  • In a momentous occasion for Indian Americans, six of their leaders were sworn-in as the members of the US House of Representatives, the largest so far for this minority ethnic community in the United States.
  • The six Indian Americans are: Ami Bera, Suhash Subramanian, Ro Khanna, Thanedar, Krishnamoorthi and Jayapal.

Govt. Sets Up Working Group to Revise Wholesale Price Index Base Year From 2011-12 to 2022-23

  • The government constituted an 18-member working group, under the chairmanship of NITI Aayog Member Ramesh Chand, to revise the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) base year from 2011-12 to 2022-23.
  • The revision of the base year helps in presenting a more realistic picture of the price situation in the country.
  • As per the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the group, it will suggest the commodity basket of WPI and Producer Price Index (PPI) with the base year 2022-23 in the light of structural changes in the economy; review the existing system of price collection and suggest changes for improvement; and decide on the computational methodology to be adopted for WPI / PPI.

RBI Clears National, Cosmos Co-operative Bank Merger

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved the merger of National Co-operative Bank with Cosmos Co-operative Bank, effective from January 6, 2025.
  • The branches of The National Co-operative Bank, Bangalore (Karnataka), will function as branches of Cosmos Co-operative Bank Limited (Maharashtra).
  • National Co-operative Bank has 13 branches. In FY24, Maratha Sahakari Bank and Sahebrao Deshmukh Sahakari Bank also merged into Cosmos Bank.

IIT Madras Collaborates with Agriculture Ministry on Project VISTAAR

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to launch Project VISTAAR (Virtually Integrated System to Access Agricultural Resources). This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of India's agricultural extension system through digitalisation, providing farmers with improved access to innovative technologies and advisory services.

Hari Babu Kambhampati Takes Oath as Odisha Governor

  • Babu Kambhampati was sworn in as the 27th governor of Odisha during a function at the Raj Bhavan.
  • Orissa High Court Chief Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh administered the oath of office to Kambhampati in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik, state ministers, MLAs, MPs, BJP leaders and other dignitaries.
  • Kambhampati succeeded Raghubar Das, who resigned from the post.
  • Kambhampati is the former governor of Mizoram.

French Carrier Strike Group Makes Stopovers in Goa, Kochi as Part of Mission CLEMENCEAU 25

  • The French carrier strike group (CSG), led by the aircraft carrier FNS Charles de Gaulle, made port calls at Goa and Kochi, as part of Mission CLEMENCEAU 25.
  • Currently deployed in the Indian Ocean, the CSG is conducting joint training with regional allies, including India, ahead of its participation in multinational exercises such as La Perouse in the Indonesian zone and Pacific Steller in the Pacific Ocean.
  • During Mission CLEMENCEAU 25, the Charles de Gaulle CSG and Indian navy ships will take part in the 42nd annual Varuna bilateral exercise. The aim of this aero-naval training is to develop interoperability between our two navies, and to prepare crews to deal with a multi-milieu threat (air, surface, submarine) as part of a coalition.

Veteran Scientist R. Chidambaram, Architect of India's Nuclear Programme, Dies

  • Eminent physicist Rajagopala Chidambaram, who played a key role in the nuclear tests of 1975 and 1998, died at the age of 88.
  • Chidambaram held numerous prestigious positions throughout his career, including Principal Scientific Adviser to the government of India (2001–2018), director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (1990-1993), chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, and secretary to the government of India, DAE (1993-2000).
  • He also served as chairman of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) (1994–1995).
  • Chidambaram played a pivotal role in shaping India's nuclear capabilities.
  • He was honoured with prestigious accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.

Over the years, many distinguished poets have received the award, and Prativa Satpathy is the latest recipient. This award aims to honour poets who have made significant contributions to the literary world.
  • The Gangadhar National Award, named after Gangadhar Meher, was established in 1989 and first awarded in 1991.
  • The award has been presented annually during the university's foundation day celebrations.
