UNHRC Adopts Resolution against Sri Lanka's Rights Record; India Abstains from Voting
India abstained on a draft resolution in the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka which was adopted.
While abstaining, India stressed that it will work with Sri Lanka and the international community to attain the related objectives of legitimate aspirations of Tamils of Sri Lanka and prosperity for all Sri Lankans.
The draft resolution on 'Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka' was adopted at the 51st Session of Human Rights Council in Geneva, with 20 nations voting in favour in the 47-member Council, seven against, including China and Pakistan, and 20 abstentions, including by India, Japan, Nepal and Qatar.
The 20 countries that voted in favour of the resolution included the United Kingdom, the United States, Argentina, Finland, France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Paraguay, Poland, Republic of Korea and Ukraine.
FinMin Allows Airlines to Avail up to Rs. 1,500 crore Loan under ECLGS
The Union Finance Ministry allowed airlines to avail of up to Rs. 1,500 crore loan under the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS), to help them tide over their cash flow problems.
Earlier, an airline could avail of a loan of not more than Rs 400 crore under the ECLGS. The Centre had in 2020 started the ECLGS to provide collateral-free and government-guaranteed loans to businesses affected by the Covid pandemic.
The Finance Ministry's decision is likely to benefit financially-beleaguered airlines, such as SpiceJet, which have been looking for the Centre's assistance to run their operations. Last month, the airline took a loan of approximately Rs. 225 crore under ECLGS.
RBI Approves Prashant Kumar's Appointment as Yes Bank MD and CEO
The Reserve Bank of India approved the appointment of Prashant Kumar as MD and CEO of Yes Bank for three years.
Earlier in July this year, the alternate Board of the private sector lender had recommended to the Reserve Bank of India for its approval, the appointment of Kumar as Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer (MD &CEO) of the Bank for a period of three years.
Prior to joining Yes Bank, Kumar was Deputy Managing Director & CFO of India's largest bank SBI, where he served in various capacities.
Hero's Vida Electric Scooter India Launch
Hero MotoCorp, India's largest two-wheeler manufacturer, ventured into the electric mobility space. The company launched its first-ever electric scooter in India under its new EV subsidiary – Vida. The company's maiden e-scooters might be called the Vida V1 and it is likely to be sold in two variants: V1 Plus and V1 Pro.
Hero MotoCorp launched the Vida electric scooter at the Hero Global Centre of Innovation and Technology (CIT) in Jaipur, Rajasthan. It is worth mentioning that the company's Vida sub-brand for electric mobility was introduced in March this year. The Indian two-wheeler major calls it a brand new identity for its emerging mobility solutions.
Alphabet Inc's Google to Build its First Cloud Region in Greece
Alphabet Inc's Google will set up its first cloud region in Greece, giving a boost to the country's efforts to become a world cloud computing hub.
The deal is estimated to contribute some 2.2 billion euros ($2.13 billion) to Greece's economic output and create some 20,000 jobs by 2030.
Since taking office in 2019, Mitsotakis's conservative government has stepped up moves to diversify the economy and attract foreign investment and high tech companies to the country which emerged from a decade-long financial crisis in 2018.

Sajan Prakash Wins Gold in National Games 200 Metre Butterfly Swimming
Sajan Prakash overcame an abdominal strain to win the gold medal in the men's 200m butterfly with a new meet record at the National Games 2022 in Gujarat.
Olympian Sajan Prakash, representing Kerala, clocked 1:59.56 in the final to win the gold, beating his own National Games record set at the previous edition in Kerala.
This was Sajan Prakash's second gold medal at the National Games 2022 after the men's 100m butterfly.

The SASTRA Ramanujan Prize for 2022 Will be Awarded to Yunqing Tang
The SASTRA Ramanujan Prize for 2022 will be awarded to Yunqing Tang Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. The Award was instituted by the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) in 2005. The award includes a cash prize of $10,000 and it is presented annually to individuals aged 32 and below, who made an outstanding contribution to the field of mathematics.
Ms. Yunqing Tang's works displayed a remarkable combination of sophisticated techniques in which the arithmetic and geometry of modular curves and Shimura varieties play a central role.
Tang's recent woke in collaboration with Frank Calegari and Vesselin Dimitrov on the modular equation is of great significance.
Ms. Yunqing Tang was born in China and she completed her B.Sc at Peking University in 2011, following which she went to Harvard University for higher education. In 2016, she completed her Ph.D. under the supervision of Mark Kisin.
Two Indian Students Win Prestigious Victorian Premier's Award in Australia
Two female Indian students in Australia - Divyangana Sharma and Ritika Saxena - won the prestigious Victorian Premier's award.
These awards are an initiative of the Victorian government to celebrate outstanding international students in Victoria.
Divyangana Sharma has won the coveted Victorian Premier's Award - International Student of the Year 2021-22, while, Ritika Saxena won the International Student of the Year award in the Research category.
First Green Tech Based Incubation Centre of India to Come up at NIT Srinagar
India's first technology business incubation centre based on green technology named "Greenovator Incubation Foundation" is coming up at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar.
Technology Business Incubation or Inclusive TBI (i-TBI) is a three-year initiative supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) for educational institutions, idea-generators, innovators and entrepreneurs to support the innovative ideas, start-up initiatives and promote self-employment and job creation through incubation.
The Department of science and technology is responsible for providing all the necessary funds for setting up the centre. The co-working space would be provided to start-ups for incubation facility, prototyping laboratory, meeting rooms, recreational facilities etc. Apart from office space, financial assistance as seed money would be given on a case-to-case basis with equity, as per the DST guidelines.
UGC Launches Syllabus of Cyber Security Courses at UG, PG Levels
The University Grants Commission (UGC) launched the syllabus of cyber security courses at the Under Graduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) levels. The syllabus aims at developing an understanding of cyber security issues even for students from non-technical streams.
Launching the syllabus, Universities Grants Commission (UGC) Chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar said that cyber security as a subject needs to be incorporated at graduation and postgraduation level in all streams. The syllabus of these courses aims to create aware, responsive, and responsible digital citizens, thereby contributing effectively to an overall healthy cyber security posture and ecosystem.

As part of the procedure, the Law Minister writes to the CJI to name his or her successor.
Justice Lalit retires as the CJI on November 8.
Justice D.Y. Chandrachud is the senior-most judge after the CJI.
As per practice, the CJI names the senior-most judge as his or her successor.
Going by the established practice and convention, Justice Chandrachud would be the 50th CJI.
Manipur High Court Closes PIL Highlighting Difficulties Faced by Myanmar People
The Manipur High Court closed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed highlighting the difficulties being faced by people from Myanmar who were taking shelter in the state of Manipur.
The Petition filed by the practicing Advocates of the High Court further sought directions to the State authorities to provide them adequate food, shelter, health-care and other basic necessities.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice M.V. Muralidaran was informed that the Government of India was considering enactment of a comprehensive law relating to refugees but pending such enactment, a Standard Operating Procedure was floated on 29.12.2011 to deal with foreign nationals who were claiming the status of refugees. This Standard Operating Procedure was revised on 20.03.2019. In terms thereof, such foreign nationals are to be housed in designated camps or shelters, pending consideration of their claims for long term visas.
Centre Appoints Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma as Presiding Officer of UAPA Tribunal
The Centre appointed Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma of the Delhi High Court as the Presiding Officer of the Tribunal for the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), related to the ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI) and its associates.
Once an organisation is banned under the provisions of UAPA, a tribunal is set up by the government to adjudicate whether there are sufficient grounds for the decision.
Justice Sharma was appointed as a judge of the Delhi High Court on 28th February, 2022, after being elevated from the Delhi Higher Judicial Service.
