Army Chief Elected Lebanon's President

  • Lebanon's parliament elected Army Chief Joseph Aoun as the country's new President, bringing an end to a prolonged political deadlock and presidential vacancy.
  • Aoun was elected after two rounds of voting, following extensive efforts by the United States and Saudi Arabia to garner support for him. Both countries have close ties with Aoun, who is aligned with Washington and Riyadh.

RBI Lifts Ban on NBFCs Asirvad Micro Finance and DMI Finance

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lifted the business restrictions imposed on two non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) – Asirvad Micro Finance Limited and DMI Finance Private Limited.
  • The restrictions, issued in October 2024, barred these NBFCs from sanctioning and disbursing loans effective from the close of business on October 21, 2024.
  • Asirvad Micro Finance Limited, a microfinance institution (MFI) registered in Chennai, and DMI Finance Private Limited, an investment and credit company (ICC) based in New Delhi, faced the restrictions due to non-compliance with regulatory guidelines.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Renuka Singh Thakur Rested for Ireland Series

  • Prolific opener Smriti Mandhana was named captain of the Indian women's cricket team for this month's three-match home ODI series against Ireland after regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was rested. Also given a break was pacer Renuka Singh Thakur.
  • The short series against Ireland began on January 10 and all three games will be played at Rajkot.

Union Health Ministry Organises National Workshop on Non-Communicable Diseases

  • The Union Health Ministry in collaboration with the Government of Telangana, successfully hosted a two-days National Workshop on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The workshop, which brought together key stakeholders including Principal Secretaries (Health), Mission Director-National Health Mission and other senior officers from all the States and Union Territories, health professionals, and policymakers from across the country, focused on strengthening strategies for the prevention, screening, management, and treatment of NCDs.

Rajnath Singh Chairs Ambassadors' Round-Table in Delhi in Run up to Aero India 2025

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired an ambassadors' round-table where participants were briefed on major events of Aero India 2025 to be held in February. The 15th edition of 'Aero India' -- Asia's biggest aero show -- is scheduled to be held at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka in Bengaluru, Karnataka from February 10 to 14.

President Droupadi Murmu Confers Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards

  • President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awards during the valedictory session of the PBD Convention in Odisha.
  • A highlight of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention is the presentation of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA). As many as 27 individuals and organisations were honoured this year from countries like the US, Fiji, Guyana, Mauritius, Moldova, Myanmar, Russia and Saudi Arabia.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs had announced the names of the awardees for this year (2025). The awardees include among others Baroness Usha Kumari Prashar from the UK in the field of politics, Dr Sharmila Ford from the US for community service, and Dr. Syed Anwar Khursheed from Saudi Arabia in the field of Medical Science.
  • This prestigious honour is conferred upon Non-Resident Indians, Persons of Indian Origin, or organisations established and run by them.

Goa's 'Bima Sakhi Yojana'

  • Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant launched the 'Bima Sakhi Yojana' under the state's Swayampurna Goa 2.0 initiative. This program aims to empower women by providing them with training and opportunities to become Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) agents, thereby promoting financial literacy and expanding life insurance coverage at the grassroots level.
  • Women aged 18-70 years who have completed at least Class X are eligible to participate in the scheme.
  • Participants will undergo specialised training to become LIC agents. During this training period, they will receive a stipend of Rs. 7,000 per month in the first year, Rs. 6,000 in the second year, and Rs. 5,000 in the third year, totalling Rs. 2.16 lakh over three years.
  • After completing the training, Bima Sakhis can work as LIC agents and may qualify for development officer roles within LIC, offering further career growth opportunities.

St Xavier's University Introduces Disaster Risk Reduction Management Course

  • St. Xavier's University, Kolkata introduced a disaster risk reduction management course in collaboration with the India Japan Laboratory, Keio University.
  • The institution's vice-chancellor Felix Raj said that the research centre of the university, which is offering the course, is named after renowned scientist and Jesuit Father Eugine Lafont.
  • Keio University's India Japan Laboratory Director Dr. Rajiv Shaw said that this course will see the transfer of Japanese experience in disaster mitigation and resilience with proper knowledge, skill, technology and tools.

Art from Indonesia, Idols from Fiji: Exhibition at Diaspora Event Portrays Ramayana's Cross-border Reach

  • A life-size piñata of Ravan procured from Mexico; a Ravanhatta, the musical instrument said to be played by the mythological figure, brought from Sri Lanka; Ramayana puppets and paintings from Indonesia; and idols of Ram and Hanuman from Fiji.
  • An exhibition at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Bhubaneswar attempts to showcase the Hindu epic Ramayana to the Indian diaspora to remind them of a shared cultural legacy.
  • The exhibition — Vishwaroop Ram: The Universal Legacy of Ramayana — portrays Ram as the Maryada Purushottam or the 'ideal man' who continues to represent the essence of true heroism while idols of Lord Ram, Laxman and Sita are on display.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited the exhibition that tells the story about the influence of the Ramayana on art, culture and spirituality across the world through a diverse collection of artefacts from countries inspired by the epic's narrative, characters and events.
