India and US Agree to Work Closely at UN Security Council

  • India and the US held consultations on issues related to the UN Security Council and agreed to work closely during India's upcoming term as a non-permanent member of UNSC during 2021-22.
  • Both sides held a wide-ranging discussion on issues on UN Security Council agenda and recent developments. They agreed to work closely together during India's upcoming term as a non-permanent member of UNSC during 2021-22.
  • The two countries also agreed to work closely together given their shared values of democracy, pluralism and rule-based international order. 

UK's Labour Party Suspends Former leader Jeremy Corbyn

  • The UK's Opposition Labour Party suspended former leader Jeremy Corbyn from its ranks after a report by the country's human rights watchdog held the party responsible for unlawful acts of harassment and discrimination during his time in charge.
  • The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), which had launched an investigation into antisemitism within the party following a string of complaints, found that Labour had broken the law in its failure to handle antisemitism, or anti-Jewish, complaints and there were serious failings by its leadership at the time.

  • Two prominent Indian-Americans are among Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden's core advisers who have been guiding him on issues ranging from the coronavirus pandemic, economic recovery to foreign policy and climate change.
  • Among those advising him on the pandemic are Dr. Vivek Murthy, former US Surgeon General who was appointed by President Barack Obama and Harvard economist Raj Chetty is among those who have briefed Biden on economic issues.

Output of Eight Core Industries Contracts for Seventh Consecutive Month

  • Production of eight core sectors contracted for the seventh consecutive month in September. Data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry shows that the output of India's eight core infrastructure sectors dropped by 0.8 per cent.
  • In September 2019, the production of eight core sectors had contracted by 5.1 per cent. This time around, the contraction has been attributed mainly to a decline in the production of crude oil, natural gas, refinery products and cement.
  • Data released by the central government indicates that the decline in output in September of this year was the lowest since March 2020.
  • All sectors, namely crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizer and cement recorded negative growth in September 2020 with the exception of coal, electricity and steel.
  • The output of the eight core sectors had dropped by 14.9 per cent in April-September of this year. In 2019, the core sectors had witnessed a growth of 1.3 per cent in the same period.

Union Cabinet Approves Mechanism for Procurement of Ethanol

  • The Union Cabinet approved the Mechanism for the public sector oil companies to procure ethanol.
  • Under the new mechanism, the prices of ethanol obtained from sugarcane based raw material have been increased for the forth coming sugar cane season. This is between December 2020 and November 2021.
  • Also, the prices of ethanol obtained from C heavy molasses, B heavy molasses have been increased. The increase in price was around Rs. 2 to 3 per litre. Additionally, the oil companies will now have to pay transportation charges and GST while procuring ethanol.
  • The Oil Marketing Companies were selling petrol blended with ethanol under Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme. This was applied to the whole of India except Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands.
  • This was to reduce the energy dependence of India from oil imports and also to boost agriculture. Also, Ethanol Procurement Policy was adopted under the EBP programme.

Government Allows Exports under New Scheme to Boost API Production

  • The government has tweaked the newly proposed production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for bulk drugs to extend the incentives to exports of the products and ease other norms such as minimum investment threshold.
  • The pharmaceuticals department (DoP) announced amendments to PLI scheme for promotion of domestic manufacturing of critical key starting materials (KSMs), drug intermediates (DIs) and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in India and PLI scheme for promoting domestic manufacturing of medical devices based on suggestions and inputs from the pharmaceutical and medical device industry.
  • Aimed at reducing dependence on China for APIs and KSM, the scheme for bulk drugs was initially meant to cater to only the domestic demand.

SpaceX Replaces 2 Rocket engines ahead of next Crewed Mission

  • Elon Musk-run SpaceX is replacing two engines on its Falcon 9 rocket which is scheduled to launch four space travelers to the International Space Station on November 14.
  • The requirement of replacing the engines became apparent after an investigation into the aberrant behaviour of the Falcon 9 rocket observed during a recent non-NASA mission launch attempt.
  • The non-NASA mission referred to the launch attempt of a GPS satellite for the US Space Force earlier this month, which was aborted automatically moments before the lit off.
  • This led NASA and SpaceX to delay the launch of Crew-1 mission, which is also scheduled to launch on a Falcon 9 rocket -- which was originally scheduled for launch on October 31.

Sharan and Bopanna Out of Astana Open

  • Divij Sharan and Rohan Bopanna's campaign at the Astana Open ended with defeats in the quarter-finals and round of 16 respectively at the National Tennis Centre.
  • Sharan and his British partner Luke Bambridge lost 3-6, 5-7 to Australian Open runners-up Max Purcell and Luke Saville.
  • Rohan Bopanna and his Danish Partner Frederick Nielsen went down to Marcelo Arevalo of Uruguay and Tomislav Brkic of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

India's Concern over Depiction of Jammu and Kashmir in Bank Note

  • India conveyed its serious concern to Saudi Arabia over the incorrect depiction of the country's borders on a new Saudi currency note, which shows almost the whole of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir as a separate entity.
  • The twenty-riyal bank note was issued by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority earlier this month to commemorate the country's presidency of the G20 ahead of the grouping's virtual summit during November 21-22.
  • The Indian Government has asked the Saudi side to take urgent corrective steps in this regard.
  • The Saudi bank note has also irked Pakistan because it depicts Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Gilgit-Baltistan as part of the separate entity. One side of the note features Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and the G20 logo while the other features a world map showing the members of the G20 in a darker shade.

Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project Gets Approval

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi approved the Phase II and Phase III Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP). These two phases are to be implemented with financial assistance from the World Bank and AIIB (Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank).
  • The overall cost of the project is Rs. 10,211 crore. It is to be implemented in 10 years duration. The external funding of the project is Rs. 7,000 crore. The rest of Rs. 3,211 crore is to come from the implementing agencies. The Government of India is to contribute Rs. 1.024 crore.
  • These phases aim to improve safety and performance of dams. Also, it aims to strengthen dam safety institutional setup. Also, the project will explore alternative incidental means to generate incidental revenue at selected dams. The revenue will then be used for sustainable operation and maintenance of the dams.
  • The project originally aimed to improve 223 dams in India. Later the count was increased. More than 80% of dams in India are 25 years old. 

MoU Signed Between India and Cambodia Gets Approval

  • The union cabinet approved the Memorandum of Understanding signed between India and Cambodia on cooperation in the field of medicine and health.
  • The MoU will increase the cooperation between the countries through joint initiatives and technological developments in health sector. It will also strengthen bilateral ties between the countries.
  • The main areas of cooperation included in the MoU are family planning, mother and child health, technology transfer, HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis, Epidemiology and Public Health, Disease Control, medical education, training in clinical, management skill and para-clinical, health manpower development and drugs and pharmaceuticals.

United States Offers India F-18 Naval Fighter Jets

  • Seeking to develop further closer ties with India, the United States of America has offered its F-18 naval fighter jets for the Indian Navy's requirements of combat jets for its aircraft carriers.
  • The Indian Navy had a few years ago expressed interest in the acquisition of 57 naval fighter aircraft for operations from its aircraft carriers including the present INS Vikramaditya and the under-construction Indigenous aircraft carrier.
  • The American Government has offered to provide their naval fighter aircraft F-18 for the Indian Navy under a government proposal at the meeting between defence delegations of both countries during the 2+2 meetings.
  • The aircraft offered by the American government is said to be the advanced version of the plane which was on offer to the Indian Air Force for its requirement of 126 Multirole Medium Combat Aircraft in which only Rafale and European Eurofighter had been able to meet the qualitative requirements and finally the French plane had been selected.

Former Gujarat CM Keshubhai Patel Passes Away

  • Former Gujarat Chief Minister and senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party Keshubhai Patel passed away at the age of 92.
  • Keshubhai was the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 1995 and from 1998 to 2001. Later, he was succeeded by the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the then Gujarat Chief Minister.
  • The BJP leader had been nominated as a member of Gujarat Legislative Assembly six times. He had been a member of the BJP since the 1980s.
  • Keshubhai left the BJP in 2012 and formed the Gujarat Parivartan Party. In 2012, he was elected from Visavadar assembly seat but had to resign in 2014 due to ill health.

India Proposes IFS Officer Suresh Kumar as Charge d' Affaires to Pakistan

  • India has proposed the name of IFS officer Suresh Kumar as the new Charge d' affaires to Pakistan. Suresh is a 2006 batch IFS and has worked as deputy secretary at the Pakistan desk in the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • Earlier, India had proposed name of Jayant Khobragade and it is learnt that Pakistan had denied visa at that time.
  • In June, India and Pakistan downsized by fifty per cent staff at missions both in New Delhi and Islamabad after some members of the Pakistan High Commission were caught spying.
  • India's top diplomat Acting Charge d' affaires in Pakistan Gaurav Ahluwalia had also complained about harassment.

  • World Thrift Day is observed every year on 30th October. It was previously known as World Thrift Day.
  • It is celebrated in many countries around the world to promote the importance of savings for the country's economy and the individuals. As we all know savings is a necessity for the global economy and every depositor contributes to its development.
  • World Thrift Day was first introduced on 30th October 1924 to encourage the importance of bank savings and restore people's confidence in banks. It was established during the 1st International Savings Bank Congress (World Society of Savings Banks) In Milan, Italy.

Global Awards for Victor Banerjee

  • Actor Victor Banerjee won two global awards in two days for his role as a priest, Father O'Hara, in the 2019 film, Josef - Born in Grace. The first was for Best Actor at the India International Film Festival of Boston and the second, was best supporting actor, at the Ontario International Film Festival in October 2020.
  • Josef - Born in Grace has made waves since its release in 2019. It was in the race for contention at the Oscars earlier this year.
  • In September, it won Best Set Design at the Madrid International Film Festival; and it also won a second award at the Ontario International Film Festival this week, when Sudheer Palsane was declared Best Cinematographer.
  • Directed by Susant Misra, Josef - Born in Grace is an adaptation of a short story titled Joseph, written by well-known Odia author Umakanta Mahapatra.

New Law to Tackle Problem of Air Pollution in Delhi-NCR

  • In a bid to tackle the persistent problem of air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Centre has introduced a new law through an ordinance which comes into force with immediate effect.
  • According to the ordinance released by the Ministry of Law and Justice, violation of the provisions entails a punishment of a jail term up to five years or with fine up to Rs. 1 crore or with both.
  • The ordinance may be called the Commission for Air Quality Management In National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas Ordinance 2020. It shall apply to the national capital region and also adjoining areas in so far as it relates to matters concerning air pollution in the NCR. 
  • The ordinance was signed by the President.
  • As per the ordinance, the adjoining areas where it shall be in force include Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, adjoining areas of the NCR and Delhi where any source of pollution is located which is causing an adverse impact on air quality in the national capital region.
  • The commission will consist of over 20 members who will ensure strict compliance.

Thailand's First Transgender MP Dismissed from Parliament

  • Thailand's parliament lost its first transgender MP after the constitutional court revoked her seat in what critics called a political move against supporters of the kingdom's pro-democracy movement.
  • Tanwarin Sukkhapisit, a former actor and film-maker, was a pioneer for the LGBT community when she won a seat at last year's election for the Future Forward Party.
  • But the party was dissolved in February 2020, a move that escalated discontent and fuelled pro-democracy activists to demand the government step down.

Schemes for Women Scientists, Researchers in Science and Engineering

  • Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan launched the SERB – POWER schemes that aim to encourage emerging as well as eminent women researchers to undertake research and development activities in frontier areas of science and engineering.
  • The schemes will promote women researchers in regular service in academic and research institutions to take up research and development at the highest level through two categories of research support: SERB – POWER Fellowship and SERB – POWER Research Grants.
  • The SERB-Power Fellowship offers a personal fellowship and a research grant to top performing women researchers for a period of three years, while the SERB – Power Research Grants ensure funding to undertake highly impactful research across all disciplines of Science & Technology.

OP Jindal University Gets Institution of Eminence Tag

  • The OP Jindal Global University signed an MoU with the Ministry of Education which officially recognised the varsity as an Institution of Eminence.
  • The university was selected by the UGC, along with 13 other higher education institutions, for IoE status last year. However, for official confirmation, the institution had to fulfil certain legislative and procedural requirements.
  • With the conferment of the status of an Institution of Eminence to JGU, we have entered into India's own 'Ivy League' equivalent of top 10 public and top 10 private institutions.
