World's Most Powerful Passports of 2025 Declared

  • The Henley Passport Index 2025 revealed a significant drop in India's ranking, slipping five places from 80th to 85th, in the list of the world's most powerful passports. This ranking is based on the number of destinations that can be accessed visa-free, using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
  • As of the latest standings, Indian passport holders can travel visa-free to 57 destinations, sharing the 85th rank with Equatorial Guinea and Niger. In contrast, Singapore has maintained its top spot, with its passport holders enjoying visa-free access to an impressive 195 destinations worldwide.
  • The top 10 countries are: Singapore (195 destinations), Japan (193), France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Finland, South Korea (192), Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway (191), Belgium, New Zealand, Portugal, Switzerland, United Kingdom (190), Greece, Australia (189), Canada, Poland, Malta (188), Hungary, Czechia (187), Estonia, United States (186) and Lithuania, Latvia, Slovenia, United Arab Emirates (185).

  • IDFC First Bank announced its integration with Income Tax Portal to collect Direct Tax on behalf of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Government of India. The Bank's customers can now benefit from an intuitive, hassle-free payment experience for paying their Direct Taxes, with easy access to downloadable challans, easy payments and instant payment confirmations.
  • The Bank's customers can use the user-friendly Retail and Corporate Internet Banking platforms of IDFC FIRST Bank, or pay the taxes at any IDFC FIRST Bank branch using Cash, Cheque or Demand Draft.

ISRO to Launch Communication Satellite of US-Based Firm AST SpaceMobile

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) LVM3 rocket will launch in March a communication satellite of a US-based firm AST SpaceMobile that plans to provide space-based cellular broadband network services on smartphones.
  • The commercial LVM3-M5 mission, set for March, will deploy BlueBird Block-2 satellites under a contract with the US-based AST SpaceMobile.

  • Three-time Olympic champion Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, one of the greatest all-around swimmers, announced her retirement.
  • Known as the "Iron Lady" of swimming for her gruelling repertoire of events, Hosszu competed at five Olympic Games. She was only 15 when she made her Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens Games.

Pakistan, Bangladesh Invited For an 'Undivided India'

  • India has invited Pakistan and Bangladesh, among other neighbouring countries to participate in an 'undivided India' seminar being organised to mark 150 years of the India Meteorological Department. This is a first-of-its-kind initiative by the government to keep differences aside and celebrate the shared history of the Indian subcontinent in unison.
  • Invites were sent to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Besides the subcontinent, invitations were sent to officials from the Middle East, Central and Southwest Asia too.
  • The India Meteorological Department was established on January 15, 1875. However, weather observatories had been set up much earlier. The first meteorological observatories were established by the British East India Company. The Calcutta Observatory started in 1785, the Madras Observatory in 1796 and the Bombay Observatory in 1826. Many more were set up in the early 19th century, peppered across the Indian subcontinent.

India-U.S. Collaboration on Sonobuoy Production for Indian Navy

  • India and the U.S. entered into a significant partnership for co-producing U.S. sonobuoys to enhance undersea domain awareness (UDA) for the Indian Navy. This move is part of a broader collaboration aimed at improving naval capabilities and tracking submarines in the deep seas, in response to the growing Chinese naval presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Ultra Marine (UM), a U.S.-based leader in undersea warfare technology, and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) will jointly manufacture sonobuoys, ensuring interoperability between the U.S. and Indian navies, as well as allied nations like Australia and Japan.

MDL Delivers Vaghsheer, Sixth Scorpene Class Submarine

  • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) created history with the delivery of Vaghsheer, Sixth Scorpene class Submarine of Project 75 to Indian Navy. The acceptance documents (0448) was signed by Sanjeev Singhal, CMD, MDL and RAdm R. Adhisrinivasan, CSO (Tech) in the presence of senior officials from MDL and the Indian Navy. The delivery of this submarine is a testament of MDL's professionalism, expertise and experience in constructing complex war platforms, significantly enhancing the might of the Indian navy.
  • This Submarine is indigenously built, showcasing culling edge technology and strong commitment to the Government of India's "Make in India" initiative.
  • With the delivery of Vaghsheer, MDL has completed all the contractual deliveries of P75 project and cemented its position as the only shipyard in the country with proven capability & capacity to successfully construct conventional submarine.

Eminent playback Singer P. Jayachandran Passes Away

  • Renowned playback singer P. Jayachandran, affectionately called 'Bhava Gayakan' for his soulful renditions that beautifully expressed emotions such as love, longing, and devotion died. He was 80.
  • The singer recorded over 16,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi in a career spanning over five decades.
  • He had won the national award for the best male playback singer in 1986. In 2020, he was conferred with the J C Daniel Award in recognition for his contributions to Malayalam cinema. He had also won state film awards in Kerala five times and two times in Tamil Nadu.

After Ram Temple, another Landmark for Ayodhya in Pipeline: Ram Katha Museum

  • A hologram that brings Lord Ram to life, an immersive journey into the events of the Ramayana, and a section that chronicles the 200-year-long Ram Temple movement. Days ahead of the first anniversary of Ram Mandir's inauguration, a plan has been firmed up for another landmark in Ayodhya — the Ram Katha Museum, which will be housed at the erstwhile sangrahalaya (archives) building, 4 kilometres from the temple site.
  • The museum, which will also showcase the findings from archaeological excavations to offer "concrete evidence of the temple's ancient roots", will span over 40,000 square feet and become the second-largest attraction in Ayodhya once completed.
