Jordan Becomes First Country to Receive WHO Verification for Eliminating Leprosy

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognised Jordan as the first country globally to eliminate leprosy, marking a significant milestone in public health. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised this achievement, emphasising the collective efforts to stop transmission and reduce the stigma associated with leprosy. Saima Wazed, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, highlighted that Jordan's success is not only a victory over the disease but also against the associated psychological and socio-economic harms.
  • Jordan has not reported any indigenous cases of leprosy for over 20 years, a testament to the nation's strong political commitment and effective public health strategies. An independent verification team, commissioned by WHO, confirmed this status after a thorough assessment, validating Jordan's elimination of the disease.

India formally Joins International Big Cat Alliance

  • India formally joined the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), which it launched in 2023. After an approval from the Union Cabinet, India signed and ratified the framework.
  • Four nations, including India, Nicaragua, Eswatini and Somalia, have become the IBCA members now. In April 2023, PM Narendra Modi had launched the IBCA with an aim to secure the future of big cats and their landscapes.
  • Among the seven big cats, five — tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard and cheetah — are found in India, excluding puma and jaguar.

India among Top Overworked Nations

  • India emerged as one of the most overworked countries globally, with its workforce putting in some of the longest hours per week. According to the latest data from the International Labour Organization (ILO), the average Indian worker clocks 46.7 hours each week, placing the nation among the top countries with the longest working hours.
  • A staggering 51 per cent of India's workforce logs more than 49 hours weekly, positioning India second in the world for extended working hours. In this ranking, Bhutan leads with an overwhelming 61 per cent of its workforce surpassing the 49-hour threshold. Other South Asian countries like Bangladesh (47 per cent) and Pakistan (40 per cent) also feature prominently in the top 10, underscoring a regional trend of extended working hours.
  • The study also highlighted significant disparities in global working patterns. Vanuatu, a country in Oceania, has the lowest average working hours, with employees averaging just 24.7 hours per week. Only 4 per cent of its workforce exceeds the 49-hour mark, contrasting sharply with the work culture in South Asia.

TCS Opens Delivery Centre in Poland

  • Indian IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced the launch of its new delivery centre in Warsaw, Poland, expanding its operations in the country.
  • "With the new delivery centre, TCS expects to double its workforce to 1200-plus in a year to support its further growth in the region. Located in the heart of the city, the new delivery centre showcases TCS' capabilities across industries and technologies.
  • Poland is home to one of the largest European technology talent pools and the centre will tap into the growing Polish Information and Communication Technology (ICT) talent pool to support the needs of customers in niche technology skills and cognitive business and domain processes.

Razorpay Launches Integration Platform DataSync

  • Fintech giant Razorpay launched DataSync, a no-code data integration platform that provides real-time data access, allowing businesses to enhance business intelligence, improve financial reporting, strengthen fraud and security monitoring, and uncover new revenue opportunities.
  • The new platform is expected to significantly reduce operational costs for businesses by up to 50 per cent, while offering greater efficiency in tracking and reconciling financial data.
  • Built on Amazon Redshift and Snowflake AI Data Cloud, DataSync enables seamless integration of payment, transaction, refund, chargeback, and settlement data in real-time, eliminating the traditional manual processes of data extraction and transformation.

Indian Chess Federation Left Red-faced as Chess Olympiad's Nona Gaprindashvili Cup Goes Missing

  • In what could become a major embarrassment for India, the 'Nona Gaprindashvili Cup', which is awarded to the best performing contingent at the Chess Olympiad, is learnt to have been misplaced by the All India Chess Federation (AICF).
  • Three AICF office-bearers confirmed this. The event is held once in two years, and the Indian team had won the trophy at the last Chess Olympiad in Chennai in 2022.
  • A few weeks back, the global governing body of chess, FIDE, sent an email to the AICF requesting that India return the trophy, so that it could be handed to the winners of the ongoing Chess Olympiad in Budapest, after the end of Round 11.

Shashi Tharoor to Head Standing Committee on External Affairs, Digvijaya Singh to Chair Panel on Education

  • Days after the government and Congress wrapped up negotiations for the Parliamentary Standing Committees, the Opposition party has decided the allocations for chairs of the four committees it was allotted.
  • While Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor will head the Standing Committee on External Affairs, former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi will lead the Parliamentary panel on Agriculture. Koraput MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka will head the panel on Rural Development and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh will head the Standing Committee on Education.

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Inaugurates Second Edition of Inclusion Conclave

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the Second Edition of the Inclusion Conclave organised by National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), India in New Delhi. Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, Ms. Raksha Nikhil Khadse was also present on the occasion.
  • The Conclave aims to create a more inclusive landscape in anti-doping efforts, focusing on diversity, accessibility, and the protection of athletes' rights.
  • By fostering inclusivity, the Conclave will explore ways to better integrate all stakeholders in the global fight against doping, including athletes with disability.
  • Established under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in 2009,
  • India's National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) operates as an impartial entity.
  • The fundamental aim is to aid, prepare, and oversee anti-doping initiatives in Indian sports, guaranteeing adherence to the World Anti-Doping Code.
  • NADA India's goal is to establish drug-unfastened surroundings through the implementation of large anti-doping projects, which include instructing athletes and stakeholders, sporting out doping checks, and coping with breaches of anti-doping rules.

National Centre of Excellence for Animation

  • The Union Cabinet approved the establishment of a National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR) in Mumbai. Tentatively named the Indian Institute for Immersive Creators (IIIC), this hub is set to transform the AVGC sector and drive innovation in immersive technologies. It's modelled after the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
  • The NCoE will offer specialised training programs for both amateurs and professionals, aiming to develop Indian intellectual property that reflects the nation's cultural heritage.

  • Anurag Garg, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, was appointed as the Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). Currently serving as Additional DG in the Border Security Force (BSF), Garg's tenure as NCB DG will last until May 23, 2026, or until further orders.

World Alzheimer's Day

  • World Alzheimer's Day is observed annually on September 21 to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease and dementia, promote understanding, and combat the stigma surrounding these conditions. It serves as a day of global awareness and education, encouraging people to learn more about the challenges faced by individuals living with Alzheimer's, their families, and caregivers.
  • World Alzheimer's Day was first launched in 1994 by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) to mark the 10th anniversary of the organisation. The day was created in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to shed light on the growing impact of the disease and the importance of early diagnosis and support for those affected.
  • The theme for World Alzheimer's Day 2024 is 'Time to act on dementia, Time to act on Alzheimer's'.

International Day of Peace

  • The International Day of Peace is observed annually on September 21 to promote peace and celebrate the power of global solidarity for a peaceful and sustainable world. Also known as World Peace Day, it encourages people of all races and ethnicities to propagate the importance of world peace.
  • The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. In 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to devote a day to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace. The UN initially designated the third Tuesday in September 1981 to celebrate World Peace Day. Later in 2002, the date was then shifted and fixed to September 21.
  • Every year, a new theme is announced to celebrate the International Day of Peace. This year (2024), the theme mentioned by the United Nations is 'Cultivating a Culture of Peace'.

World Rivers Day

  • World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world's waterways. It highlights the many values of our rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages the improved stewardship of all rivers around the world. Rivers in virtually every country face an array of threats, and only through our active involvement can we ensure their health in the years ahead.
  • In 2005, the United Nations launched the Water for Life Decade to help create a greater awareness of the need to better care for our water resources. Following this, the establishment of World Rivers Day was in response to a proposal initiated by internationally renowned river advocate, Mark Angelo.
  • The proposal for a global event to celebrate rivers was based on the success of BC Rivers Day, which Mark Angelo had founded and led in western Canada since 1980. A World Rivers Day event was seen by agencies of the UN as a good fit for the aims of the Water for Life Decade and the proposal was approved. It is annually celebrated on the fourth Sunday of every September.

Govt Notifies October 1 as Start Date for Vivad Se Vishwas 2.0 Scheme

  • The government has notified October 1 as the starting date for direct tax dispute resolution scheme Vivad Se Vishwas 2.0.
  • Vivad Se Vishwas scheme 2.0 was originally announced in Budget 2024-25 presented in July for resolution of certain income tax disputes pending appeal.
  • The scheme can be availed by taxpayers who have disputes/appeals, including writs and special leave petitions (appeals) whether filed by the taxpayer or the tax authorities are pending as on July 22, 2024 before the Supreme Court, High Courts, Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, Commissioner/Joint Commissioner (Appeals).

Uttarakhand Enacts Landmark Property Damage Recovery Act

  • In a significant development for the state of Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his profound gratitude to the Governor for approving the Uttarakhand Public (Government) and Private Property Damage Recovery (Ordinance) Act 2024. This groundbreaking legislation represents a crucial step towards addressing the financial implications of civil unrest and riots in the state.
  • The newly enacted law introduces a comprehensive framework for claiming compensation for damages caused by rioters. Notably, it extends protection to both government and private property, marking a significant expansion in the scope of recoverable damages. This inclusive approach ensures that all affected parties, whether public institutions or private citizens, have recourse to seek reimbursement for losses incurred during periods of civil unrest.
  • With the implementation of this Act, Uttarakhand became the third state in India, following Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, to enact such comprehensive property protection legislation. This places Uttarakhand at the forefront of states taking proactive measures to safeguard public and private assets during civil disturbances.

Odisha Government to Set Up Medical Colleges in All Districts

  • Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reiterated his government's dedication to opening a medical college in each of the state's 30 districts. Speaking at the annual conference of the Odisha Medical Service Association (OMSA) in Balasore, Majhi emphasised the priority of filling vacant doctor positions across the state.
  • The chief minister also urged the medical community to work with dedication and maintain the public's trust in the healthcare system.

Poem on National War Memorial, Veer Abdul Hameed Chapter Added to Class 6 NCERT

  • Developed in alignment with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020 and National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, a poem titled 'National War Memorial' and a chapter titled 'Veer Abdul Hameed - were included in the NCERT curriculum of Class 6 from this year (2024). This initiative, jointly undertaken by the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education, is to teach the values of patriotism, devotion to duty and courage & sacrifice among school children and youth participation in nation-building.
  • The poem "National War Memorial' is to appreciate the spirit behind it. The chapter titled 'Veer Abdul Hameed' honours the Braveheart CQMH Abdul Hameed who made a supreme sacrifice fighting for the country during the India-Pakistan war of 1965 and was awarded the country's highest gallantry award, the Param Veer Chakra (posthumously).

IIT Hyderabad Establishes ANR Award for Acting and Performing Arts

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad announced the establishment of the ANR Award for Acting and Performing Arts. This award has been instituted by the Akkineni family through Akkineni International Foundation to honour the legacy of the legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR).
  • This prestigious award aims to recognise and support exceptional talent in the field of acting and performing arts, fostering creativity and innovation among aspiring artists.
  • Akkineni Nageswara Rao, popularly known as ANR, was an Indian actor and film producer, primarily known for his works in Telugu cinema. Born in present-day Andhra Pradesh, he worked in the film industry from 1941 till 2014, and was awarded Padma Shri in 1968, Padma Bhushan in 1988, Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1990, and Padma Vibhushan in 2011.
