Global Hunger and Poverty Alliance Launched by Brazil's President Lula

  • Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva officially launched the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty during the opening of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This landmark initiative, involving 148 founding members, including 82 countries and a variety of international organisations, financial institutions, and NGOs, aims to accelerate efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty globally by 2030.

First-ever WHO Investment Round Held in Brazil

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) organised its first-ever Investment Round to raise funds for its strategy for global health during the G20 Leaders' Summit in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro.
  • The event, attended by world leaders along with Prime Minister Modi, "raised $ 1.7 billion".
  • At the Summit, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to building a fair world and a sustainable planet. They pledged to prioritise the fight against inequalities in all their dimensions.
  • Their declaration reaffirmed the WHO's central role in global health governance, emphasising the need for stable and transparent financing.
  • India will work towards efforts to boost global health, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi while pledging his support to World Health Organisation chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

London Tops World's Best Cities 2025

  • London topped a definitive ranking of the World's Best Cities 2025 released in November for the tenth year in a row, followed closely by New York and Paris, even as Indian cities failed to make the cut based on the criteria of perception and performance.
  • The annual rankings produced by Resonance Consultancy in partnership with Ipsos are an analysis of large urban regions around the world that are leading in aspects most important to attracting workforce, visitors, and businesses.
  • The 2025 report marks a first in incorporating perception-based data by surveying more than 22,000 people in 31 countries for the first time - the results of which also demonstrate that people all over the world still very much aspire to live, visit, and work in the world's largest cities.

Paytm UPI Goes Global

  • Paytm launched UPI International, allowing Indian travellers to make Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions at select global locations. World Philosophy Day

Afghanistan Teen Nila Ibrahimi Wins International Children's Peace Prize

  • Seventeen -year-old girl, Nila Ibrahimi who was not allowed to speak in public in her own country won a prestigious international award for advocating for the rights of Afghan girls.
  • Nila Ibrahimi won the International Children's Peace Prize, an award that has recognised luminaries including climate activist Greta Thunberg and girls' education campaigner Malala Yousafzai.
  • Ibrahimi received the honour for her 'courageous work to fight for the rights of girls' in Afghanistan, where women are being silenced by oppressive rules set by the Taliban, who seized power in 2021.
  • The International Children's Peace Prize is awarded annually to a child who has made a significant contribution to advocating children's rights and improving the situation of vulnerable children.
  • The first Children's Peace Prize was launched in November 2005 during the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Rome, an annual meeting of Nobel Peace Prize winners and international organisations such as UNICEF and Amnesty International.

Coal India Ltd Receives Green World Award 2024 in London

  • Coal India Limited (CIL) under the aegis of the Ministry of Coal, was conferred with the esteemed Green World Environment Award in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) category along with the distinguished tile of Green World Ambassador, in London. Ministry of Coal has overall responsibility of determining policies and strategies in respect of mining of coal and other minerals in large interest of the country.
  • This prestigious international award was given to CIL for exemplary work in the field of CSR i.e Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojna for permanent curative treatment of more than 600 Thalassemia patients through stem cell transplant also known as Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT).
  • CIL, in 2017 became the first Public Sector Undertakings to take up the CSR project for curative treatment of Thalassemia through BMT operations across the country.
