BharatPe to Sell 25% Stake in Unity Small Finance Bank
India's leading fintech company BharatPe is planning to sell up to 25% of its 49% stake in Unity Small Finance Bank (Unity Bank). The move is aimed at raising around $800 million (approximately Rs. 6,500 crore) and is part of the company's plan to meet RBI's regulatory requirements. BharatPe has appointed Rothschild & Co to oversee the stake sale.
EPFO's New Centralised Pension Payments System
Retirement fund body Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) completed the Centralised Pension Payments System (CPPS) rollout in all its regional offices across the country that will benefit over 68 lakh pensioners, the labour ministry said.
The CPPS is a paradigm shift from the existing pension disbursement system that is decentralised, with each zonal/regional office of EPFO maintaining separate agreements with only 3-4 banks, the ministry explained.
Under CPPS, a beneficiary will be able to withdraw pension from any bank and there will be no need for to visit the bank for verification at the time of commencement of pension, and the amount will be immediately credited upon release.

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh Inaugurates North-eastern States Meet on Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana
The Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying organised a "North-eastern Region States Meet to review the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana" at Hotel Radission, Guwahati, Assam under chairmanship of Union Minister, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAH&D) and Ministry of Panchayati Raj. This event was conducted in hybrid mode.
The Union Minister, Department of Fisheries, MoFAH&D, inaugurated and laid the foundation for key projects amounting to about Rs. 50 crore under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), underscoring the Government's commitment to advancing and targeting the self sustained fisheries sector in the North-eastern Region. Certificates were distributed to fisheries beneficiaries of Northeast Region on this occasion, including NFDP registration certificates, KCC cards, awards for the Best FFPOs and Fisheries Start-ups.

World's Oldest Person, Tomiko Itooka, Dies at 116 Years
Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person, passed away at the age of 116 in January 2025. Born in May 1908, she experienced an extraordinary life, living through major historical events, including both World Wars, technological advancements, and societal changes. Her legacy continues to inspire through her resilience and longevity.
She managed her husband's textile factory office during World War II. She lived alone in Nara after her husband's death in 1979.
Tomiko married at age 20 and had two daughters and two sons. She was survived by one son, one daughter, and five grandchildren.
She was verified as the world's oldest person in September 2024, following the passing of Maria Branyas Morera, the previous record holder. She received the official Guinness World Records (GWR) certificate in September 2024.
She was honoured during Japan's Respect for the Aged Day, a national holiday dedicated to celebrating and recognising the contributions of elderly citizens.

Telangana Farmers to Receive Rs. 12,000 per Acre Annually under Rythu Bharosa Scheme
Farmers in Telangana will receive Rs. 12,000 per acre annually under the Rythu Bharosa scheme, an increase from the current Rs. 10,000, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said. Further, families of landless farm labourers will receive a similar amount annually under the newly introduced Indiramma Atmeeya Bharosa scheme. These schemes will be implemented starting January 26.

Two New Special Categories Visas for International Students
The Ministry of Home Affairs introduced two special category visas for international students intending to pursue higher education in the country. Students using any of the two visas, the 'e-student visa' and 'e-student-x' visa will have to use the 'Study in India' (SII) portal launched by the government.
Eligible international students registered on the Study in India (SII) portal can access the e-student visa facility, while dependents of e-student visa holders are eligible for the e-student-x visa.
Centre Appoints Justice Mayank Kumar Jain as Judicial Member of SAT
The Central government notified the appointment of former Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Mayank Kumar Jain as the second judicial member of Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT).
Established under the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act, 1992 (SEBI Act), the SAT serves as an appellate authority for orders passed by SEBI. This includes decisions related to insider trading, market manipulation, violations of securities market regulations and other matters within SEBI's purview.
In addition to hearing appeals against SEBI orders, the SAT also has jurisdiction over appeals against orders passed by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).
