'Prachand': The First Made-in-India Light Combat Helicopters

  • The Indian Air Force inducted the first batch of made-in-India light combat helicopters. which are called 'Prachand'. This marks an important milestone, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, as the government's 'Atma Nirbhar Abhiyan' expands in the defence sector.
  • The induction took place at the airbase in Jodhpur, which holds a legacy for the Air Force. Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and IAF chief Air Chief Marshal V.R. Chaudhari were also present at the event.
  • The light combat helicopter have been developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Sujoy Lal Thaosen, Anish Dayal Singh Appointed New DGs of CRPF, ITBP

  • Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers Sujoy Lal Thaosen and Anish Dayal Singh were appointed as the new Directors General of the CRPF and ITBP, respectively.
  • Thaosen, a 1988-batch officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, is currently working as the director general (DG) of the border guarding force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and holding the additional charge of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) DG post fell vacant after IPS officer Kuldiep Singh (1986-batch West Bengal cadre) retired from service. Thaosen was holding the additional charge of ITBP DG after his batchmate and incumbent Sanjay Arora was appointed Delhi Police Commissioner in August 2022.

  • The Centre appointed former Air Chief Marshal (Retd) Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria as Chief Nodal Officer for the UPDIC project. The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) is a project under the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA).
  • The project is expected to reduce foreign dependency of the Indian aerospace and defence sector.
  • Bhadauria has over four decades of experience with defence services.

India Signs deal with Armenia for Export of Missiles, Weapon Systems

  • After clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijan troops, India would export missiles, rockets and ammunition, including indigenous Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers, to Armenia to help defend the nation against the neighbour Azerbaijan.
  • India signed an order for the arms export through a government-to-government route, through which the two nations inked contracts for the supply of arms and ammunition to Armenia.
  • This development came in a bid to push the government's efforts to increase weapons exports, with policy reforms and active support of the government to secure overseas orders.

Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) Named India's New Chief of Defence Staff

  • Lt Gen Anil Chauhan (retd), a former eastern Army Commander and Director General of military operations, was appointed as India's new Chief of Defence Staff, more than nine months after the post fell vacant following the death of Gen Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash.
  • He was the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Army during the Balakot air strikes in 2019 when Indian airplanes pounded a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp deep inside Pakistan in response to the Pulwama terror strike.
  • Lt Gen Chauhan (retd) will assume the rank of the four-star General once he takes charge as India's second Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He will be the first retired three-star officer to return to service in four-star rank.
  • After his retirement as the eastern Army Commander last year, he has been serving as the military adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat headed by NSA Ajit Doval.

Swedish Weapons Giant Saab to Build Carl-Gustaf M4 Rocket Launcher in India

  • The facility will be the firm's first manufacturing facility for the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon system outside Sweden. Saab is currently in talks with the army to take the proposal forward. The Carl-Gustaf weapon system has been in service with the Indian Army since 1976, and its earlier M2 and M3 variants have been licence-produced in India.

DRDO Conducts Successful Test Flight of (VSHORADS) Missile

  • The DRDO successfully flight tested the Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile.
  • The VSHORADS is an air defence system designed and developed indigenously by Hyderabad-based Research Centre Imarat of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • The DRDO conducted two successful test flight of the Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile from a ground based portable launcher at the integrated test range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
