Japan Calls for Immediate Cancellation of China Military Drills

  • Japan's Prime Minister condemned China's firing of ballistic missiles during military drills around Taiwan, calling them a serious problem that impacts Japan's national security and the safety of its citizens".
  • Five Chinese missiles appeared to have fallen in the country's exclusive economic zone, with four of those believed to have flown over Taiwan's main island.
  • China's actions this time around have a serious impact on the peace and stability of our region and the international community," said Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
  • Pelosi was in Tokyo for the final leg of an Asian tour that included a stop in Taiwan, infuriating Beijing, which launched its largest-ever military drills around the self-ruled island in response.

Axis Bank to Wind up UK Subsidiary after Deal with OpenPayd Fails

  • As per reports, India's third largest private lender Axis Bank is winding up its subsidiary in Britain after a deal with financial firm OpenPayd failed.
  • Axis Bank first said in 2020 that it will be winding down its UK operations. Currently, the bank's international strategy is to focus on Indian corporates that have global operations, it said in an investor presentation in the results of the quarter ended June.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Chairman Israel Makov to Retire

  • Drug major Sun Pharmaceutical Industries said that its Chairman Israel Makov will retire from the company on August 29, 2022.
  • Makov is retiring upon the completion of his current term post the company's Annual General Meeting after having led the Mumbai-based company for ten years.
  • He was appointed a Board member and the Chairman in 2012.

United Launch Alliance's Atlas V Rocket Launched with US Space Force Satellite

  • The United Launch Alliance (ULA) launched an Atlas V rocket with the sixth and final Space Based Infrared System Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (SBIRS GEO 6) spacecraft for the United States Space Force's Space Systems Command. The ULA is a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Boeing. The rocket was launched from the Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
  • SBIRS is an early missile warning system that will be the successor to the Defense Support Program, whose first satellite launch took place in the 1950s. SBIRS will consist of a constellation of three satellites in geosynchronous orbit and two other classified satellites on highly elliptical orbits around the poles.

Punjab to Host the Punjab Khed Mela from August 29

  • With an aim to identify talent, making conducive environment for sports and increasing health awareness, the sports department is going to organise "Khed Mela" in which events of 30 sports will be held in under 14 to 60 years veteran group.
  • The "Khed Mela" to be held from block to the state level will kick start on the occasion of the National Sports Day on August 29, said Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer after a meeting with all district sports officers.
  • Three lakh Punjabi athletes are expected to take part in the Sports Mela, according to the Sports Minister.
  • The victors of the sanctioned sporting events will be given grades in their particular sports, and the state-level winners will also get certificates and monetary awards totaling five crore rupees.
  • Athletics, Weightlifting, Badminton, Cricket, Cycling, Shooting, Archery, Bodybuilding, Fencing, Gymnastics, Rowing, Football, Softball, Hockey, Netball, Handball, Kick Boxing, Judo, Archery, Kabaddi, Gatka, Kho-Kho, Volleyball, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Boxing, Swimming, Wrestling, and Tug of War are just a few of the sports in which competitions will be held.

State-of-the-Art Police Command Centre Comes Up in Hyderabad

  • A state-of-the-art command and control centre termed "Police Towers", a nerve centre for operations and disaster management, was inaugurated by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao.
  • Telangana State Police Integrated Command and Control Centre (TSPICCC), the 83.5-metre tall building, features a 480-seat auditorium, a media centre, training facilities, and conference halls spread across 6.42 lakh square feet, including parking on 2.16 lakh square feet, solar panels, STP, and a glass facade, among other amenities.
  • The Hyderabad Police Commissionerate is housed in Tower A - a 20 storey building and Tower B is a Technology Fusion Centre, designed to gather data from various apps, emergency response systems, such as Dial 100, social media, and highways watch from all over the state so that there can be an integrated approach.
  • Tower C houses an auditorium and Tower D will have a media and training centre. There is a multi-agency integrated command control centre located on Tower E's fourth, fifth, and sixth floors.
  • The tower houses separate chambers for the state Home Minister, state police chief and other top officials. There is also a war room on the seventh floor from where the Chief Minister can oversee disaster relief or emergency operations.

Goa Police and Blockchain Network 5ire Agree to work to Build Smart Policing

  • In order to digitise its operations, Goa Police inked an agreement (MoU) with Level-1 blockchain network 5ire. S.P. Crime, Nidhin Valsan, IPS, and Pratik Gauri, the founder and CEO of 5ire, signed the MoU. Goa would become the first police state in India to totally abandon paper with the signing of this MoU.
  • With the implementation of a smart policing solution to increase openness and efficiency in policing, the MoU would establish a public-private collaboration between 5ire and the Goa Police.
  • It will make processes more efficient and give stakeholders a more accurate picture of all events. The digitisation and digitalization of offline systems would also be aided by the MoU.

A first, Navy's All-woman Crew Conducts Reconnaissance and Surveillance Operation

  • Five women officers of the Indian Navy created history by completing the first all-woman independent maritime reconnaissance and surveillance mission in the North Arabian Sea onboard a Dornier 228 aircraft.
  • The mission, launched from the Naval Air Enclave at Porbandar in Gujarat. The aircraft was captained by the mission commander, Lt Cdr Aanchal Sharma. She had pilots Lt Shivangi and Lt Apurva Gite and Tactical and Sensor Officers Lt Pooja Panda and SLt Pooja Shekhawat in her team. The Naval Air Squadron based at Porbandar operates the state-of-the-art Dornier 228 maritime reconnaissance aircraft.
  • The women officers received months of ground training and comprehensive mission briefings in the run-up to this historic sortie.

National Handloom Day

  • The National Handloom Day is observed on August 7 every year in India. On this day, the government and other organisations honour the handloom weaving community for their immense contribution to the socio-economic development of the country. The day also marks India's reaffirmation of protecting its glorious handloom heritage and empowering weavers and workers with greater opportunities to ensure livelihoods.
  • In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared August 7 as National Handloom Day.

India Observes 2nd 'Javelin Throw Day'

  • The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) celebrated the second 'Javelin Throw Day' on August 7, 2022. The day was first observed in 2021 in honour of Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won India's first Olympic gold medal in athletics at Tokyo. This decision to observe Javelin Throw Day is also an attempt to attract more youth towards the sport and get champions ready for a bright future in athletics ahead.
  • Neeraj Chopra scripted history at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo when he threw the javelin to a distance of 87.58m to end India's medal drought in athletics at the Olympics.

Delhi University to Launch Unique Scheme called 'Competence Enhancement Scheme'

  • The University of Delhi, in its Centenary Year, is going to launch a unique scheme called the Competence Enhancement Scheme (CES). Along with implementing the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) from the academic year 2022-23.
  • This scheme also got approval at the academic council meeting of the university. The scheme will be launched early next year (2023) as a part of the Centenary celebrations of the university.
  • The 'Competition Enhancement Scheme' is a scheme that gives an opportunity to individuals from different fields to study at DU to enhance their knowledge and understanding of any subject being taught at Delhi University.

Archaelogists Discover 800-Year-Old Ancient Palace that May have Belonged to Genghis Khan's Grandson

  • Archaelogists discovered the remains of an ancient palace that may have belonged to Genghis Khan's grandson Hulagu Khan in the Çaldıran district of eastern Turkey's Van province.
  • While the palace in question has not been definitively identified as a lost Khan residence, the excavation team, led by Ersel Çağlıtütuncigil of the Izmir Katip Çelebi University Turkish-Islamic Archeology Department, unearthed shards of tricolour-glazed ceramics and pottery, porcelain, bricks, and glazed roof tiles.
  • Based on the combination of found artifacts and historical records, researchers working under Turkey's General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism believe that this could be the first known architectural remains dating to the Ilkhanate.

Andhra Pradesh High Court: PIL Jurisdiction is Invoked to Protect Interest of Oppressed Class of Citizenry

  • The Andhra Pradesh High Court observed that Public Interest Litigation (PIL) jurisdiction is invoked to protect the interest of oppressed class of citizenry and not for deciding pure legal issues, which should be left to be decided in an appropriate inter-party lis (suit).
  • The Division Bench of Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice D.V.S.S. Somayajulu dismissed a PIL filed by President of Muslim Hakkula Porata Samithi, seeking declaration that the AP State Waqf Board, in collecting Waqf Fund on donations, nazaranas or presentations given by Muslim devotees to Masjids or Dargas or Anzuman Institutions belonging to the Waqf Board in the State, as illegal, void.
  • Through the PIL the Petitioner further seeks direction that AP State Waqf Board not to collect such Waqf Fund on donations, nazaranas or presentationsgiven by Muslim devotees to Masjids or Dargas or Anjuman Institutions belonging tothe Waqf Board.
