have similar pension schemes in place for Emergency detainees.

PM Dedicates 'Hunter-Killer' Submarine to Nation

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated three frontline naval combatants, INS Surat, INS Nilgiri and INS Vaghsheer, to the nation on their commissioning at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.
  • PM Modi said that the commission of the three frontline naval combatants will strengthen India's efforts to achieve "self-reliance" and "being a global leader in defence".
  • As per reports, INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, was constructed in collaboration with the Naval Group of France.
  • Also known as the 'hunter-killer' submarine, INS Vaghsheer is equipped with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, and is capable of both anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare apart from intelligence gathering and mine-laying capabilities.
  • INS Surat, a guided missile destroyer, is one of the largest and most sophisticated destroyers in the world with an indigenous content of 75 per cent.
  • Similarly, INS Nilgiri, the first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, has been designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and incorporates advanced features for enhanced survivability, seakeeping, and stealth, reflecting the next generation of indigenous frigates.

Indian Army Day

  • Indian Army Day is celebrated on January 15 every year. It was on this date in 1949, the Indian Army got its first Army Chief General KM Cariappa. General (later Field Marshal) Cariappa was appointed as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army on January 15, 1949. He was the first Indian to be appointed as Commander-in-Chief. He took over the reins of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India. Cariappa remains one of only two Indian Army officers to hold the Five-star rank of Field Marshal; the other being Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Cariappa led Indian forces on the Western Front during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947.
  • This year (2025) marked the 77th Indian Army Day celebration, embodying this year's (2025) theme, "Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena" (Capable India, Competent Army).
  • Indian Army Day is a tribute to the unwavering courage and sacrifices of the soldiers who dedicate their lives to protecting the nation. It serves as a reminder of their valour and inspires every Indian to embrace a sense of patriotism and unity.

IIT-Bombay Launches e-Postgraduate Diploma in E-mobility

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay announced the launch of a new programme on e-Postgraduate Diploma in E-mobility. The new programme will be of 18-months duration and will be starting in March 2025.
  • The ePG diploma programme is designed and delivered by IIT Bombay faculty with Great Learning as the EdTech partner. Upon successful completion, a graduation ceremony in the IIT Bombay campus will be held and participants will be conferred alumni status.

Karnataka Opposes Draft UGC Guidelines on Vice-Chancellor Appointments

  • Joining the chorus of non-BJP-ruled states, the Karnataka government wrote to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, raising strong objections to the draft University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations, 2025, particularly the provisions regarding the appointment of vice-chancellors. State Higher Education Minister M. C. Sudhakar termed the provisions a direct assault on the federal structure and said they undermined the state's role in higher education governance.

Centre Clears Appointment of Justice Alok Aradhe as Bombay High Court Chief Justice

  • The Central government cleared the proposal to appoint Telangana High Court Chief Justice Alok Aradhe as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
  • The Supreme Court Collegium had earlier in January made the recommendation.
  • Justice Aradhe was appointed as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2009, and as a permanent judge in 2011.
  • He was transferred to the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir in 2016 and served as its Acting Chief Justice for 3 months in 2018. After that, he took oath as a judge of the Karnataka High Court on November 17, 2018 and served as Acting Chief Justice for a few months in 2022.
  • In July 2023, he was appointed as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.
