Israel Spared Fifth Snap Election as Lawmakers Pass National Budget

  • Israel's Parliament passed a national budget for the first time in three years, avoiding a November deadline that would have brought down the new government and triggered another election.
  • The marathon overnight voting on budget bills in the Knesset, Israel's Parliament, was a major hurdle for the new government headed by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, whose fractious coalition holds a narrow majority.

Hindalco Industries Acquires Ryker Base

  • Hindalco Industries Limited aquired Ryker Base Pvt Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Polycab India Limited, for an enterprise value of Rs. 323 crore.
  • The acquisition will be through Hindalco's wholly-owned subsidiary Renuka Investments & Finance Ltd, with a purchase consideration for 100 percent equity stake, subject to customary adjustments for working capital and net debt as on the date of closing.
  • The acquisition will strengthen Hindalco's copper rod manufacturing capacity by providing a time-to-market advantage, allowing the Company to cater to the growing demand from electrical and electronics sectors.

Nigeria One Step Closer to Mobile Money Rollout

  • Mobile phone operators MTN and Airtel have both received partial approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria to operate mobile payments in the country.
  • This comes three years after the CBN initially said that it would allow non-financial companies to apply for mobile banking licences.
  • A final approval which is subject to the fulfilment of certain conditions will be issued to the Telcos within six months.
  • Under the guidelines, mobile network operators are allowed to provide financial services to millions of unbanked Nigerians. However, they can do so only as Payment Service Banks (PSBs) and through a subsidiary separate from their core operations.
  • PSBs accept deposits from individuals and small businesses, offer payment and remittance services, and other activities prescribed by the central bank.
  • This could make a huge difference for Nigeria's 38 million unbanked adults - about 36% of the total adult population in the country.

BSE Joins Hand with HDFC Bank to Promote Start-up, SME Listing

  • Leading stock exchange BSE collaborated with private sector lender HDFC Bank to further encourage and promote the listing of start-ups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across India.
  • Through this pact, HDFC Bank and BSE will evaluate banking and lending solutions for start-ups, undergoing listing process on start-ups and SME platform.
  • Both the parties have agreed to conduct and participate in joint outreach activities and contribute to each other's publications on the start-up ecosystem in India.
  • BSE became the first stock exchange to get approval from markets regulator SEBI and had launched its SME platform in March 2012.

DoT Forms Innovation Group for 6G Technology

  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) formed a technology innovation group on the next frontier, the sixth generation (6G), hoping to take the lead in the development of the technology globally.
  • Telecom secretary K. Rajaraman was named chairperson and the forum aims to create vision and objectives as well as develop a roadmap for research and development (R&D), pre-standardisation, development of applications and products, and action plans for 6G technology.
  • The 22-member group includes additional secretary Anita Praveen, member (Technology) Ashok Kumar Tiwari, member (Services) Deepak Chaturvedi, executive director Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) Rajkumar Upadhyay in addition to directors of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) of Chennai, Delhi, Kanpur, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, as well as industry body Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) chairman Ajai Puri who is also the chief operating officer (India and South Asia) of Bharti Airtel.

China Launches Earth Science Satellite

  • China sent an Earth science satellite into space from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in the northern Shanxi Province.
  • The satellite, called Guangmu, was launched by a Long March-6 carrier rocket and entered the planned orbit.
  • It was the 395th flight mission of the Long March rocket series.
  • Developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the satellite (SDGSAT-1) is the world's first space science satellite dedicated to serving the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Akash Ends with Bronze Medal at World Boxing Championships

  • Debutant Akash Kumar (54 kg) signed off with a bronze medal in the AIBA Men's World Boxing Championships after being bested by Kazakh teenager Makhmud Sabyrkhan in the semi-finals.
  • Akash lost 0-5 to end India's campaign in the marquee competition, where Akash became only the seventh Indian male boxer to secure a medal. He also claimed a prize money of USD 25,000.

India, Bhutan to Have 7 more Entry/Exit Points for Trade

  • India and Bhutan will have seven additional entry and exit points for trade as part of measures to increase trade connectivity.
  • The decision was taken at a commerce secretary-level meeting held between India and Bhutan on trade and transit issues here.
  • The Indian delegation was led by BVR Subrahmanyam, Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Bhutanese delegation was led by Dasho Karma Tshering, Secretary, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan.

Meghalaya Cabinet Approves Creation of Eastern West Khasi Hills District

  • The Meghalaya Cabinet approved a proposal to upgrade the Mairang civil sub-division to a full-fledged district.
  • It will be called Eastern West Khasi Hills district.
  • Mairang is now a sub-division under West Khasi Hills district.
  • Proposal to upgrade the Mairang Civil Sub-Division to a full-fledged district has been approved by the Cabinet. The new district will be named Eastern West Khasi Hills and will be inaugurated on 10th Nov 2021.
  • Creation of the new district will ensure that administration will remain closer to the people besides implementation of various schemes will also be more effective.

Japan, Germany Expand Military Ties

  • Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said that Japan will step up military cooperation with Germany in the Indo-Pacific region as he welcomed a port call by the first German warship to visit Japan in about 20 years.
  • The frigate Bayern is visiting Tokyo after two days of joint exercises with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer Samidare in the Pacific Ocean amid increasingly assertive maritime activities by China in the region.
  • The ship's visit is "an important turning point" in pursuing a "free and open Indo-Pacific" and secure one of the world's most important shipping lanes, Kishi said after inspecting the frigate with German officials.

Indian Navy's Goa Maritime Conclave

  • India played host to the Navy chiefs of 12 nations from the Indian Ocean Region at the annual maritime conclave 2021. The third edition of the Goa Maritime Conclave (GMC-21) included a three-day-long conclave on building working-level deliberations that took place earlier in the year during the Goa Maritime Symposium-21 in May.
  • The Navy chose 'maritime security' as the official theme for the GMC 21. The theme focused on 'Maritime security and emerging non-traditional threats: A case for a proactive role for IOR navies', derived keeping in mind the necessity of 'winning everyday peace' in the maritime domain.

National Cancer Awareness Day

  • November 7 is observed annually as National Cancer Awareness Day in India to raise awareness about cancer, of which 1.1 million cases are reported in the country each year. National Cancer Awareness Day was first announced in September 2014 by then Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, with November 7 chosen for the occasion to coincide with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Marie Curie, who was born on this date in 1867, and whose works led to the development of radiotherapy to treat cancer.
  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is a leading cause of death globally, accounting for nearly 10 million fatalities in 2020. Cancer in lungs, colon and rectum, liver, stomach and breast, respectively, was the most common cause of death due to the disease, last year.

Ayodhya's 'Deepotsav' Enters Guinness World Records

  • Uttar Pradesh's Department of Tourism and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University jointly entered in Guinness World Records for the largest display of oil lamps during Deepotsava at Ram ki Paidi ghats in Ayodhya.
  • "Today we have lit up 9 lakh earthen lamps. I want to extend my greetings to everyone on this Deepotsav program," Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said at an event of Deepotsava celebrations in Ayodhya.
  • The 'Deepotsav' celebrations in Ayodhya last year had set the Guinness World records for 'the largest display of oil lamps' after 5,84,572 earthen lamps were lit on the banks of River Saryu.

Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana

  • Under "Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana, around 15,000 students have enrolled for coaching classes in the year 2021.
  • This scheme was launched by Delhi Government. It was launched for various competitive exams at some private centres.
  • It covers children belonging to economically poor background and marginalised communities.
  • Besides free coaching, students will also be provided travel stipend amount of Rs 2,500 by Delhi government.
  • Under it, bright students belonging to SC, ST, OBC and EWS categories are given free coaching for competitive exams, from private coaching centres.
  • Family whose earnings are less than Rs.8 lakh per annum can avail the benefits of the scheme.

IIT-Bombay Best Institute in India, Chinese Universities Dominate QS Asia Rankings 2022

  • As many as 118 Indian universities figured in the QS World University rankings Asia 2022. Five Indian Institutes of Technology along with IISc and Delhi University entered the prestigious group of the top 100 institutes in Asia. IIT-Bombay grabs the 42nd position followed by IIT Delhi (45) and IIT Madras (54).
  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore is placed at the 56th spot followed by IIT Kharagpur (60), IIT Kanpur (64), and University of Delhi (77), as per the data released today by QS.
  • In the top 10, five universities are from China. The National University of Singapore has secured the first position followed by Peking University at the second place and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) at the third position.
  • The QS Asia University Rankings highlight the top universities in Asia each year. The rankings are based on 11 indicators which include academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, international research network among others.
