Antonio Guterres Re-elected as UN Secretary General for Five Years
UN General Assembly appointed Antonio Guterres as the UN Secretary General for a second term beginning January 1, 2022, days after the powerful Security Council had unanimously recommended his name to the 193-member body for re-election.
President of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly Volkan Bozkir announced that Guterres has been appointed by acclamation Secretary General of the United Nations for the second term of office beginning on January 1, 2022 and ending on December 31, 2026.
Bozkir then administered the oath of office to 72-year-old Guterres at the podium of the UN General Assembly hall.
India and US Launch a Hydrogen Task Force in Clean Energy Push
The United States Department of Energy (DOE), India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the US India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) have jointly launched a US-India Hydrogen Task Force. This is under the US-India Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP).
India and US had decided to revamp their strategic partnership to focus on clean energy sectors such as biofuels and hydrogen after the Joe Biden administration took charge. In March this year, the two countries said they will intensify efforts to take advantage of advanced U.S. technologies and India's rapidly growing energy market.
LIC CSL Launches Prepaid Gift Card in Collaboration with IDBI Bank
LIC Cards Services (LIC CSL) has launched a contactless prepaid gift card, 'Shagun', in collaboration with IDBI Bank on the RuPay platform. The purpose of this card is to expand the gift card market with an intent to promote cashless ways of gifting and present a wide range of end-use choices and in a future foray into the market of e-gift cards. NPCI partnered with LIC CSL & IDBI Bank for the launch of the Shagun Gift Card on RuPay network.
Shagun card, in the initial phase, will be available to LIC and its subsidiaries for official use. The card will be used to facilitate awards and special rewards during official conferences and functions.
The Shagun gift card offers customisation in the form of flexible loading of any amount ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 10,000. With this card, the customer can perform multiple transactions within the validity of 3 years.
They can also use it to shop online, pay utility bills, book tickets for air, rail, bus, and so on through various mobile wallets and E-commerce portals or apps using this card. The contactless (tap & go) feature of the card is aimed at transforming the transaction experience for users.
ADB and Government of India Sign Loan Agreement
The Government of India has signed a $484 million loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank to improve transport connectivity and facilitate industrial development in the Chennai–Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor (CKIC) in Tamil Nadu.
The CKIC is part of India's East Coast Economic Corridor (ECEC), which stretches from West Bengal to Tamil Nadu and connects India to the production networks of South, South-east, and East Asia. ADB is the lead partner of the Government of India in developing ECEC.
The agreement was signed by Rajat Kumar Mishra, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs for the Tamil Nadu Industrial Connectivity Project on behalf of the Government of India and Takeo Konishi, Country Director – India, ADB.
Decks Cleared for Takeover of Crisis-ridden PMC Bank
Paving the way for takeover of crisis-ridden Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank (PMC), the RBI granted in-principle approval to the Centrum Financial Services to set up a small finance bank. Centrum Financial Services was one of the applicants for takeover of the PMC Bank.
The PMC Bank had invited Expression of Interest (EoI) from eligible investors for investment/equity participation for its reconstruction and had received four proposals. In September 2019, the RBI had superseded the PMC Board and placed it under regulatory curbs.
Philip C. Tocher Joins Andhra Pradesh Ruling Party YSRCP
Former Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Christian minority leader Philip C. Tocher has joined Andhra Pradesh's ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP).
Tocher joined YSRCP in the presence of party founder and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy at his camp office.
Back in January, Tocher resigned from the TDP, accusing party supremo Nara Chandrababu Naidu for his remarks on the Christian community.
He was with TDP since its inception in 1983 and went on to be nominated as the Anglo-Indian MLA during the TDP regime from 2014 to 2019.
India and Pakistan NSAs to be in Tajikistan Next Week for SCO Meeting
India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Pakistani NSA Moeed Yusuf will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meet next week in Dushanbe (Tajikistan).
The in-person meeting along with the NSAs of other countries is slated for June 23 and 24.
The development comes at a time when both New Delhi and Islamabad have been cautious in ties in the last few months. This year in February, the Indian and Pakistan army had agreed to observe the 2003 ceasefire pact at the Line of Control (LOC) in Kashmir. Since then, the pact has stood and the area hasn't seen any firing.
India and three European nations began a two-day high-voltage naval war-game in the Gulf of Aden with a larger aim of improving operational interoperability and promote, peace, security and stability in the key waterways. Five warships from the four navies are participating in the 'EUNAVFOR' joint naval exercise featuring advanced air defence and anti-submarine drills, cross deck helicopter operations, tactical manoeuvres and search and rescue missions.
European Union Naval Force Somalia (EUNAVFOR) is the EU's counter-piracy mission off the coast of Somalia.
The Indian Navy has deployed its warship INS Trikand for the exercise. The other warships are Italian Navy ship ITS Carabinere, Spanish ship ESPS Navarra, and two French Navy ships FS Tonnerre and FS Surcouf.

Milkha Singh Passes Away
Legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh, popularly known as 'Flying Sikh', passed away in a local hospital in Chandigarh.
The legendary athlete was a four-time Asian Games gold medallist and 1958 Commonwealth Games champion. His greatest performance remained the fourth-place finish in the 400m final of the 1960 Rome Olympics. He represented India in the 1956 and 1964 Olympics and was bestowed the Padma Shri in 1959.
June 19th was officially designated as World Sickle Cell Awareness Day. The international awareness day is observed annually with the goal to increase public knowledge and an understanding of sickle cell disease, and the challenges experienced by patients and their families and caregivers.
World Sauntering Day
World Sauntering Day is celebrated on June 19 every year. The purpose is to remind people to slow down and enjoy life as opposed to rushing through it. It is also sometimes referred to as International Sauntering Day.
The holiday was created in 1979 by W.T. Rabe in response to the growing popularity of jogging. It is believed to have begun at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan, USA The idea behind the day was to encourage people to slow down and appreciate the world around them.
National Reading Day
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) celebrates National Reading Day annually on 19 June. The Day is celebrated to honour the father of the 'Library Movement in Kerala', the late P.N. Panicker, whose death anniversary falls on June 19. In 2021, 26th National Reading Day is being celebrated. The week following June 19 will be observed as Reading Week and the entire month till July 18 will be observed as Reading Month.
The first Reading Day celebration was held in 1996. On June 19, 2017, Prime Minister launched the 22nd National Reading Month Celebrations and called for unity to spread the message of 'Read and Grow' among all the citizens of the country by 2022.
Environmental Organisation 'Familial Forestry' Wins Prestigious UN Award
The 2021 Land for Life Award has been won by Familial Forestry of Rajasthan, a unique concept that relates a tree with a family, making it a green "family member." The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) organises the Land for Life Award every two years to recognize excellence and innovation in efforts towards land in balance.
The theme for the 2021 Award is "Healthy Land, Healthy Lives". The Land for Life Award was launched at the UNCCD COP (Conference of Parties) 10 in 2011 and is considered as the world's highest reward regarding land conservation and restoration.

QCI Launches Indian Certification of Medical Devices Plus Scheme
Quality Council of India (QCI) and Association of Indian Manufacturers of Medical Devices (AiMeD) have launched "Indian Certification of Medical Devices Plus (ICMED) Scheme".
ICMED scheme added further features to the ICMED Scheme that was launched in 2016 for Certification of Medical Devices.
This scheme will undertake verification of quality, safety and efficacy of medical devices.
Scheme has been designed to integrate Quality Management System components and product related quality validation processes by witness testing of products with respect to the defined product standards and specifications.
This is the first such scheme across the world in which quality management systems & product certification standards are integrated with regulatory requirements.
It will be an end-to-end quality assurance scheme for medical devices sector in India and much-needed institutional mechanism to assure the product quality and safety.
QCI was set up in 1997 as public private partnership model based on the model existing in Netherlands. QCI was organised as an independent autonomous body which worked for assuring quality standards across all spheres of economic and social activities. It was established under Societies Registration Act in 1997 to provide accreditation services across different sectors for product, services and persons.
XLRI among Top Global Business Schools in Positive Impact Rankings
The 2021 edition of the Positive Impact Rating for business schools, or PIR, which was launched at the United Nations PRME Global Forum, featured three business schools from India, all of them in the top tier.

Farmer Discovers 2,600-year-old Stone Slab from Egyptian Pharaoh
A farmer in Egypt has uncovered a 2,600-year-old stela erected by pharaoh Apries, who ruled from about 589 B.C., to 570 B.C.
The stela is 91 inches (230 centimeters) long, 41 inches (103 cm) wide and 18 inches (45 cm) thick.
At the top of the stela is a carving of a winged sun disk (a disk that was sometimes associated with the sun god Ra) with a cartouche of pharaoh Apries, with 15 lines of hieroglyphic writing below that. Apries, also known as Wahibre Haaibre, reigned during the 26th dynasty of Egypt (688 B.C. to –525 B.C.), a time when Egypt was independent and its capital was often located at Sais in northern Egypt.
