Bajram Begaj Takes Oath as Albania's New President

  • The newly-elected President of the Republic of Albania, Bajram Begaj, took oath at a swearing-in ceremony in the parliament.
  • Begaj was elected President on June 4. A total of 83 lawmakers participated in the voting that took place in the plenary session in the parliament, where Begaj received 78 votes in favour, while four lawmakers voted against and there was one abstention.
  • He was a major general (Maj Gen) and held the post of chief of general staff of the Albanian Armed Forces before the election as President of Albania, a post he is set to hold over the next five years.

Rolls-Royce Names Tufan Erginbilgic as CEO

  • Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc named oil-industry veteran Tufan Erginbilgic as its next chief executive officer, replacing Warren East when he steps down at the end of this year.
  • Erginbilgic spent 20 years at BP Plc, and in his most recent role before leaving in 2020 led the firm's downstream business, responsible for refining, petrochemicals and service-station activities. He is currently a partner at private-equity firm Global Infrastructure Partners.

India Adds 5 New Wetlands, Total Ramsar Sites Now at 54

  • Five more Indian sites were recognised as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Three of these wetlands are in Tamil Nadu and one each in Mizoram and Madhya Pradesh, making a total of 54 Ramsar sites in the country.
  • The sites include the Karikili Bird Sanctuary, Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest & Pichavaram Mangrove in Tamil Nadu, Pala wetland in Mizoram, and Sakhya Sagar in Madhya Pradesh.
  • India has the largest number of Ramsar wetlands in Asia, according to the ministry. With 54 wetlands, the area under Ramsar sites had increased to 1,098, 518 hectares.

Ashish Chauhan Quits as BSE Chief, to Join NSE as MD & CEO

  • Ashishkumar Chauhan resigned as Managing Director and CEO of BSE and was relieved of his roles and responsibilities at the exchange.
  • Chauhan would be joining rival National Stock Exchange (NSE) as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
  • He was part of the founding team of NSE but left it in 2000 for various roles at Reliance Industries group, before returning to the stock exchange arena as deputy CEO of BSE in 2009 and then as CEO in 2012.

First All Women-run Cooperative Bank Coming up in Rajasthan

  • The first all women-run financial institution in the cooperative sector is coming up in Rajasthan following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Telangana government's Stree Nidhi Credit Cooperative Federation. The new body would promote women's empowerment by supporting their enterprises.
  • The Rajasthan Mahila Nidhi would be set up on the lines of the Stree Nidhi of Telangana. The MoU was signed between Rajasthan Grameen Ajeevika Vikas Parishad's (Rajeevika) Mission Director Manju Rajpal and Stree Nidhi Managing Director G. Vidya Sagar Reddy in the presence of Rural Development Minister Ramesh Chand Meena.
  • Mahila Nidhi would strengthen the women's self help groups in the State by extending timely loan facility for their enterprises. The institution would be operated entirely by women and would act as a complementary body with the formal banking system.

Nokia Awards Wipro a Five-year Contract for Digital Transformation

  • Wipro Ltd., a company with its headquarters in Bengaluru, signed a five-year contract for digital transformation with Nokia of Finland. The new contract expands on a connection that was first formed more than 20 years ago. Wipro would provide business services in support of Nokia's updated operating model, putting a special emphasis on process optimization, touchless processing, and improved user and customer experience across order management, supply chain, finance, and accounting operations.

Russia to Quit International Space Station 'after 2024'

  • Russia decided to quit the International Space Station "after 2024", the newly-appointed chief of Moscow's space agency told President Vladimir Putin.
  • The decision came weeks after the US criticised Russian astronauts for using the Space Station to push political narratives after cosmonauts displayed flags of Ukrainian areas controlled by Russian forces.
  • Russia and the United States have worked side by side on the ISS, which has been in orbit since 1998.
  • The space station is jointly run by the space agencies of Russia, the U.S., Europe, Japan and Canada.

Scientists Discover Places on the Moon where it's always 'Sweater Weather'

  • A team led by planetary scientists has discovered shady locations within pits on the moon that always hover around a comfortable 63 degrees Fahrenheit. The pits, and caves to which they may lead, would make safer, more thermally stable base camps for lunar exploration and long-term habitation than the rest of the moon's surface, which heats up to 260 degrees during the day and drops to 280 degrees below zero at night.

Bisheshwar Nandi is Indian Women's Gymnastics Coach for Commonwealth Games 2022

  • Gymnastics coach Bishweshwar Nandi, who guided Dipa Karmakar to an unprecedented fourth-place finish in the Rio Olympics in 2016, was named as the Indian women's team coach for the Commonwealth Games.
  • Bishweshwar replaced Rohit Jaiswal, who was vacated from his position after gymnast Aruna Budda Reddy accused him that he video-graphed her without consent.

Mastercard Set to Replace Paytm as Title Sponsor for all BCCI Matches

  • Global payments and technology company Mastercard is set to replace Indian digital payments company Paytm as the title sponsor for all international and domestic cricket matches organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
  • The board has, reportedly, accepted Paytm's plea for the reassignment of its title rights. Paytm has been BCCI's title sponsor since 2015, and renewed the contract in August 2019.

World Athletics Championships 2022 Medal Tally

  • The United States topped the medal table standings with 33 medals overall, which included 13 gold, 9 silver, and 11 bronze medals. The total is also the most by any country at a single World Athletics Championships.
  • Ethiopia, with 10 medals overall finished second in the standings after collecting four gold medals, two silver, and two bronze, the same amount of total medals collected by Jamaica which ended with two gold, seven silver, and one bronze.
  • The United States, which hosted the World Athletics Championships for the first time, also dominated the points overall with 328, with Jamaica second with 111, Ethiopia (106) and Kenya (104).

India Contributes $2.5 million to United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East

  • India contributed USD 2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
  • Director of the West Asia and North Africa Division of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Sunil Kumar presented the cheque of USD 2.5 million to the UNRWA Director of Partnerships of the Department of External Relations, Karim Amer in a signing ceremony at UNRWA headquarters in East Jerusalem.
  • Karim Amer expressed gratitude and appreciated India for its continuous efforts toward the Palestinian refugees.
  • The UNRWA, which was established as a humanitarian agency in 1949, is fully funded through voluntary contributions and grants from donor countries.

Punjab Government's Top Lawyer Quits

  • The Punjab government's top lawyer Anmol Rattan Sidhu resigned citing personal reasons.
  • Mr. Sidhu was appointed Advocate General by the new Aam Aadmi Party government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in March this year (2022).
  • He had replaced Senior Advocate D.S. Patwalia, who was appointed by the previous Congress government led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi in November 2021.
  • The Advocate General's resignation is the second high-profile exit of senior officials in just four months of the Aam Aadmi Party, or AAP, government. The first to quit was former police chief V.K. Bhawra.

Good Friday Agreement Architect David Trimble Dies

  • David Trimble, the Northern Irish leader who steered the region's Protestant majority into an historic peace deal with their Catholic rivals that earned him a Nobel Peace Prize, died aged 77.
  • Trimble, who became Northern Irish first minister in the power-sharing government that emerged from the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, was one of the chief architects of the accord that mostly ended three decades of bloodshed in the region.
  • Trimble and Irish nationalist John Hume jointly received the Nobel Prize in 1998 for their roles in helping end the violence between Catholic nationalists seeking Irish unity and pro-British Protestants wishing to stay in the United Kingdom that claimed some 3,600 lives.

Bengal's 'One Rupee Doctor' Sushovan Bandyopadhyay Passes Away

  • Sushovan Bandyopadhyay famous as Bengal's 'one rupee doctor' passed away in Kolkata.
  • A doctor and a politician, Bandyopadhyay treated patients for close to 60 years. He had treated people for just one rupee and is fondly known as 'Ek Takar Daktar' (one rupee doctor).
  • He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020. The same year his name was recorded in the Guinness World Records for treating the maximum number of patients.
  • He is an ex-MLA from Bolpur seat and had contested on Congress ticket in 1984. He was a member of Trinamool Congress in the past and was its Birbhum district president but had later quit the party.

CRPF Observes 84th Raising Day

  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), observed its 84th Raising Day on 27 July 2022. The day celebrates the immense and unparalleled contribution of the force in upholding the unity, integrity, and sovereignty of the nation. CRPF is India's largest Central Armed Police Force, which operates under the authority of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • CRPF came into existence as the 'Crown Representative's Police' on 27 July 1939. After Independence, it became the Central Reserve Police Force on the enactment of the 'CRPF Act' on 28 December 1949, which constituted CRPF as an armed force of the Union.
  • After Independence, CRPF contingents were tasked to check infiltration and trans-border crimes in Kutch, Rajasthan, and Sindh borders. They were, subsequently, deployed on the Pakistan border in Jammu & Kashmir following Pakistan's infiltration.
  • During the 1962 Indo-China war, the force once again assisted the Indian Army in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Further, in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars, CRPF provided shoulder-to-shoulder support to the Indian Army, both on the Western and Eastern borders.
  • CPRF was the first paramilitary force in India, which sent its forces in the United Nations Peacekeeping Missions.

Former Indian Army Chief Gen Naravane, Ex US Defence Secretary Honoured for Strengthening Indo-US Ties

  • Former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane was honoured by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) for his role in strengthening ties between India and US.
  • The USISPF presented global leadership and public service awards to those persons who have been instrumental in strengthening ties between the US and India.
  • Along with Naravane, former US Defence Secretary General Jim Mattis was also awarded the public service award.

Lok Sabha Passes Family Courts Bill

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Family Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2022 that seeks to amend the Family Courts Act, 1984 to establish family courts in Himachal Pradesh with effect from February 15, 2019 and in Nagaland with effect from September 12, 2008.
  • The Bill also seeks to insert a new Section 3A to retrospectively validate all actions under the said Act taken by the State Government of Himachal Pradesh and Nagaland and the Family Courts of those states prior to the commencement of the Family Courts (Amendment) Act, 2022.

Lucknow University Becomes First UP Educational Institute to Get NAAC A++ Rating

  • In a big achievement for the 102-year-old Lucknow University, it received an A++ rating from NAAC under the direction of Governor Anandiben Patel, Chancellor of State Universities of Uttar Pradesh.
  • In doing so, the university became the first educational institute in Uttar Pradesh to get a NAAC A rating.
  • A NAAC A++ rating is the highest rating that can be conferred upon a university. The university was evaluated on various points by NAAC and accredited with a CGPA of 3.55 on a seven point scale.
  • The NAAC rating will now stand for a period of five years from July 26, 2022, onwards after which it will need to be re-evaluated again.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island Given to A&N Administration to Enhance Tourism

  • The historic Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island was transferred from the Andaman and Nicobar Command to the Andaman & Nicobar Administration for further development of the island's infrastructure and tourism. During the formal ceremony on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, Commander-in-Chief of A&N Command Lt. General Ajai Singh symbolically gave Dy. Commissioner, South Andaman Suneel Anchipaka control of the island. He also recalled the significance of this island historically and the sequence of events connected to it. He anticipated the island's general growth as a tourism attraction under the management of the administration.
  • The island was under Administrative Control of INS Jarwa since 1967. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island had been Administrative headquarters of British rule in the islands till the Japanese occupied it in 1942. The island had Chief Commissioner Bungalow and other structures which got damaged during Second World War. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose also stayed on the island during his visit to Andaman and Nicobar in 1943.
  • In December 2018, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island was given a new name by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was formerly referred to as Ross Island. The island welcomes visitors and is a popular tourist destination.

World Airport Traffic Dataset 2021: New Delhi among Top 20 Busiest Airports

  • The Airports Council International (ACI) World released the annual World Airport Traffic Dataset to reveal the global air traffic rankings of the top 20 aviation industries for the full year 2021. The World Airport Traffic Dataset is the industry's most comprehensive airport statistics dataset featuring airport traffic for over 2,600 airports in more than 180 countries and territories. It provides a view of air transport demand across the world's airports in three areas: passengers (international and domestic), air cargo (freight and mail) and aircraft movements (air transport movements and general aviation).
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has topped the 2021 Ranking with 7.6 crore passengers in terms of passenger footfall in the year 2021.
  • From India, the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi was ranked among the top 20, as the 13th busiest airport. IGIA witnessed 3.7 crore passenger footfall in 2021, which is 30.3% more than 2.8 crore in 2020 when IGI was ranked 16th.
