US Signs Defence Cooperation Deal With Maldives

  • The US has signed a framework for defence cooperation with the Maldives to deepen engagement in support of maintaining peace and security in the strategic Indian Ocean, as the Trump administration looks for strengthening alliances in the Indo-Pacific to counter China's growing presence in the region.
  • The framework for defence and security relationship was signed in Philadelphia on September 10, 2020 between Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for South and Southeast Asia Reed Werner and Maldivian Minister of Defence Mariya Didi. 
  • The framework sets forth both countries' intent to deepen engagement and cooperation in support of maintaining peace and security in the Indian OCean.

Liberia Declares Rape a National Emergency

  • Liberian President George Weah has declared rape a national emergency and ordered new measures to tackle the problem after a recent spike of cases in the West African state.
  • The move comes after thousands of Liberians protested against rising incidents of rape in the capital Monrovia in a bid to draw attention to the country's alarming rate of sexual assault.
    • The government will also establish a so-called "national security task force" on sexual and gender-based violence.
    • The high rates of rape in Liberia have been a long-standing concern.
    • A United Nations report in 2016 recorded 803 rape cases the previous year in the country of 4.5 million, and found only 2 percent of sexual violence cases led to a conviction.

Bahrain Joins UAE in Establishing Relations with Israel

  • Bahrain has become the second Gulf nation to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel, joining the United Arab Emirates in normalizing ties with the Jewish state and reshaping politics in the Middle East.
  • Bahraini officials said the agreement will help promote peace in the region, a position that is not shared by its neighbor Iran. The government in Tehran, which supports the island nation's majority Shiite population, warned the deal will further destabilize the region.

Sebi Shortlists Bharti Airtel, Wipro, Others to Revamp IT Infra Network

  • Markets regulator Sebi has shortlisted eight companies including Bharti Airtel, Wipro and Tata Communications to revamp its IT infrastructure network and communication systems.
  • The other shortlisted companies are -- Hewlett Packard Enterprise India, IBM India, NTT India, Orange Business Services India Technology and Sify Technologies.
  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is looking to refurbish its IT infrastructure network and communication systems.
  • Besides, it is planning to have a centralised control over its network and IP (internet protocol) telephony infrastructure.

Banned ULFA Had Sought Britain's Help in Dhaka

  • Days before the Prafulla Kumar Mahanta government was dismissed in 1990 and the Indian Army launched Operation Bajrang against the secessionist United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), three of its senior functionaries met a British diplomat in Dhaka and sought the UK's help to further its cause.
  • Newly declassified documents released by National Archives show that while the banned outfit was attacking British commercial interests in the tea gardens in Assam, it was seeking the UK's help at the political level and offering the British diplomat a tour of its camps in Assam.
  • In 1990 - when Assam was gripped by tension and fear - the then Mahanta-led Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) was a constituent of the National Front (NF) government led by V P Singh. But the AGP government was dismissed on November 27 after the NF government fell and Chandra Shekhar formed his minority government.

DIAL Launches Country's First Covid-19 Testing Facility at an Airport

  • Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) launched country's first airport Covid-19 testing facility at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi for arriving international passengers.
  • Those who wish to avoid a queue can book a slot via the airport's website.
  • Since the testing process is expected to generate a sample's result in around 6 hours, passengers with connecting flights are advised to keep an 8-10 hour window.
  • Those who test negative are exempted from institutional quarantine, but those who test positive will either be moved to a hospital, or home or institutional isolation.
  • The objective of the authorities is to separate infected passengers from the rest to prevent further spread of the disease.

RAF Intercepts Russian Aircraft off Scottish Coast

  • UK fighter jets have intercepted two Russian aircraft off the Scottish coast.
  • The Ministry of Defence said the RAF Typhoons were scrambled after the Russian aircraft "entered the UK's controlled zone of international airspace".
  • The Russian planes were identified as TU-142 Bear F maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft.
  • The RAF aircraft are currently operating from Leuchars in Fife.

  • Former Union Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, 74, passed away in New Delhi after a prolonged illness. 
  • The five-term Lok Sabha MP representing Vaishali had been in the news recently despite his illness for expressing his disenchantment with the way his party for 32 years, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), was being run and handwritten letters, attributed to him, were being circulated as his resignation from the party.

  • In the United States, Patriot Day occurs on September 11 of each year in memory of the people killed in the September 11 attacks of the year 2001.
  • A bill to make September 11 a national day of mourning was introduced in the U.S. House on October 25, 2001, by Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY) with 22 co-sponsors. The result was the resolution to proclaim September 11, 2002, as the first Patriot Day.

  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar has congratulated Chaitanya Tamhane for winning the 'International Critics Award' at the Venice Film Festival.
  • Mr Javadekar said Tamhane won the award for the film 'The Disciple' that portrays three decades of an Indian classical music practitioners' journey rooted in Guru-Shishya parampara.

US Film Nomadland Triumphs at Venice Film Festival

  • US film Nomadland has won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, the first such event held with live audiences since the Covid-19 outbreak.
  • The film, by Chinese-born Chloé Zhao, stars Frances McDormand as a widow living as a nomad after the 2008 financial crisis.
  • Mexican director Michel Franco's thriller New Order and historic drama Wife of a Spy by Japan's Kiyoshi Kurosawa were also recognised.
  • Guests had to wear masks at screenings.
  • About half of the seats at the venues on the Lido waterfront were left empty, and few celebrities made the trip to the world's oldest film festival.

  • A statue of a Confederate soldier has been taken down in the US city of Charlottesville, Virginia, the scene of a far-right rally three years ago.
  • Crowds cheered as a crane removed the bronze figure, known as "At Ready".
  • There has been an increased focus on monuments connected to slavery in the wake of mass anti-racism protests in the US and abroad this year.
  • A number of statues have been removed as a result.
  • Memorials to the Confederacy, a group of southern states that fought in favour of slavery against the Union in the American Civil War of 1861-65, have been among those targeted.
