World Bank Appoints Indian National Indermit Gill as Chief Economist

  • The World Bank appointed Indermit Gill, an Indian national, chief economist and senior vice-president for development economics at the multilateral development bank.
  • Indermit Gill brings to this role a combination of leadership, invaluable expertise and practical experience working with country governments on macroeconomic imbalances, growth, poverty, institutions, conflict, and climate change.
  • Gill is only the second Indian to serve as chief economist at the World Bank. Kaushik Basu was the first, having served in the job from 2012-2016. Raghuram Rajan and Gita Gopinath have served as chief economists at the International Monetary Fund, the sister organisation of the World Bank.

HDFC Securities Partners Equitas SFB to Offer Demat, Trading Services

  • Stock broking company HDFC Securities partnered with Equitas Small Finance Bank to provide its clients with a demat account and broking investment services.
  • With the new partnership, Equitas Small Finance Bank would offer its customers a "3-in-1″ account for accessing the services of HDFC Securities.
  • Also, all Equitas Small Finance Bank customers would be able to open their demat and trading accounts for buying and selling shares and trading in futures, options and even currencies.
  • HDFC Securities offers investment and direct trading services through buying and selling of equities, along with
  • currency derivatives, mutual funds, NCDs, fixed deposits, bonds, and more.

Ex-L&T Infotech CEO Sanjay Jalona Joins ChrysCapital

  • Private equity investor ChrysCapital Funds,announced the appointment of former L&T Infotech CEO Sanjay Jalona as an Operating Partner for investments in the business services sector.
  • He would be based out of the US and will work with the advisory team led by Akshat Babbar, in sourcing, identifying, evaluating, managing and exiting investments made in this sector.
  • Jalona, who has over three decades of experience in the IT services industry, is well known in the tech industry for L&T Infotech's transformation into a technology consulting and digital solutions company. He guided the firm through its IPO and helped it cross the $2 billion revenue milestone.

Zimbabwe Debuts Gold Coins as Legal Tender to Stem Inflation

  • Zimbabwe launched gold coins to be sold to the public in a bid to tame runaway inflation that has further eroded the country's unstable currency.
  • The unprecedented move was announced by the country's central bank, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, to boost confidence in the local currency.
  • Trust in Zimbabwe's currency is low after people saw their savings wiped out by hyperinflation in 2008 which reached 5 billion, according to the IMF.
  • The first batch of the coins was minted outside the country but eventually they will be produced locally, according to the governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, John Mangudya.
  • The coins can be used for purchases in shops, depending on whether the shop has enough change.

Scientists Discover Deadly Pool at Bottom of Ocean that Kills anything that Swims into it

  • Scientists from the University of Miami discovered a lethal pool at the bottom of the Red Sea that kills anything that swims into it. As per research, the brine pool was uncovered 1.7 kilometres beneath the surface using a remotely operated underwater vehicle.
  • The researchers explained that a brine pool is a depression in the seafloor that is filled with highly concentrated salt water and other chemical elements which is saltier than the surrounding ocean. These underwater pools can stun or kill animals and even pickle them alive.

Annesha Ghosh Replaces Sandeep Mehta as Press Attache for Commonwealth

  • Annesha Ghosh replaced Sandeep Mehta as press attache of the Indian contingent for the Commonwealth Games.
  • Ghosh, a freelance journalist, was roped in to handle social media, among other things.
  • The CWG is scheduled to begin on July 28 with a total of 215 Indian athletes participating in 141 events across 19 sporting disciplines.

World Athletics Championships: Armand Duplantis Breaks his Own Pole Vault Record

  • Armand Duplantis brought down the curtain on the World Championships in stunning fashion, breaking his own pole vault world record in the final act of the 10-day track and field meet in Eugene.
  • The Swede sailed over 6.21 metres to surpass his previous mark by one centimetre, set in March en route to winning gold at the World Indoor Championships, and completed his collection of medals by claiming a first world title.
  • American Chris Nilsen took silver with 5.94 metres on countback from Ernest John Obiena, whose bronze was the first-ever world medal for the Philippines.

BCCI Introduces a New A+ Category for Umpires

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced a new A+ category for its umpires and Nitin Menon, along with ten other officials, were grouped in the category. Umpires in A+ and A categories are paid Rs. 40,000 a day for a first-class game while Rs. 30,000 a day are paid in the B and C category.
  • The others in the A+ category include four international umpires: Anil Chaudhary, Madangopal Jayaraman, Virender Kumar Sharma and K. N. Ananthapadmabhanan.
  • Rohan Pandit, Nikhil Patwardhan, Sadashiv Iyer, Ulhas Gandhe and Navdeep Singh Sidhu are also part of the A+ category.
  • Twenty umpires form the A group, 60 are in Group B, 46 in Group C and 11 in Group D which falls in the 60-65 age bracket.

PM Narendra Modi to Launch International Bullion Exchange

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the country's first international bullion exchange at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).
  • He will also lay the foundation stone of the unified regulator International Financial Services Centres Authority's headquarters building.
  • GIFT City is India's maiden International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).

Grant Thornton Partners with JLU to Open India's First Analytics Centre

  • Grant Thornton India signed a Memorandum of Understanding with JagranLakecity University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on establishing India's first Centre for Analytics at the university campus followed by a round table discussion on Data Analytics for Businesses - Transforming Data into Actionable Insights.
  • The JLU-Grant Thornton Centre for Analytics has been established with a mission to develop students as Business Analytics Experts and establish a ready resource for the industry for their Data Analytics requirements and cater to academic programs, specialized training, faculty-based research development, and support for entrepreneurial ventures.

Rural Women Overtake their Urban Counterparts in Participation of Labour Force during 2017-2021

  • In a manifestation of growing advancement of the demography of rural-India, women from rural areas overtook their urban counterparts in participation of the country's labour force during the period from 2017-2021.
  • In effect, the development demonstrates the Modi government's policy thrust to abridge the rural-urban divide, buff up the rural economy and consequently check-mate migration and overcrowding of urban centres.
  • Data prepared by the Union Labour Ministry was shared with the Rajya Sabha.
  • A key derivative of the data is that during the covid-affected year of 2020-21, the participation of women in both the rural and the urban spectrum were on the increase.
  • The consolidated figure of all-India female labour force participation rate (in percentage) during the corresponding years of 2017-18 to 2020-211 was 23.3, 24.5, 30, and 32.5, respectively.

  • Savita Kanswal from Lonthru village in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi became the first woman in India who successfully climbed Mt. Everest and Mt. Makaluin, Asia, in just 16 days.
  • Her passion started in Class 11 when she got a chance for a 10-day Adventure Foundation Course. It was the course where her love for mountains began.
  • She started her mountaineering course in 2013 at the NIM (Nehru Mountaineering Institute), Uttarkashi.

Kargil Vijay Diwas 2022

  • Kargil Vijay Diwas or Kargil Victory Day is the celebration of India's historic win against Pakistan on July 26, 1999. The Indian Army successfully removed Pakistani forces who were illegally occupying a hilltop at the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) at Kargil, Ladakh. To commemorate this victory and remember those who sacrificed their lives for this country, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated annually in India on July 26.

International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem

  • The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem (or World Mangrove Day) is celebrated annually on 26 July. The day is celebrated to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as "a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem" and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses.
  • The day was adopted by the General Conference of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2015. It was on this day in 1998, that a Greenpeace activist Hayhow Daniel Nanoto, died of a heart attack during a massive protest to re-establish the mangrove wetlands in Muisne, Ecuador.

Maharashtra: Ranjitsinh Disale Chosen for Abdul Kalam 'Pride of India' Award

  • Ranjitsinh Disale from Maharashtra was selected for the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Pride of India Award 2022. Mr. Disale was given the prestigious award at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.
  • Mr. Disale resigned as a Zilla Parishad teacher from the Solapur district to pursue higher studies in the USA. He won the USD 1 million Global Teacher Prize 2020 for his efforts to promote education among girls as well as triggering a quick-response (QR) coded textbook revolution in India.
  • He is also a recipient of the Global Teacher Award.

International Conference on Chemistry and Applications of Soft Materials

  • The CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram, hosted an International Conference on Chemistry and Applications of Soft Materials (CASM 2022) as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations to mark 75th year of Independence. Discussions on a variety of subjects, including self-assembly and supramolecular materials, soft material chemistry, physics, rheology, and photophysics, responsive and smart materials, gels, liquid crystals, polymers, macromolecules and framework materials, and functional nanomaterials, as well as soft material applications in electronics and energy, took place at the conference.
  • Around 300 delegates from within the country and abroad attended the conference. Renowned scientist T. Pradeep from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, inaugurated the event.

A Book Titled "Dilip Kumar: In the Shadow of a Legend" by Faisal Farooqui

  • A new book on the legendary actor of Indian cinema, Yusuf Khan, better known as Dilip Kumar, was released by author Faisal Farooqui. The book is titled "In the Shadow of a Legend: Dilip Kumar". The book is a tribute to Dilip Kumar the man more than Dilip Kumar the actor. Farooqui is the founder and CEO of Mouthshut.com, one of India's leading review and rating platforms.
  • In the book, Dilip Kumar: In the Shadow of a Legend, the author painted an intimate portrait of the actor, throwing light on some little-known anecdotes from his illustrious life. The book brings to us the real Dilip Kumar, away from the large screen that made him such an endearing figure for his fans. Dilip Kumar was much more than the actor that we have revered all these years.

I&B Minister Anurag Thakur Releases Books Showcasing Rare Pictures of Prez Kovind, his Predecessors

  • Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur released three books published by Directorate of Publications Division. Upon release the Minister presented the first copy of the books to President of India Ram Nath Kovind in presence of Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, President-elect Smt. Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The three books are:
  • Moods, Moments and Memories - Former Presidents of India (1950-2017) A Visual History
  • First Citizen - Pictorial Record of President Ram Nath Kovind's Term
  • Interpreting Geometries - Flooring of Rashtrapati Bhavan
  • The first book is a pictorial history that chronicles all the Presidents of India from the Dr. Rajendra Prasad till Shri Pranab Mukherjee and contains rare photographs sourced from Rashtrapati Bhavan archives. These photographs highlight some unique aspects of our Presidents' lives in the historic building, both personal & public.
  • The second book is dedicated to President Shri Ram Nath Kovind's tenure and contains rare photographs from Shri Kovind's village and his school days. It traces his journey from his village to Rashtrapati Bhavan, and will educate the readers on how a boy from humble beginnings went on to occupy the highest office in India.
  • The third book is a pictorial volume put together by the Chandigarh College of Architecture and contains the historic & one-of-a-kind flooring of Rashtrapati Bhavan shown with its unique, repetitive motifs and designs & use of rare stones. Third Bharat Gaurav Tourist Train �" Madurai to Varanasi

  • Continuing with theme-based tourist service, the third Bharat Gaurav train operated by a private player was flagged off from Madurai for Varanasi, covering many religious and tourist spots.
  • Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines Prahlad Joshi, flagged off the train from New Delhi through video-conference.
  • The theme-based tourist train with a 12-day round trip will cover Madurai, Chennai, Vijayawada, Puri, Kolkata, Gaya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj, featuring various tourism spots enroute.
  • The 14-coach train with pantry, AC, and sleeper facilities is operated by Travel Times Private Ltd, a private service provider for tourists.

SC Recommends 35 Names to Centre for Appointment as Judges in 6 HCs

  • In a significant step to fill vacancies in the higher judiciary, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice N. V. Ramana approved and recommended to the Centre the proposal for the elevation of 20 advocates and 15 judicial officers as judges in six High Courts.
