U.S. Threatens Escalation with Iran at IAEA Next Month

  • The United States threatened to confront Iran at the International Atomic Energy Agency next month if it does not cooperate more with the watchdog - an escalation that could undermine talks on reviving a 2015 big-power deal with Iran.
  • Tehran is locked in several standoffs with the IAEA, whose 35-nation Board of Governors is holding a quarterly meeting.
  • Iran is denying the IAEA access to re-install surveillance cameras at a workshop at the TESA Karaj complex. The IAEA also wants answers on the origin of uranium particles found at apparently old but undeclared sites, and says Iran keeps subjecting its inspectors to excessively invasive physical searches.

RBI Imposes Penalties on Tata Communications Payment Solutions, Appnit

  • The Reserve Bank has imposed penalties on Tata Communications Payment Solutions Limited (TCPSL) and Appnit Technologies Private Limited (ATPL) for deficiencies in regulatory compliance.
  • A penalty of Rs. 2 crore wasn imposed on TCPSL and Rs. 54.93 lakh on ATPL.

JM Financial Launches, a Retail Bond Platform

  • JM Financial Products, the flagship non-banking finance arm of the JM Financial Group announced the launch of, a digital application that would enable retail investors to trade or invest in fixed income securities including corporate bonds, a facility similar to the RBI's retail direct platform for government bonds.
  • features diverse fixed income investment options across rating categories, yields and instrument types such as plain vanilla bonds, sub-debt/ Tier II & perpetual bonds aided by in-house analytics and data driven technology platform.

SBI signed an MoU with Pondicherry Co-op Milk Producers' Union Ltd

  • The State bank of India (SBI) signed an MoU with Pondicherry Co-op. Milk Producers' Union Ltd (PONLAIT) for financing individual dairy farmers up to Rs. 3 Lakh. The Loan will be made available through YONO application of the SBI Bank. SBI has introduced a technology product, named 'SAFAL- Simple And Fast Agriculture Loan' for financing individual Dairy farmers, who are supplying milk to commercial dairies on a regular basis.
  • Around 3,500 dairy farmers supplying milk to 98 primary milk societies of PONLAIT would be benefited by the arrangement. This was the first MoU signed in the Chennai circle of the bank which plans to enter into such agreements with commercial dairies throughout the country to finance farmers supplying milk to the dairies. The present arrangement to boost milk production with the help of bank loans would help the administration of the union territory to meet the daily requirement of milk.

K2 Mission Discovers 366 New Exoplanet Candidates

  • Using photometric data from NASA's Kepler/K2 mission, astronomers have identified 747 unique planet candidates and 57 multiplanet systems; of these candidates, 366 have not been previously identified, including one multiplanet system and one system with two short-period gas giants.

Pat Cummins is Australia's Test Captain

  • Pat Cummins was confirmed as Australia's 47th Test captain, with former skipper Steve Smith his deputy, as Australia's Test team breaks new ground ahead of the Ashes 2021 next month. After an interview process and ratification from the full board of Cricket Australia, Cummins became the first fast bowler to be a full-time skipper of the Australian Test team, and the first bowler of any kind to captain the team since Richie Benaud.

ICCR Event to Celebrate 75 Years of Indian Democracy

  • The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) organised a week-long event titled "Next Generation Democracy" to celebrate 75 years of Indian democracy.
  • The ICCR invited leaders under 35 from 75 democratic countries to India to see the functioning of Indian democracy. The inaugural batch included 60 delegations from 60 countries such as Bhutan, Sweden, Jamaica, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Poland, Uzbekistan, and Malaysia. Fifteen delegates from 15 global forums like World Bank, UN-Habitat, Asean were also invited.
  • The week-long event for the international delegates included information and knowledge sharing, seminars, visits to government institutions, and select Indian cities to demonstrate India's democratic journey.
  • The ICCR is an autonomous body under the external affairs ministry and deals with policies relating to cultural relations.

'Dosti': Trilateral Coast Guard Exercise by India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka

  • India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka held the 15th edition of the biennial trilateral coast guard exercise 'Dosti', in the Maldives.
  • Year 2021 marked the 30th year of Dosti Trilateral Coast Guard Exercise.
  • During the five-day exercise, Indian Coast Guard vessels namely ICGS Apoorva & ICGS Vajra joined Sri Lanka Coast Guard vessel named SLCGS Suraksha.
  • The tri-lateral exercise 'Dosti' was organised with the aim to further fortify the friendship, to build cooperation between Coast guards of three countries and to enhance mutual operational capability & exercise interoperability. This exercise is significant for India because Maldives & Sri Lanka are of strategic importance to India & its maritime security interests.
  • The Dosti Coast Guard Exercise was first launched in 1991. These exercises were bilateral earlier, involving Indian coast guard and Maldives Coast Guards. Sri Lanka joined these exercises in 2012 for the first time. Since then, it has become trilateral exercise.

  • The oldest person on the earth, Francisca Susano, who was born in the 19th century passed away in the Philippines' Negros Occidental province.
  • Francisca Susano or 'Lola' was 124 years old which makes her the oldest person in the world breaking the record of France's Jeanne Calment, who attained the age of 122.
  • Her official declaration as the oldest person in the world at 124 years old is currently validated by the Guinness World Records.

Nirmala Sitharaman launched Tejasvini & Hausala schemes

  • Union Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman launched two schemes named 'Tejasvini & Hausala schemes' of J&K Bank for girls. Under 18-35 years of age to start their businesses and 'Shikhar & Shikara' schemes of Punjab National Bank (PNB) for development of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
  • Tejaswini Scheme is in the course of the credit score outreach programme in Jammu. The scheme goals to offer monetary help as much as Rs. 5 lakh to younger ladies for establishing gainful self-employment ventures, suited to their expertise, aptitude & native situations. Tejasvini scheme focuses on offering monetary help of Rs. 5 lakh to ladies between 18-35 years for beginning their enterprise.
  • Shikhar scheme focuses on meeting credit requirements up to INR 2 crore for the hotel, tour & tourism industry.
  • 'Shikara' which goals to supply finance for the acquisition of the latest shikara and restore & upkeep of shikara and houseboats by means of collateral-free time period loans with handy reimbursement beneath EMI mode in seven years. Shikara scheme will prove credit up to INR 15 lakh for purchase/repair of Shikaras is provided in Kashmir valley.

Bengal Govt. Partners with Edtech Start-up to Drive Digital Learning

  • The West Bengal government and an Edtech start-up announced a strategic partnership to drive digital learning and career development programmes across the state.
  • The partnership with the start-up, Schoolnet, will help provide an online e-learning platform in Bengali, Geneo eSekha', to students from classes 5 to 10.
  • The pupils of state-run and government-aided schools will be able to access the portal through the official website of West Bengal's School Education Department.
  • In addition, Schoolnet will be providing a multi-lingual career guidance portal to the School Education Department especially for students from Classes 9 to 12 for future career advancement.

Ancient Roman Villa with Magnificent Mosaic Unearthed in UK

  • The 1,700-year-old mosaic, part of the ruins of the ancient Roman villa complex in Rutland, England, is the first example in the UK displaying scenes from Homer's The Iliad, and one of only a handful from across Europe.
  • The ancient Roman villa complex was discovered beneath a farmer's field.
  • The ancient complex is surrounded by a range of other buildings and features revealed by a geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation, including what appear to be aisled barns, circular structures and a possible bath house, all within a series of boundary ditches.
  • The remains of the mosaic depict part of the story of the Greek hero Achilles.
