Belgium Becomes First Country to Make Quarantine Compulsory for Monkeypox Patients

  • Belgium became the first country to make a 21-day quarantine compulsory for monkeypox patients after four cases of the disease were reported. The Belgian health authorities took this decision, Saudi Gazette reported citing Belgian media. The Belgian Institute of Tropical Medicine has said that the risk of a larger outbreak in the country is low.
  • Monkeypox is a disease in the same family as smallpox and symptoms include a distinct bumpy rash, a fever, sore muscles, and a headache. Monkeypox is less deadly than smallpox, with a mortality rate below four per cent, but experts are worried about the unusual spread of the disease beyond Africa where it usually circulates.

Manish Sisodia to Present Delhi Education Model at Education World Forum 2022 in London

  • Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia presented the 'Delhi Education Model' at the Education World Forum 2022 in London.
  • The Education World Forum is one of the largest events where education and skills ministers gather from different parts of the country to discuss key issues and problems they face in the education sector. This platform is also used to share solutions, new and creative ideas and share their learnings with one another.
  • Theme for Education World Forum 2022 was 'Education: building forward together; stronger, bolder, better'.

CUET 2022: Central Universities from the North Eastern States Exempted

  • The Union Education Minister made a major announcement for the candidates and the universities regarding the CUET 2022. The central Universities in the North Eastern States and Uttarakhand were exempted from the CUET 2022 norms. The official statement issued by the Ministry stated that "Considering the operational difficulties in conducting the exam of CUET 2022, i.e. the issue of geographical conditions, hilly terrain, far-flung location, limited digital connectivity, infrastructure, etc. It has been decided that central Universities of North Eastern Regions namely Sikkim University, Rajiv Gandhi University, Manipur University, Assam University, Nagaland University, Tripura University, Mizoram University, NEHU as well HNB Garhwal University, Uttarakhand may take admission in the affiliated colleges to the central Universities as per the past practice instead of CUET for the year 2022-23 only."

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Inaugurates North East Research Conclave 2022 at IIT ...

  • Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister for Education and Skill Development, launched the North East Research Conclave (NERC) 2022 at IIT Guwahati. Pradhan stated that the conclave would enhance the ties between industry, academics, and policymakers, as well as re-energize the research, start-up, and entrepreneurial ecosystems in the resource-rich Northeastern Region states and the country.
  • The inauguration of the conclave was followed by the signing of an agreement between IIT Guwahati and the Government of Assam to establish 'The Assam Advanced Health Innovation Institute (AAHII).
  • This will be a unique partnership between the Government of Assam and IIT Guwahati to set up a Research Institution to leverage advanced technologies to transform medical science. The joint venture company will invite participation from intending parties including corporates/ business houses/research institutions and philanthropic organisations

CUET for PG Admissions from 2022 Academic Session: UGC Chairman

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) decided to introduce the common university entrance test (CUET) for post graduate courses also from 2022. The decision comes weeks after the UGC chief announced that CUET scores, and not Class 12 scores, will be mandatory for admission to 45 central universities and that the central universities can fix their minimum eligibility criteria.
  • The exam will be conducted in English and Hindi in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. Over 10.46 lakh candidates registered for CUET-UG so far. The last date for registration for CUET-UG is May 22.

Prof. Nilofar Khan Appointed as First Woman V-C of Kashmir University

  • Professor Nilofar Khan, who has 30 years of teaching experience,was appointed as the first woman vice-chancellor of the University of Kashmir. The order of appointment was issued by Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha in his capacity of being the chancellor of the university. She replaced Professor Talat Ahmad, who completed his second tenure as the V-C of the university which began in August 2018.
  • Professor Khan, who had the distinction of being the first woman to be appointed as Dean Student Welfare at the university, was appointed as vice-chancellor for a three-year term.
