Amara Raja Infra Sets Up India's First Green Hydrogen Fueling Station in Leh

  • Amara Raja Infra, part of the $2 billion Amara Raja Group, has completed the setup of India's first green hydrogen fueling station in Leh, Ladakh, for NTPC Ltd. This innovative project will enable emission-free transport in the region, marking a significant milestone in India's efforts to embrace green mobility.
  • The station, designed to produce 80 kg of green hydrogen daily, supports NTPC's green mobility initiatives under the National Hydrogen Energy Mission. Inaugurated by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, it will also aid in the operation of five hydrogen fuel cell buses in the region. The project is poised to play a key role in the development of hydrogen infrastructure across India.

Saudi Arabia Signs $9 bn Metals Deals with Firms Including Vedanta, Zijin

  • Saudi Arabia agreed nine investment deals in metals and mining worth more than 35 billion riyals ($9.32 billion) with companies including India's Vedanta and China's Zijin Group.
  • The deals were announced during the World Investment Conference in Riyadh by the Global Supply Chain Resilience Initiative, a government programme under the Saudi government's National Investment Strategy.
  • Oil to metals conglomerate Vedanta will build copper facilities with a capital expenditure of 7.5 billion riyals at Ras Al-Khair, including a smelter and refinery with capacity of 400,000 metric tons per annum (tpa) and a 300,000 tpa copper rod plant.

Cabinet Approves 2 Hydro Projects in Arunachal Pradesh

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved two hydropower projects entailing an investment of Rs. 3,689 crore in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • An investment of Rs. 1,750 crore was approved for the construction of 186 MW Tato-I Hydro Electric Project and Rs. 1,939 crore for 240 MW Heo Hydro Electric Project in Shi Yomi District of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Power generated from the two projects will help improve the power supply position in Arunachal Pradesh and will also help in balancing the national grid.

Cabinet Approves Continuation of the Atal Innovation Mission

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the continuation of its flagship initiative, the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), under the aegis of NITI Aayog, with an enhanced scope of work and an allocated budget of Rs. 2,750 crore for the period till March 31, 2028.
  • AIM 2.0 is a step towards Viksit Bharat that aims to expand, strengthen, and deepen India's already vibrant innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
  • The approval underscores the government's commitment to fostering a robust innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in India.

  • The world's oldest living man John Alfred Tinniswood died at the age of 112.
  • The lifelong Liverpool football fan became the world's oldest living man in April 2024, when Juan Vicente Pérez Mora died at the age of 114.
  • Tinniswood, who was born on August 26, 1912, the same year the Titanic sank, became the UK's oldest man in 2020.
  • He was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's oldest man in April 2024.

Delhi Govt Launches Portal for Old-Age Pension Scheme

  • Delhi government expanded its old-age pension scheme to include an additional 80,000 senior citizens, raising the total number of beneficiaries to 5.3 lakh. AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal highlighted the government's commitment to social welfare and announced the launch of an online portal to make the application process more accessible. The new initiative aims to streamline the pension distribution process and ensure more senior citizens benefit from the scheme.
  • The government also introduced new pension amounts, depending on the age of the applicants. Senior citizens between the ages of 60-69 will receive Rs. 2,000 monthly, while those aged 70 and above will receive Rs. 2,500 per month. Additionally, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced plans to provide a monthly pension of Rs 5,000 for differently-abled individuals.

SC Upholds Inclusion of 'Socialist', 'Secular' in Constitution Preamble

  • The Supreme Court dismissed petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the 42nd amendment by which the words 'secular' and 'socialist' were added to the Preamble of the Constitution during the Emergency days in 1976, saying "these terms have achieved widespread acceptance, with their meanings understood by 'We, the people of India' without any semblance of doubt".
  • A bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar said the Parliament's power under Article 368 to amend the Constitution also extends to the Preamble and rejected the argument that the words could not have been added retrospectively in 1976 to the original Preamble which has a cut off date of November 26, 1949.
