Mexican President Proposes Global Peace Commission Led by 3 Leaders Including PM Modi
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is planning to submit a written proposal to the UN to create a commission, made up of three world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to promote a world truce for a period of five years.
The aim of the commission would be to present a proposal to stop the wars around the world and reach an agreement to seek a truce for at least five years.
Calling for an end to warlike actions, the Mexican President has invited China, Russia and the United States, to seek peace and hoped the three countries "will listen and accept an intermediation such as the one we are proposing".
Samudrayaan Mission: In a first, India to Send Humans 6,000 Metres Deep in Ocean
To unlock the mysteries in the heart of the deep sea waters, India undertook mega ocean mission 'Samudrayaan'. The country aims to send a team of experts into the deep sea to carry out various deep underwater studies.
Samudrayaan Mission is aimed to develop a self-propelled manned submersible to carry three human beings to a water depth of 6,000 meters in the ocean with a suite of scientific sensors and tools for deep ocean exploration. It has an endurance of 12 hours of operational period and 96 hours in case of emergency.
The manned submersible will allow scientific personnel to observe and understand unexplored deep-sea areas by direct interventions. Further, it will enhance the capability for deep sea man rated vehicle development.
The projected timeline is five years for the period 2020-2021 to 2025-2026.

ISRO Successfully Tests Gaganyaan Low Altitude Escape Motor from Andhra
In another important milestone in the Gaganyaan project, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully carried out the test-firing of the Low Altitude Escape Motor (LEM) of Crew Escape System, from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
The Crew Escape System (CES) takes away the Crew module of the Gaganyaan mission in case of any eventuality and rescues the astronauts. In case of mission-abort during the initial phase of flight, LEM provides required thrust to CES, to take away Crew Module from the launch vehicle.
Manisha Kalyan, Sunil Chhetri Named AIFF Footballers of the Year 2021-22
Indian men's national football team skipper Sunil Chhetri and women's team midfielder Manisha Kalyan were chosen as the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) footballers of the year for the 2021-22 season.
Chhetri and Manisha were nominated for the award by their respective national coaches, Igor Stimac and Thomas Dennerby.
Chhetri scored four goals from as many appearances for the national team this year, raising his international goals tally to 84 - only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi among active footballers. This is the seventh time Chhetri was named the men's footballer of the year and the first since 2018.
The AIFF also announced Martina Thokchom and Vikram Partap Singh as the emerging players for the season.
Bhavani Devi Bags Gold at Commonwealth Fencing Senior Women's Championship
Indian ace fencer Bhavani Devi won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2022 in the Senior Women's Sabre Individual category.
She defeated Veronika Vasileva of Australia 15-10 to win the title in London, the UK.
Bhavani Devi scripted history by becoming the lone Indian fencer to qualify for Tokyo Olympics after she reached the quarter-final of the 2020 Fencing World Cup in Hungary. She qualified through the adjusted Official Ranking Method (AOR).
Former West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Dhankhar in a brief ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dhankhar's predecessor M. Venkaiah Naidu were among the dignitaries present at the ceremony. With Dhankhar also acting as the chairman of the Rajya Sabha by virtue of being the vice-president, both the Houses of Parliament would be presided over by leaders from Rajasthan.
Dhankar, who was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee for the vice-presidential post, defeated opposition's candidate Margaret Alva by a margin of 346 votes.
Madhur Verma Appointed Head of ACB
Senior IPS officer Madhur Verma was appointed the head of the anti-corruption branch (ACB).
Verma, a 2005 batch IPS officer, was earlier an additional commissioner in the Delhi police's armed police department.
The ACB is mandated to probe graft cases against Delhi government officials.
Verma has earlier worked as the DCPs of crime branch, the police's North district and the New Delhi district.
Verma was also Delhi police's public relations officer until mid 2019.
Sunil Bansal, General Secretary of BJP UP Appointed as the National General Secretary of the Party
Signalling its intent to sharpen the party's strategy and enhance its reach in states where it has not been in power so far, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) appointed one of its chief strategists, Sunil Bansal as the national general secretary.
Bansal who was the general secretary (organisation) in Uttar Pradesh (UP), will be in charge of Telangana, Odisha and West Bengal (WB), the three states which the party has set its sights on. While it emerged as the second largest party in WB, in Odisha its presence is still nascent. BJP is also aggressively preparing for the 2023 assembly polls in Telangana.
The appointment made by party president JP Nadda came a day after the BJP lost power in Bihar, where it ran a coalition government with the JDU.
International Youth Day is observed every year on August 12 to highlight the myriad issues faced by young people across the world. The day also highlights the role of youth in matters like education, sustainable development, global peace, social justice and inclusiveness.
Young people, who attended the first session of the UN's World Youth Forum in Vienna, Austria, in 1991, suggested that an International Youth Day be declared to help raise money for the United Nations Youth Fund. At the first session of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, held in Lisbon in August 1998, August 12 was declared International Youth Day. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) endorsed this proclamation in 1999.
The theme for 2022's edition of International Youth Day was "Intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages." Cooperation and harmony between the youth and older generations is necessary to achieve sustainable development goals, as per Agenda 2030 of the United Nations (UN).
151 police Personnel Awarded Excellence in Investigation Medal by Home Ministry
The Union Home Minister's Medal for Excellence in Investigation award for 2022 was awarded to 151 police personnel across various states and union territories and governmental agencies.
Twenty-eight women out of the total awardees received the medal.
Amongst the 151 awards, 15 were conferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), 11 to the Maharashtra Police, 10 each to Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh Police, and eight each to Kerala Police, Rajasthan Police and West Bengal Police.
The remaining were awarded to the other states and union territories. Also, five awards medals were conferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) personnel.
Union Cabinet Approves Extension of PMAY-Urban Till Dec 31, 2024
The Union Cabinet approved continuation of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) till December, 2024.
Launched in June, 2015, the original deadline for the scheme - Housing for All' Mission - aimed at providing pucca houses to all eligible urban beneficiaries was March 2022.
Based on the request of states and Union territories, the Union Cabinet decided to extend the implementation period of PMAY-Urban till December 31, 2024.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched a digital platform called the 'SPARK' space museum for showcasing several ISRO missions with an interactive interface. The digital platform known as the 'SPARK' space museum was launched by the Chairman of ISRO, S. Somnath. This idea by ISRO is a new initiative while celebrating the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav marking 75 years of Independence.
This digital space museum 'SPARK' has an interactive interface through which users can interact with the site easily.
The platform hosts several documents, images, and videos related to ISRO's launch of vehicles, satellites, and scientific missions.
The secretary of the Department of Spaces S. Somnath and major Directors of various ISRO centres appreciate this initiative.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Releases Book 'Rusty Skies & Golden Winds'
Union Minister of State (IC) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, launched a poetry book titled 'Rusty Skies and Golden Winds' written by 11 years old Sannidhya Sharma, student of class 7th. The book is published by Blue-Rose Publishers. The Union Minister lauded the efforts of the little author in crystallising his thoughts in the shape of a collection of his poems and his rare achievement at this tender age and wished him a bright future.
The 100 page book is an anthology of 40 poems in which the budding author defines the nature of the world, at the moment. He lets himself be carried away by the unknown force and eyes the blood on the paper bravely. Throughout the book, the author wishes for a gust of golden winds, and sends his soul on an adventure to discover all those shallow thoughts buried in the soils of time as he lifelessly stares into the rusty skies of dust.
Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was appointed 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI), a law ministry notification. He will assume charge on August 27 after incumbent N.V. Ramana demits office on August 26.
Justice Lalit would have a brief tenure of less than three months. He will turn 65 on November 8 when he demits office.
On August 4, Justice Ramana had set in motion the process of appointment of his successor by recommending the name of Justice Lalit, the most senior judge, to the Centre. The CJI personally had handed over a copy of his letter of recommendation to Justice Lalit.
