IIT-Delhi Researchers Develop Device to Generate Electricity from Raindrops

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi researchers have designed a device that can generate electricity from water drops, raindrops, water streams, and ocean waves which can be stored in batteries for further use.
  • The device has been developed using "Triboelectric Effect" and "Electrostatic Induction". It is called "Liquid-solid Interface Triboelectric Nanogenerator".
  • The device has a very simple structure consisting of specially designed nanocomposite polymers and contact electrodes and can generate a few Milliwatt (mW) power, which is sufficient to power small electronic devices like watches, digital thermometers, radio frequency transmitters, healthcare sensors, pedometers. When compared to conventional methods, such as the use of the piezoelectric effect, the present device can generate significantly more electricity.

THE World University Subject-Wise Rankings 2022

  • The Times Higher Education (THE) has released the World University Subject-Wise Rankings 2022 for physical sciences, life sciences, psychology, and clinical and health sciences. More than 1,600 universities from 99 countries have been ranked in at least one discipline. The University of California takes first place in the physical sciences category, while Harvard University is at the top of the life sciences category.
  • Several Indian universities and institutions have made it to the 2022 ranking list. India's JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, placed in Rank 93, is the only institution to debut in the top 100 for clinical and health sciences.

'Ebola is Defeated', Says Congolese Professor Who Discovered the Virus

  • Ebola has been defeated. Vaccines and medical treatments have brought the deadly and terrifying disease under control, says Jean-Jacques Muyembe, the Congolese professor who first discovered the virus more than 40 years ago.
  • The 79-year-old virologist was speaking at a ceremony in the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital Kinshasa marking the arrival on the market of the "Ebanga" treatment, which was approved last December by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

NITI Aayog, Byju's Tie Up to Educate Children in 112 Aspirational Districts

  • Government think tank NITI Aayog has partnered with Byju's, the world's most valuable edtech company with a valuation of $16.5 billion, to provide children from 112 aspirational districts of the country free access to Byju's high-quality and tech-driven learning programmes.
  • Byju's Career-Plus programme, under Aakash plus Byju's, will identify and provide high-quality test prep coaching to 3,000 meritorious students of classes 11 and 12 who aspire to appear for NEET and JEE.

IIT Guwahati Launches New Centre for Intelligent Cyber Physical Systems

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati launched the Centre for Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (CICPS), aimed at developing indigenous technologies. The centre will target developing a minimum of five technologies a year. These technologies will be developed indigenously and will generate direct and indirect employment opportunities.
  • As many as 13 PhD students and 18 MTech students have already joined the CICPS and these students will particularly work on the technologies for underwater exploration. The TIH – IIT Guwahati will fund the centre for the first five years, after which the centre is intended to become self-sustaining.

Three NIELIT Centres of Northeast State Inaugurated

  • Union Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, inaugurated three National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) centres of northeast states.
  • One of the NIELIT centres was inaugurated in Churachandpur district of Manipur, physically. While, two other centres were inaugurated in Kokrajhar and Tezpur districts of Assam.
  • On the occasion, two existing centres at Imphal & at Aizawl districts of Mizoram were upgraded.
  • Minister noted that, NIELIT centre in Churachandpur district, these NIELIT centres would be soon be acting as job creation centres with the collaboration of Centre and States.
  • These centres will not just be training centres but these are centres to skill the youth and get them into the runway of opportunity and jobs.

India has Second-highest Women Learners for Online Courses in World

  • Women in India are learning online at higher rates compared to pre-pandemic, representing 44 per cent of new learners in 2021, up from 37 per cent in 2019. The Women and Skills Report by Coursera compares pre-pandemic enrolment and performance data with trends observed on the platform since the onset of the pandemic through June 2021.
  • With 4.8 million registered women learners, India ranks second worldwide for the highest number of registered women learners on Coursera.

Pondicherry University Ranks 8th among Central Institutions

  • Pondicherry University took the 8th spot among the 54 Central universities in India in the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2021 released by the Ministry of Education.
  • Pondicherry University was placed in 58th position with a score of 44.36 under 'University Category' and 87th place with a score of 43.10 under 'Overall Category' among the 1,657 participating institutions this year in the Ministry of Education–NIRF survey.

ISB, IIM-Bangalore in Top 10 Asia-Pacific Varsities

  • Bloomberg Businessweek released the global ranking of best business schools 2021. In the Asia-Pacific B-Schools ranking, the Indian School of Business has been ranked at the fifth position while IIM Bangalore secured the sixth rank. The best B-Schools results for 2021 are divided into four regions: Europe, Asia-Pacific, Canada and the United States.
  • China Europe International Business School has been placed at the top followed by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology at second rank and the National University of Singapore at the third spot in the Asia Pacific region.

IIT-Bombay Launches 'Project Udaan'

  • IIT-Bombay launched its "Project Udaan" on the occasion of Hindi Diwas.
  • Project Udaan was launched with the aim of breaking the language barrier that many students face while joining the institutes of higher education.
  • Project Udaan enables the translation of textbooks and other study material of the engineering and other streams from English to Hindi and other Indian languages. This project was envisaged by Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan from Department of Computer Science & Engineering in IIT Bombay. It is a donation based and Artificial Intelligence-based translation ecosystem. It helps in translating engineering textbooks and learning materials in one-sixth the time as compared to manual tasking. This machine translation will be aided by human effort.
