India, Netherlands Collaborate in E-health Initiative

  • India and the Netherlands discussed a joint thrust in e-health sector with the purpose of providing digital health facilities and security to Indians and helping the Netherlands accelerate the digital transformation of health.
  • Part of India''s ambitious National Digital Health Mission (NDHM), this collaboration will see the two countries work closely to create capacities and put in place the requisite technology backbone to enable this revolutionary initiative.
  • The NDHM, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day, aims to create a mechanism to improve healthcare significantly and provide better access to it.

India, Chile hold first joint commission meeting

  • India and Chile held their first joint commission meeting and agreed to add new momentum to their relations in a wide range of fields including trade and commerce, agriculture, health and social security, defence and space.
  • The meeting held virtually was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chilean counterpart Andres Allamand Zavala. Both sides noted that the Joint Commission was a significant development in India - Chile relations, being the first institutionalized dialogue between the two countries at the level of Foreign Ministers.
  • India welcomed Chile's decision to designate India as a priority country in its foreign policy. Chile will also be opening its Consulate General in Mumbai.
  • Based on their convergence of views on many global and regional issues, both sides agreed to coordinate closely at the multilateral fora.

Israel and Bahrain to Formalise Diplomatic Ties

  • Israel and Bahrain officially established diplomatic relations at a ceremony in Manama as the wealthy Gulf region continues to open up to the Jewish state.
  • An Israeli delegation, led by National Security Council chief Meir Ben Shabbat, arrived from Tel Aviv for a one-day trip that saw Israel and Bahrain formalise a US-brokered agreement they signed at the White House on September 15.
  • The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain became only the third and fourth Arab states to agree to normalise ties with Israel, following Israel's 1979 peace deal with Egypt and a 1994 pact with Jordan.

Tata Motors Partners with HDFC Bank for Financing of Passenger Vehicles

  • Tata Motors has partnered with HDFC Bank for financing of its passenger vehicles. Through the partnership, the company said it has introduced two new schemes -- 'Gradual Step Up Scheme' and 'TML Flexi Drive Scheme' with an eye on making its products more accessible and driving up sales in the festive season.
  • The schemes will be available till the end of November 2020 and can be redeemed on the entire new BS-VI range of cars and SUVs along with the company's EV range.
  • Under the Gradual Step Up scheme, customers can avail EMI options as low as ₹799 per lakh per month, depending on the product and variant. The EMI payments gradually increase over a period of 2 years depending on the payment convenience of the buyer.

Religare Health Insurance renamed to Care Health Insurance

  • Religare Health Insurance Company, subsidiary health insurance entity of Religare Enterprises, changed its name to 'Care Health Insurance'. 
  • "The name of 'Religare Health Insurance Company Limited', subsidiary of the company, has been changed to 'Care Health Insurance Limited' w.e.f. August 19, 2020," the company mentioned in a regulatory exchange.
  • The company did not disclose any particular reason for changing the name is its health insurance subsidiary.

Prithvi-2 Missile Blasts off from Odisha in User Trial

  • India successfully conducted another night trial of its nuclear-capable Prithvi-2 missile as part of a user trial for the armed forces from a test range in Odisha coast. User trial was carried out by the Strategic Force Command.
  • The liquid-propelled Prithvi-2 has a range of 250 km and can carry a 1 tonne warhead. The 9-metre tall missile is the first to have been developed by DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. It is India's first indigenous surface-to-surface strategic missile.
  • The trajectory of the missiles was tracked by a battery of long-range, multi-function radars and electro-optic telemetry stations at different locations.

  • The first satellite, the first human in space, the first to the Moon. But the launch of Soyuz MS-17 was a different kind of milestone: the end of an era.
  • A Soyuz rocket blasted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Russia's sprawling and remote space launch facility in Kazakhstan, to the International Space Station.
  • It was the last time NASA paid for an American astronaut to fly with the Russian Space Agency, Roscosmos, on such a flight. Next year, for the first time since the start of the ISS program 20 years ago, Russia will fly all-Russian crews on Soyuz.

Pakistan Fast Bowler Umar Gul Announces Retirement

  • Pakistan speedster Umar Gul announced he will retire from all forms of cricket after the end of the ongoing National T20 Cup.
  • The 36-year-old Gul, who played his last match for Pakistan - an ODI - in 2016, featured for Balochistan team in the National T20 Cup.
  • The Peshawar-born Gul made his international debut in an ODI in 2003. He played his first Test that year itself.

  • PFC has signed/exchanged agreement for Liquidity Infusion Scheme under "Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan" for UT of J&K.
  • PFC has sanctioned Rs. 2790 crore to JKPCL for clearance of outstanding dues of CPSU, GENCOs & TRANSCOs, IPPs and RE Generators as on 31st March 2020.
  • The exhange agreement was signed in the presence of Shri Rohit Kansal, Principal Secretary, PDD Along with senior officers from JKPDD, KPDCL, JPDCL, PFC & REC.

Iran Hails Lifting of UN Arms Embargo

  • Iranian officials have hailed the lifting of a 13-year UN arms embargo on their military as a momentous day, claiming they were once again free to buy and sell conventional weapons in an effort to strengthen their country's security.
  • The embargo was lifted in 2020 despite US protests and was in line with the five-year timetable set out in the Iran nuclear deal, which was signed in 2015.
  • Russia and China are the two countries now most likely to offer arms to Tehran, making Iran less dependent on its own weapons industry – and smuggling.
  • But Iran's parlous financial state, and the continued threat of US sanctions on anyone trading with the country, means Tehran is unlikely to go on a short-term buying spree, or reach anything like the defence spending levels of its chief Gulf rivals Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

  • Padmabhushana Vid. Shri Puliyur Subramaniam Narayanaswamy, one among the finest gurus of carnatic music in India, passed away at his residence. 
  • A winner of many awards and titles, including the Padma Bhushan, and Kalaimamani from the Tamil Nadu government, Narayanaswamy was a torch bearer of the Semmangudi Tradition, evolving a style of his own with 'Manodharma Sangeetham'.

India Hosts 7th Justice Minister's Meeting of SCO member states

  • Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Union Law Minister virtually hosted the 7th Justice Minister's meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states on October 16, 2020.
  • The 7th Justice Minister's meeting was attended by Law and Justice Ministers of Pakistan, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic. A joint statement by the SCO member states was also signed on the occasion.
  • In the 7th meeting of the Ministers of Justice of the SCO, the states further deliberated on creating favourable conditions for resolving the disputes, on the areas of the cooperation, and implementation of the Action Plan of the Working Groups of Experts on legal Services and Forensic Activities.

India ranks 94/107 in Global Hunger Index

  • India ranked 94 among 107 nations in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2020 and is in the serious hunger category with experts blaming poor implementation processes and lack of effective monitoring in tackling malnutrition and poor performance by large states behind the low ranking.
  • According to the report, 14% of India's population is undernourished. It also showed the country recorded a 37.4% stunting rate among children under five and a wasting rate of 17.3%. The under-five mortality rate stood at 3.7%.
  • The Global Hunger Index is a tool for comprehensively measuring and tracking hunger at global, regional, and national levels.

Nagaland Launches Handbook on "TB Harega, Desh Jeetega"

  • In line with the government's commitment to end Tuberculosis by 2025 in the country, Nagaland Minister for Health and Family Welfare , Mr. S. Pangnyu Phom launched  a handbook on "TB Harega, Desh Jeetega" .
  • Launching the handbook, Mr. Phom said, the National TB Elimination Programme, NTEP Nagaland is committed to reduce TB burden in terms of incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality to make the state free from tuberculosis.
  • The main purpose of this handbook, is to proactively engage more elected representatives such as MLAs, members of Zila Parishad, VDB members and Gram Panchayat or Gram Sabha to help address social stigma as well as to promote advocacy and community involvement in TB programme.

IAA India and UNICEF Come Together to Promote Equal Gender Representation in Advertising

  • UNICEF and India Chapter of International Advertising Association (IAA) have entered into a partnership to support research on gender representation in advertisements in India based on evidence and real-time validation. 
  • This is based on the understanding that marketing plays a powerful role in shaping gender roles and perceptions and advertising is an important tool that can influence women and girls' empowerment.
  • The changing and evolving landscape of advertisements has a huge potential to promote gender equitable practices especially among young people.

Large 2,000-year-old Cat Discovered in Peru's Nazca Lines

  • The figure of a relaxing cat has been discovered in the Nazca desert in Peru.
  • The Nazca lines, a Unesco World Heritage site, is home to designs on the ground - known as geoglyphs - created some 2,000 years ago.
  • Scientists believe the cat, as with other Nazca animal figures, was created by making depressions in the desert floor, leaving coloured earth exposed.
  • The cat then went unnoticed until plans were recently drawn up for a new path leading to an observation platform.
  • The platform would have provided a vantage point for visitors to see many of the other geoglyphs.
