Electric Boat Pilot Project Launched on the Ganga at Varanasi

An electric boat pilot project was launched on the Ganga River in Varanasi in July 2026. Five passenger boats fitted with electric motors and lithium battery packs were flagged off from Namo Ghat. The initiative is a joint effort of the Varanasi Development Authority and GAIL (India) Limited. Killai becomes Tamil Nadu’s first fully operational Climate Resilient Village

Killai in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district has become the state’s first fully operational Climate Resilient Village, rolled out under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission in July 2026. The project integrates ecosystem restoration, renewable energy use and community-led climate adaptation measures to strengthen local capacity against environmental challenges. Activities include mangrove restoration, solar microgrids and training for climate risk management. By linking local governance with scientific planning, the village aims to serve as a model for nearby communities and reinforce state-level resilience strategies. This marks a tangible step in India’s broader climate adaptation efforts.

2nd Bharat Green Hydrogen Summit 2026 held in New Delhi

New Delhi hosted the 2nd Bharat Green Hydrogen Summit 2026 on 23 July 2026, organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) alongside the International Solar Alliance Assembly and the International Conference on Green Hydrogen. The event focused on hydrogen production, clean mobility, domestic manufacturing, and export competitiveness. The central theme was ‘Positioning India as a Global Hydrogen Hub.’ Government and industry leaders discussed policies under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, public‑private partnerships, investment needs, and supply chain development to advance India’s role in the global hydrogen economy.

Indian Railways electrification reaches 99.6% of broad-gauge network

As of July 2026, Indian Railways had electrified about 99.6 percent of its broad-gauge network, placing the country second among large railway systems behind Switzerland. Between 2014 and 2026, roughly 48,072 route kilometres were electrified. The achievement supports India’s climate and mobility goals by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and enabling faster, more reliable services. Ongoing electrification work continues on remaining sections and in freight corridors to further enhance railway efficiency and sustainability across passenger and goods networks.
