India's Lt Gen Subramanian Takes Command of United Nation's Largest Peacekeeping Operation

  • Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian of India took over the command of the UN`s peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, the largest of its 13 operations. "It is a privilege to have the opportunity to serve for sustainable peace in the world's youngest country, South Sudan, by leading diverse military peacekeepers in the world's largest peacekeeping mission," he said.
  • The operation, known as UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has 13,254 troops among its 17,982 personnel, of whom, 2,385 troops and 30 police personnel are from India. He was given a guard of honour by troops from India, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Rwanda and Ethiopia as he succeeded another Indian, Lt Gen. Shailesh Tinaikar.
  • He took charge of Major Gen. Main Ullah Chowdhury of Bangladesh, who was the interim commander. This is Subramanian`s second tour with the UN, having served in Sierra Leone as a staff officer with the mission in 2000.

Islamabad's 24th Attempt to Give Provincial Status to PoK Fails

  • Amid stiff opposition from the people, the Pakistan government withdrew the 15th Constitutional Amendment Bill to the Interim Constitution of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), thus failing in its 24th attempt to provide provincial status to PoK.
  • The introduction of the Bill led to massive protests and public meetings in all the ten districts of Pakistan-occupied region Protestors strongly objected to the Pakistan government's plan to bring in the 15th amendment to fix the constitutional status of the region.

Harsh Shah Steps down as CEO of Azure Power

  • Harsh Shah has stepped down from the position of CEO of New York Stock Exchange-listed renewable energy company Azure Power, in just two months of taking up the role. The company has now appointed Rupesh Agarwal as the acting CEO. Agarwal had joined Azure in the capacity of Chief Strategy & Commercial Officer.
  • Shah was earlier CEO of IndiGrid, India's first power transmission InvIT. In an exchange notification, IndiGrid said it has reinstated Shah as the CEO.
  • Azure was founded by Inderpreet Wadhwa in 2008 and was listed at NYSE in 2016.

Tata Steel Inks MoU with Punjab Govt. to Set up Steel Plant in Ludhiana

  • Tata Steels signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Punjab for setting up a 0.75 million tonne per annum (MnTPA) long products steel plant with a scrap-based electric arc furnace (EAF).
  • This initiative to set up the greenfield facility at Kadiana Khurd, Hitech Valley, Ludhiana in Punjab is a part of Tata Steel's commitment to investing in a circular economy and transitioning to low-carbon steelmaking through the steel recycling route. It is a step aligned to the Company's goal of achieving Net Zero carbon emission by 2045.
  • The state-of-the art EAF-based steel plant would produce construction grade steel rebar under the company's flagship retail brand 'Tata Tiscon', which would enable Tata Steel to further augment its market presence in the construction segment.

Beijing Tops, Bengaluru 2nd in Asia-Pacific in Tech Hubs

  • Bengaluru ranked second in the Asia Pacific region in the top tech hubs list and is only behind China's Beijing, according to a report by Cushman and Wakefield. The report, called 'Tech Cities: The Global Intersection of Talent and Real Estate', studied as many as 115 different 'tech cities' across the globe. After Beijing and Bengaluru, the list has three other Indian cities, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad. Mumbai and Pune also made it to the top-10 list with eighth and ninth position in a list of 14 cities from the APAC.
  • The study considered factors such as talent, real estate and business environment to assess and evaluate the cities.

FIFA Lifts Ban on All India Football Federation (AIFF)

  • World football governing body FIFA lifted the ban imposed on the AIFF after the Supreme Court terminated the mandate of the Committee of Administrators (CoA), clearing the decks for India to host the Women's U-17 World Cup in October.
  • The suspension, the first time in AIFF's 85-year history, lasted just 11 days after the Supreme Court on Monday dissolved the three-member CoA, constituted by it in May, while modifying its earlier orders to ensure that India hosts the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup from October 11-30.
  • FIFA said it and the AFC will continue to monitor the situation and will support the AIFF in conducting its elections in a timely manner.
  • AIFF acting general secretary Sunando Dhar welcomed the move and thanked FIFA, AFC and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur for their roles in lifting the ban.

PM Narendra Modi Dedicates India's First Earthquake Memorial

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated India's first earthquake memorial, named Smruti Van at Bhuj in Gujarat. Smruti Van is a unique memorial carrying the names of more than 12 thousand people who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake that struck in January 2001. The earthquake simulator will provide real like the experience of earthquake tremors to visitors. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and State BJP President C. R. Patil were present on the occasion.
  • The grand structure, which is the first such memorial in the country according to a Gujarat government official, is spread over 470 acres on Bhujio Hill near Bhuj town. It celebrates the spirit of resilience in the wake of the death of nearly 13,000 people during the earthquake on January 26, 2001, which had its epicentre in Bhuj.
  • The museum showcases Gujarat's topography, rebuilding initiatives and success stories after the 2001 earthquake, and informs about different kinds of disasters and future readiness for any type of disaster. It also has a block to relive the experience of an earthquake with the help of a 5D simulator and another block for people to pay homage to the lost souls.

Nagaland Gets its 2nd Railway Station in 119 Years

  • Nagaland got its second railway station after a gap of more than 119 years. The Donyi Polo Express from Shokhuvi Railway Station was flagged off by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.
  • The Donyi Polo Express ran daily between Guwahati in Assam and Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh. The train service has now been extended till Shokhuvi, a few kilometres from Dimapur. Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh will be directly connected by train service with the extension of Donyi Polo Express till Shokhuvi Railway Station.

Subsidised Fertiliser under 'Bharat' Brand from October

  • All subsidised fertilisers, including Urea and DAP (Diammonium phosphate), will be sold from October under a single brand name "Bharat" as part of the Centre's 'One Nation, One Fertiliser' initiative, Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.
  • The initiative is aimed at ensuring timely supply of fertiliser to farmers, bringing uniformity in supply, and reducing subsidy burden in terms of higher freight charges.
  • As of now, there is a crisscross movement of fertiliser due to brand preference in different parts of the country, he said.
  • The One Nation, One Fertiliser initiative is part of the Centre's fertiliser subsidy scheme Pradhanmantri Bhartiya Janurvarak Pariyojna (PMBJP). As part of this, the government also plans to set up Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samridhi Kendra (PMKSK), which will serve as a one-stop centre for farmers to access services such as soil health tests.

Coast Guard Holds 10th Edition of Search, Rescue Exercise off Chennai Coast

  • The Coast Guard held a national maritime search and rescue exercise off Chennai coast. The exercise is the 10th edition of the Coast Guard that is being organised by the National Maritime Search and Rescue Board. A total of 24 observers from 16 foreign nations took part in the exercise in the Bay of Bengal. The theme of the 10th edition was 'Capacity Building Towards Marine Passenger Safety'.
  • The two-day exercise, which was be conducted under the aegis of the National Maritime Search and Rescue Board (NMSARB), is hosted by the Indian Coast Guard as the nodal maritime SAR coordinating agency for the Indian Search and Rescue Region (ISRR). In addition to 51 participants from national maritime SAR stakeholders, the exercise will be attended by 24 foreign observers from 16 friendly foreign countries.

Economist and Former Planning Commission Member Abhijit Sen Passes Away

  • Economist Abhijit Sen, a former Planning Commission member and one of the country's foremost experts on rural economy, passed away. He was 72.
  • In a career spanning more than four decades, Abhijit Sen taught economics at New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, and held several important government positions including the chair of the Commission of Agricultural Cost and Prices.
  • He was a member of Planning Commission from 2004 to 2014, when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister.

National Small Industry Day

  • The country observes the National Small Industry Day every year on August 30 to recognise the importance and contribution of the small-scale businesses in India. The small-scale sector plays a key role and is a major growth indicator in the Indian economy. The National Small Industry Day is celebrated across the country to encourage the development and growth of the sector that contributes as much as 40 per cent to the gross industrial value of the country's economy.
  • The advent of the National Small Industry Day can be traced back to August 2000 when the government formulated a comprehensive policy package for small-scale industries (SSI) in India. On August 30, it was decided by the Ministry of Small-Scale Industries that the very day would be observed as SSI Day.

International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances

  • International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is marked every year on August 30 to honour and pay tribute to people who have faced enforced disappearances. Global organisations UN and Amnesty International observe this day to raise awareness about how enforced disappearance is a crime and should not be used as a tool to deal with situations of conflict. According to the UN, more than 6,000 people were registered as missing in Kosovo since 1999. Hence, the resource centre for missing persons in Kosovo has also been initiated by the UN.
  • On December 21, 2010, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed August 30 as the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

Vidyanidhi Scheme Extended for Kids of Agricultural Labourers: CM Bommai

  • Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the State Cabinet decided to extend the 'Vidyanidhi' Scheme to the children of farm labourers along with farmers' children.
  • Speaking after inaugurating a slew of developmental workers and laying foundation stones for new projects in Ranebennur Assembly Constituency, he said that 4,000 Anganwadi centres were established specially to provide nutritious food for the kids of agricultural labourers. Besides, Rs. 50,000 scheme has been formulated for the rural artisans.

UGC to Launch 'e-Samadhan' Portal to Address Student Grievances

  • A new student grievance redressal platform, "e-Samadhan", is being launched by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The platform, which will be operational next week, will address all the students' problems online.
  • UGC has also set definite timelines for addressing the grievances. For student-related matters, the deadline has been fixed at ten working days. For teaching and non-teaching issues, the issue needs to be addressed within 15 days. For any matter related to the university or college, a maximum time limit of 20 days is allowed.
  • Nearly 38 million students are expected to be benefitted from the e-Samadhan portal.

Centre Identifies 75 Tribal Districts for Focused TB Interventions

  • After having run an active case-finding campaign to detect instances of Tuberculosis (TB) among tribal populations over the past six months, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Central TB Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare zeroed in on 75 tribal districts, where focused interventions would be run over the next few months with the aim to make them TB-free.
  • The campaign to detect TB cases across 174 tribal districts started this January (2022) under the Aashwasan Campaign, under which door-to-door screening was done in over 68,000 villages. Official data showed that 3,82,811 people were identified for presumptive TB after a verbal screening of over 1.03 crore people in these villages.

Vedic Planetarium, World's Largest Temple

  • Bigger than the Taj Mahal and St Paul's Cathedral in Vatican, an under-construction temple in West Bengal's Mayapur will be the largest religious monument in the world. Set to be inaugurated in 2024 after a two-year delay caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Temple of Vedic Planetarium in Nadia district will reportedly replace Cambodia's 12th century-built Angkor Wat temple complex, spread over 400 acres of land, as the world's largest religious structure.
  • A project of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), the Mayapur temple being built along the Ganga River aims to make the age-old Vedic culture and traditions accessible to all.

UP Govt. to Develop Kannauj into Tourist Destination

  • Kannuj will be developed into a tourist destination as per the decision taken by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. This decision was taken in order to emphasize the importance of perfume industries in India. The government of Uttar Pradesh also decided to organize an international perfume fair in Kannuaj in December. The first phase of the perfume park will be completed by 15th November 2022, which is being set up in the district. The aim of this initiative is to take the Rs. 250 crore perfume business to height of Rs. 25,000 crore. This project will give momentum to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's vision of making Uttar Pradesh a $1 trillion economy.

New System for Listing Urgent Matters: CJI UU Lalit

  • With Justice UU Lalit taking over as the new Chief Justice of India, winds of change are blowing in the Supreme Court.
  • On his first working day as the CJI, Justice Lalit announced that a new procedure for listing of urgent matters would be put in place by September 1.
  • Justice Lalit, who was administered oath as the 49th CJI, has already announced that he would strive to have one Constitution Bench functioning throughout the year; streamline the system of urgent mentioning and bring transparency to the system.
  • The CJI's announcement regarding the new system of listing of urgent matters came after Mehta sought to know about the mechanism of "mentioning" of urgent matters.

Babri Masjid Demolition: Supreme Court Draws Curtains on Contempt Petitions against UP Officials

  • The Supreme Court closed contempt petitions against the officials of Uttar Pradesh and others arising out of the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992.
  • The Apex Court noted with the passage of time & in view of the 2019 SC verdict on Ayodhya, the contempt cases don't survive any further.
  • At the same time, the court said that the petitioner Aslam Bhure is no longer in this world.
  • The court said that the issue cannot be continued after the Supreme Court's November 9, 2019 judgment deciding the Ayodhya land dispute between Hindus and Muslims. Therefore, the contempt proceedings are closed.
