BRICS Bank to Expand Membership as Saudi Arabia Looks to Join

  • The New Development Bank, the lender created by the BRICS group of nations, will widen its membership as it seeks to boost its capital and counter the influence of Western-dominated multilateral banks.
  • The lender, formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, will look at increasing the diversity of its members in terms of geography, development stages and on the size of the countries.
  • Saudi Arabia is the latest to discuss joining the bank, a move that would give the lender more financial muscle. The bank was created in 2014 as a counterweight to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
  • The bank's membership is open to any country within the United Nations. Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates became members in 2021, while Egypt joined in February 2022.

Dubai Sets Goals for Zero-Emissions Public Transportation by 2050

  • Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) unveiled a groundbreaking strategy, aiming to achieve zero-emissions public transportation by 2050. As the first Middle Eastern agency to develop such a comprehensive long-term plan, the RTA aims to contribute to climate change mitigation and minimize its carbon footprint across three critical areas: public transportation, buildings and facilities, and waste management.
  • This strategic move aligns with the United Arab Emirates' preparations for COP28 and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, showcasing the region's commitment to environmental sustainability. By transitioning to tangible achievements, the RTA seeks to solidify Dubai's position as one of the world's top urban economies, in line with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33's objectives.

RBI Penalises Central Bank of India

  • The RBI imposed a penalty of Rs. 84.50 lakh on Central Bank of India for non-compliance with certain provisions of norms related to frauds classification and reporting.
  • The Reserve Bank had conducted statutory inspection for supervisory evaluation of the bank with reference to its financial position as on March 31, 2021.
  • Examination of the reports revealed that the public sector lender had failed to report as fraud to RBI certain accounts within seven days of decision of Joint Lenders' Forum (JLF) to declare the accounts as fraud.

ADB Launches India Strategy for 2023-27; Focus on Employment Creation, Green Growth

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) rolled out its 2023-27 country partnership strategy for India that identifies accelerating structural transformation and job creation, promoting climate-resilient growth, and deepening social and economic inclusiveness as key focus areas.
  • India currently ranks amongst the fastest-growing major global economies after it rebounded quickly from the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. The nation needs to accelerate and sustain inclusive growth by tackling certain crucial challenges in infrastructure and human development, income and regional disparities, and vulnerability to climate change and natural hazards.

Indian Scientists Discover New Exoplanet with Mass 13 Times that of Jupiter

  • A new Jupiter-size exoplanet with the highest density known till this date (as in May 2023) and mass 13 times than that of Jupiter, was discovered by an international team of scientists led by Prof. Abhijit Chakraborty at the Exoplanet Research Group of the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad.
  • The newly discovered exoplanet is found around the star called TOI4603 or HD 245134. NASA's The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) initially declared TOI4603 as a possible candidate to host a secondary body of unknown nature.
  • The newly discovered exoplanet TOI 4603b is one of the most massive and densest giant planets that orbits very close to its host star at a distance less than 1/10th the distance between our Sun and Earth.

North Korean 1st Spy Satellite Plunges into Sea

  • North Korea's attempt to put the country's first spy satellite into orbit failed, an apparent embarrassment to leader Kim Jong Un over his push to boost his military capability in the protracted security tensions with the United States and South Korea.
  • As per reports, the rocket carrying the satellite crashed into waters off the Korean Peninsula's western coast after it lost thrust following the separation of its first and second stages.
  • The rocket was launched from the northwestern Tongchang-ri area, where North Korea's main space launch centre is located.
  • The United States strongly condemned North Korea for the launch, which used ballistic missile technology in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

UP Hockey Wins 13th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship 2023

  • Uttar Pradesh Hockey won the 13th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship 2023 after defeating Hockey Association of Odisha 7-1 in the final at the iconic Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium Rourkela, Odisha. Meanwhile, Hockey Haryana beat Hockey Madhya Pradesh to finish third in the competition.
  • Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Hockey reached the Final by defeating Hockey Haryana 7-0 while Hockey Association of Odisha defeated Hockey Madhya Pradesh 3-1 in the semi-finals.

India Clinches Title of CAVA Women's Challenge Cup 2023

  • India won the title of NSC-CAVA Women's Volleyball Challenge Cup held in Kathmandu. India won the title by defeating Kazakhstan in the final at the National Sports Council's Covered Hall in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu.
  • India defeated Kazakhstan in a shared set of 3-0. India won the first set 25-15, the second set 25-22, and the third set 25-18. Along with this, India finished the competition by remaining undefeated.
  • The event was organised by the Nepal Volleyball Association and was supported by the NSC, eight nations participated in it. In the competition, Kazakhstan became the runner-up, Nepal third, Uzbekistan fourth, Sri Lanka fifth, Kyrgyzstan sixth, Maldives seventh, and Bangladesh eighth.

Northeast Gets its First Vande Bharat Train

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off northeast region's first Vande Bharat Express virtually. The train connects Guwahati in Assam with New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and the journey takes five-and-a-half hours. Earlier, the fastest train on the route took six-and-a half hours to cover the distance of nearly 400 km.
  • Mr. Modi also dedicated 182 route km of newly electrified sections to the nation. Now, 425 km of railway tracks in Assam and Meghalaya have been electrified.

Naveen Patnaik Launches 'Odisha for AI, and AI for Youth' Initiative

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled two groundbreaking initiatives aimed at leveraging the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the state. The initiatives, named 'Odisha for Artificial Intelligence' and 'Artificial Intelligence for Youth', are poised to make a significant impact on digital literacy, technological advancements, and economic growth.
  • The initial phase of the initiatives will focus on the cities of Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Cuttack. These cities will serve as the testing grounds for the comprehensive integration of AI solutions in various sectors. By launching these initiatives, the Odisha government aims to revolutionize the state's technological landscape and create a model for other regions to follow.
  • One of the primary goals of the initiatives is to enhance digital literacy among the masses and familiarize them with cutting-edge technologies. By augmenting the digital skills of individuals, the initiatives aim to bridge the technological divide and empower citizens to thrive in an increasingly digital world. The State Electronics and IT Department, in collaboration with Intel India, has been instrumental in driving these efforts.
  • The 'Odisha for AI' course will be offered by Intel on its app/site. This free 4-hour course aims to educate residents of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri about the fundamentals of AI.
  • The 'AI for Youth' initiative specifically targets students below 18 years from 2000 5T schools of phase 1 and Odisha Adarsh Vidyalayas. This program aims to provide young minds with the opportunity to explore the world of AI and develop their skills in this transformative field.

Kerala Launches Project to Make Capital Largest Solar city in India

  • The Kerala government launched an ambitious project to turn every rooftop in Thiruvananthapuram into a solar energy-producing station.
  • Through this project, the state capital is expected to become one of the largest 'solar cities' in the country.
  • The solar city project aims to meet all power requirements of a city from renewable energy sources. The government in Thiruvananthapuram identified the potential for the production of 800 MW solar energy and three lakh buildings suitable for installation through the creation of a solar atlas.
  • Solar panel installations have already started in 600 government buildings, out of which 150 were commimisioned. The remaining buildings would be commisioned within two months.

Navy Chief Presents Medals at Naval Investiture Ceremony in Visakhapatnam

  • Admiral R. Hari Kumar, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), confered Gallantry and Distinguished Service awards, on behalf of the President of India, to the recipients, at the Naval Investiture Ceremony held at the Naval Base, Visakhapatnam.
  • A total of 33 awards were presented during the ceremony, including two Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry), 13 Nao Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty), 16 Visisht Seva Medals, and two Jeevan Raksha Padaks.
  • The CNS also gave away the Lt V K Jain Memorial Gold Medal for pioneering research in the field of weapon improvement and Electrical Engineering, and the Capt Ravi Dhir Memorial Gold Medal for promoting Flight Safety.

Maharashtra Govt's New Financial Scheme for Farmers

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led government introduced a new financial scheme under which over ten million state farmers will be paid Rs. 6,000 annually.
  • The scheme, Namo Shetkari Mahasanman Yojana, was approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Eknath Shinde. The CM said that the amount was in addition to Rs. 6,000 paid to farmers in instalments per year by the Centre under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.
  • The scheme was announced by Fadnavis when he presented the state Budget for 2023-2024 in March.

British Council and Microsoft Partner to Boost Job Prospects for Young Indians

  • The British Council, the UK's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural exchange and Microsoft India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a co-developed three-year partnership programme, 'English Skills for Youth'.
  • The programme aims to enhance the life opportunities of young people, aged 18-25, particularly women, in socio-economically marginalised communities across India.
  • The primary objective of the 'English Skills for Youth' project is to enhance employability opportunities for the youth. Microsoft and the British Council have co-developed this programme to impart one of the most in-demand skills – English language– to students.

IIM Lucknow, Emeritus Launch New 'Executive Programme in Data-Driven Product Management'

  • Effective product management is one of the key drivers of a business, and data holds the potential to turbo-charge this to the next level. In order to prepare the next generation of product management professionals, the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM Lucknow) along with Emeritus, launched their first-of-its-kind Executive Programme in Data-Driven Product Management. The programme is India's only executive education programme to link product management with data analytics and design thinking.
  • The 8-month programme is aimed at empowering professionals with about 5-10 years of work experience to transition into data-driven product management.

  • The World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI)-2023 acknowledged Lovely Professional University (LPU) ahead of the world's top Harvard & Oxford universities, in one of its global ranking lists. Evaluating participating universities globe in six categories; LPU was ranked 12th; the Ivy League University Harvard 23rd; and, Oxford of the UK 37th in the 'Fourth Industrial Revolution' category.
  • Securing a global band of 101-200, LPU is counted explicitly among various top Ivy League universities in the US, including Harvard, Cornell, Pennsylvania; UK; Germany; Canada; Australia; China; Korea; Sweden.

New Liberation War Gallery Inaugurated at the Indian Cultural Centre in Dhaka

  • High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Pranay Verma joined the Home Minister in the inauguration of the Liberation War Gallery, which contains some rare photographs of the 1971 Liberation War which culminated in the liberation of then East Pakistan and its emergence as the newest nation of the South Asian region.
  • A number of liberation war fighters, Bir Muktijoddhas, and distinguished guests, including a number of eminent personalities of Bangladesh, representatives from cultural and academic spheres of Bangladesh, media persons and youth took part in the inaugural programme.
  • The Gallery showcases the heroic photographs and documents from the 1971 War of Liberation of Bangladesh as a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship between India and Bangladesh. It pays tribute to the valiant freedom fighters who fought against oppression and tyranny. The gallery honours the memory of the unnamed millions who laid down their lives during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. It takes the visitors on an inspiring journey through the history of that period which serves as a symbol of valour, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of the people of Bangladesh.

Goa Raj Bhavan Launches First Books under Governor's Scheme

  • Five books published under the Goa Raj Bhavan's book sponsoring scheme 'Nayi Pahal' were released.
  • The books in Konkani, Marathi and English were unveiled in the presence of Jnanpith Award winner Goan writer Damodar Mauzo.
  • The books are by authors Sanjay Ramesh Salelkar (Konkani), Pallavi Polekar (Marathi), Advocate Manohar Adpaikar (Marathi) and two books by Pachu Menon in English.
  • The Raj Bhavan had in February declared an innovative scheme for new writers, under which it would sponsor the cost of printing and publishing their books in Konkani, Marathi, Hindi and Sanskrit, and later English was also included in the scheme.
  • The Raj Bhavan may not be involved in the sale process of a book, but it will help new writers to come up and prove their creative talent in literature.

Delhi High Court Quashes BCI's Decision Refusing Enrolment to South Korean Citizen

  • The Delhi High Court quashed the Bar Council of India's decision refusing to consider a South Korean citizen as eligible for enrolment as an advocate with Bar Council of Delhi. The foreign national had moved to India with his parents at the age of 11 and lived here continuously till he graduated from NALSAR University in 2016.
  • The court ruled that as long as the right of the citizens of India who hold the requisite qualification to practice law in a foreign nation is preserved and no discriminatory measures are adopted in the foreign nation, the nationals of that country would clearly be entitled to seek enrolment in terms of the proviso to Section 24(1)(a) of the Advocates Act.
  • The petitioner Daeyoung Jung in the petition said that that he wishes to practice the profession of law in India so as to utilise his degree effectively. "The petitioner's law degree is his only qualification which, in the absence of an enrolment certificate by the respondents, cannot be utilized by the petitioner either in India or abroad to practice and build a career as a lawyer," Jung told the court.
