Outgoing UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson Narrowly Survives No-confidence Vote

  • Outgoing UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson survived a 'no-confidence' vote called by the opposition amid the ongoing campaign to pick his successor. Johnson won by 111 votes, with 349 for and 238 against, meaning the ruling Conservative Party will remain in office while it elects a new leader to replace Johnson after he quit earlier this month.
  • The Conservatives' win means the opposition - Labour - cannot force a general election, since the rules say another 'no confidence' vote can only be called 12 months later.
  • Britain avoided a general election, which would have been its third in the past five years.

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav Attends BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers' Meeting

  • Union Labour and Employment Minister Bhupender Yadav attended the BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers' Meeting held under the Chinese Presidency. The Ministers of the member countries Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa participated in the meeting. The discussions were held on three priority issues, namely - promoting green jobs for sustainable development, developing skills for resilient recovery, and protecting workers right in new forms of employment.
  • Mr. Yadav highlighted the steps taken by India to provide relief to workers during the pandemic. He also mentioned various initiatives taken towards providing free rations, enhancing the number of days of assured employment under MNREGA, and collateral-free loans provided to street vendors to help them resume their businesses under PM SVANidhi Yojana during the pandemic.

The World's Most and Least Powerful Passports

  • Japan, Singapore and South Korea have the most powerful passports as the world continues to recover from Covid-19, reversing pre-pandemic rankings that were dominated by European nations.
  • A Japanese passport provides hassle-free entry to 193 countries, one more than those from Singapore and South Korea, according to the latest Henley Passport Index from Henley & Partners, an immigration consultancy, released in July 2022.
  • Russian travel documents are ranked 50th, giving easy access to 119 nations. China placed 69th with access to 80 countries, India's passport ranked 87th and Afghanistan's passport is the least useful, getting the holder into only 27 countries.

Britain Breaks its Record for Highest Temperature as Europe Battles Heat Wave

  • Britain shattered its record for highest temperature ever registered, with a provisional reading of 39.1 degrees Celsius (102.4 degrees Fahrenheit), according to the country's weather office — and the heat was only expected to rise.
  • The highest temperature previously recorded in Britain was 38.7 C (101.7 F), a record set in 2019. The highest temperature ever registered 39.1 C (102.4 F) was in Charlwood, England in July 2022.

RBI Imposes Restrictions on Raigad Sahakari Bank

  • The RBI imposed several restrictions on Mumbai-based Raigad Sahakari Bank, including a withdrawal cap of Rs. 15,000 per customer, due to deterioration in the financial condition of the lender.
  • The cooperative bank, without the prior approval of RBI, cannot issue loans, make any investment, accept fresh deposits, among the restrictions.
  • The restrictions will remain in force for a period of six months.

Cardmembers can also earn accelerated reward points on flight, hotel bookings at standalone airlines and hotel websites/apps. Reward points earned can be redeemed on the rewards catalogue of Standard Chartered Bank, across multiple brands including EaseMyTrip.

CII-Exim Bank Conclave: Goyal Calls for Deepening Trade Ties with Africa

  • Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal called for expansion and diversification of India-Africa economic relations and inclusion of emerging areas, such as solar energy, start-ups, and digital infrastructure for partnership.
  • Goyal identified four major focus areas for the India-Africa partnership: solar power, military exchanges in the context of the security of the Indian Ocean, physical and digital infrastructure, health care, pharma and vaccines, and start-up ecosystem.
  • The trade between India and African countries has been balanced with exports of trade and services of about $40 billion and imports of $49 billion, Goyal said at the inauguration of 17th CII-Exim Bank conclave.

New Plasma Analyzer Flies on Rocketship Endurance

  • NASA launched the Endurance rocket to attempt to make the first measurements of Earth's global electric potential, whose lack of strength may be one reason Earth can support life. Dutch Domination Continues in Women's Hockey

  • The Netherlands women's hockey team beat Argentina 3-1 in the final to win its ninth World Cup title. It was the third consecutive title for the Dutch, who also have four Olympics gold. Australia beat Germany 2-1 to win bronze.
  • Heading into the fifteenth edition of the World Cup, Netherlands were the reigning champions and had won more women's World Cups than any other nation.

Mairaj Ahmad Khan of India Writes History by Winning gold Medal in Skeet

  • Two-time Olympian Mairaj Ahmad Khan created history and became the first Indian shooter to win the gold medal in the men's skeet event at the ISSF World Cup in Changwon, South Korea.
  • Mairaj Ahmad Khan recorded 37 hits out of a possible 40 in the final to win gold. South Korea's Minsu Kim struck 36 for silver while Ben Llewellin of Great Britain won bronze with 26 hits.

Former West Indies Captain Ramdin Retires from International Cricket

  • Former West Indies skipper Denesh Ramdin announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.
  • Ramdin played his last match for West Indies in a T20I in December 2019. However, he will continue to play franchise cricket.
  • He has played 74 Tests, 139 ODIs and 71 T20Is. He started out in Test cricket, making his debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo in July 2005.
  • Ramdin led West Indies in 17 matches – 13 Tests, three T20Is and an ODI after he was named West Indies' Test captain in 2014, taking over from Daren Sammy, who had retired from the format. Jason Holder replaced him at the helm in 2015.

Narendra Modi Unveils 'SPRINT Challenges' Collaborative Project for Indian Navy

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled 'SPRINT challenges', aimed at giving a boost to the usage of indigenous technology in the Indian Navy.
  • Modi unveiled the initiative at a naval seminar organised to engage Indian industry and academia towards achieving self-reliance in the defence sector.
  • The seminar was organised by the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) and the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM).
  • The NIIO, in cooperation with the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO), aims to induct at least 75 new indigenous technologies/products into the Indian Navy in sync with 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' commemorating 75 years of the country's Independence.
  • This collaborative project is named SPRINT — Supporting Pole-Vaulting in R&D through iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence), NIIO and TDAC (Technology Development Acceleration Cell).

International Chess Day

  • World Chess Day is an annual event celebrated on July 20 across the globe. The day brings attention to the popular board game, Chess players like Viswanathan Anand, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Magnus Carlsen, and highlights its positive impact on society.
  • On December 12, 2019, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recognised World Chess Day. The date of July 20 was chosen as on this day in 1924, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) was established in Paris. FIDE, having more than 150 chess federations as its members, has celebrated World Chess Day since 1966.

International Moon Day

  • July 20, 2022 marked the inaugural celebration of International Moon Day. The United Nations General Assembly, on December 9, 2021, recognised the proposal submitted by the Moon Village Association and several other groups within the organisation. The application was submitted to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).
  • The day celebrates one of the most memorable moments in human history. On July 20, 1969, US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to reach the lunar planet. It was the first time that a human had set foot on the Moon's surface.
  • Upon landing on the surface, with millions of eyes watching history being written, Neil Armstrong hopped down the ladder and said, "That is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." The Apollo 11 astronauts used the lunar module called Eagle to reach the surface.
  • The International Moon Day would be held annually and will aim at educating and promoting the sustainable utilisation and exploration of the Moon and the need for regulations of activities on and around the lunar planet.

Malayalam Filmmaker K. P. Kumaran Honoured with JC Daniel Award 2022

  • Malayalam filmmaker K. P. Kumaran was honoured with Kerala's highest film award, the JC Daniel Award. Kumaran won the award for his contribution to the Malayalam film industry. The award comprises of a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh, a citation and a plaque.
  • The filmmaker made his directorial debut with Athithi in 1975 and earned fame for his films like Rugmini, which won the National Award for Best feature film in Malayalam and the Kerala State Film Award in 1989. He is also known for films like Thenthulli, Laxmivijayam and Thottam.

Bill to Amend Family Courts Act Introduced in Lok Sabha

  • A bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha which seeks to amend Family Courts Act to provide for establishing family courts in Himachal Pradesh from February 15, 2019, and in Nagaland from September 12, 2008.
  • The bill was introduced by Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju.
  • The Family Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2022 was brought with the objective of overcoming the issue of lack of jurisdiction of family courts in the states of Himachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
  • The Family Courts Act 1984 was enacted for establishing family courts with a view to promote conciliation and secure speedy settlement of disputes relating to marriage and family affairs.
  • The Act came into force on September 14, 1984 and as of April 2022, there were 715 family courts established and functioning in 26 states and union territories, including three such courts in Himachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Supreme Court Protects Nupur Sharma from Coercive Action in all FIRs over Remarks on Prophet Mohammed

  • The Supreme Court protected BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma from any coercive action in multiple FIRs registered in various parts of the country following her televised remarks about Prophet Muhammed.
  • Appearing before a Bench of Justices Surya Kant and J. B. Pardiwala, Ms. Sharma's lawyer said that there is a continuing threat to her life.
  • This time, the Bench issued notice on her plea to either quash all the cases against her or, in the alternative, transfer them from various States to Delhi in order to safeguard her right against multiple prosecutions for the same offence. The Bench has sought responses from the States of West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra and Telangana in this regard.
