Chinese Chipmaker Denies Military Ties as US Steps up Feud
China's leading maker of semiconductors has denied it has any links to the military following reports Washington is considering stepping up its feud with Beijing over technology and security by imposing export controls that could disrupt manufacturing for a national industrial champion.
The US regulators are considering adding Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation to a list of foreign buyers that need government permission to acquire technology or components.
Officials are looking at whether SMIC plays a role in Chinese military development.
SMIC products were solely for civilian and commercial end-users and end-uses.
The Trump administration is trying to block Chinese access to US technology it worries might be used to make weapons or develop competitors to American industry.
The United States and other governments complain Chinese development plans are based on stealing or pressuring foreign companies to hand over technology.
Researchers Discover Two New Species of Wasp Cockroach
Researchers at the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Kozhikode have discovered two new species of cockroach wasps in the Western Ghats.
These wasp species were discovered from Coonoor in Tamil Nadu and Peppara Wild Life Sanctuary in Kerala. They belonged to the family Ampulicidae and hunted cockroaches to feed their larvae, thereby helping to control the natural population of cockroaches.
The new finds have been named 'Dolichurus sahyadriensis' after Sahyadri or Western Ghat mountain ranges and 'Dolichurus chareshi' after C. Charesh, laboratory assistant attached to the ZSI, Kozhikode, who has contributed immensely for the collection of the species.
Another wasp of the same genus, 'Dolichurus aridulus' known only from Sri Lanka was also recorded for the first time from Tamil Nadu and Kerala during their present study. With this seven Dolichurus species are presently listed from India.
Government Expands Support to Artisans for Boosting Agarbatti Production
The government expanded the support to artisans involved in agarbatti making as part of a programme aimed at making India self-reliant in the production incensed sticks. The MSME Ministry had recently approved the 'Khadi Agarbatti Aatmanirbhar Mission' towards creating employment for the unemployed and migrant workers in different parts of the country, handholding artisans and supporting the local agarbatti industry.
The current consumption of agarbatti in the country is approximately 1,490 MT per day. However, per day production of agarbatti in India is just 760 MT. The deficit is met through imports primarily from China and Vietnam.
The four main pillars of the new programme are continuously supporting the artisans through training, raw material, marketing and financial support; working on all aspects of this product, like innovation in the fragrance & packaging; setting up 10 clusters with proper marketing linkages under SFURTI; and strengthening the machine manufacturing capability to achieve self-sufficiency in the country.
KfW IPEX-Bank Offers Loan of 10 mn Euros to Srei Equipment Finance
With the successful close of an export financing transaction, KfW IPEX-Bank is enabling the export of construction machinery for Srei Equipment Finance Limited (SEFL) to India by providing a framework loan of 10 million euros. The financing is backed by cover from Euler Hermes. Through this commitment, KfW IPEX-Bank is helping to provide construction machinery for use in Indian infrastructure projects. The financed machinery from a German construction machine manufacturer includes asphalt machines, road pavers and rollers.
The borrower, SEFL, was set up in 2008 to pool orders from individual Indian construction companies and make the newly ordered machines available to the respective users.
Voda Idea Launches New Unified Brand Vi
Amid its struggle to survive, telecommunication major Vodafone Idea rebranded itself as Vi, after nearly two years of merger of erstwhile Vodafone and Idea Cellular.
The company also unveiled its new website, www.myvi.in.
VI will represent the integrated identity of Vodafone Idea. It has a strong reliable network, is agile and caters to the needs of Indian customers in the digital era.
Promoters of the company via a number of domestic and international firms hold 72.05 per cent of shares of the company. Rest is held by public shareholders, which includes mutual funds, AIFs and insurance companies.
Minister of State for the Department of Space Jitendra Singh said that Chandrayaan-3, India's mission to Moon, would be launched in early 2021. Singh added that Chandrayaan-3 will be different from Chandrayaan-2 as the former will not have an orbiter, but will include a lander and a rover.
It may be recalled that Chandrayaan-2 was launched in September 2019 and India's premier space agency ISRO had planned to launch Chandrayaan-3 in 2020 but the plan failed to materialise due to coronavirus pandemic.
World number one Novak Djokovic was disqualified in the fourth round of US Open after the Serbian star hit a lineswoman with a ball during his match against Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta.
Djokovic looked frustrated during the match after failing to take the opening set against Busta and it seems that out of frustration he hit the ball to the back of the court, hitting the lineswoman.
The Serbian star, however, immediately apologised for his mistake as the lineswoman gasped in pain and collapsed to the ground.
The lineswoman got to her feet after few minutes and after that tournament referee Soeren Friemel and Andreas Egli, the Grand Slam supervisor, came on the court to discuss the situation with Djokovic. The conversation ended after around 10 minutes and Djokovic walked to his chair and packed up his rackets ending his US Open 2020 campaign.

Former MP Jitin Prasada, and ex-UP Congress committee chief Raj Babbar were not included in four core committees announced by the party keeping in mind the 2022 UP elections.
The two were among 23 senior Congressmen who wrote a letter last month to the party chief Sonia Gandhi, dragging her attention towards the uncertainties about the leadership. Former MP RPN Singh is also among prominent leaders from the state who could not make it to these committees.
Total 27 senior Congress members were included in these committees.

Kesavananda Bharati, on whose petition the Supreme Court delivered the landmark judgement on the celebrated doctrine of basic structure of the Constitution, passed away.
People from all walks of life paid homage to the departed seer at the Edneer Mutt of which he became the head overfive decades ago.
The case in which Bharati had challenged Kerala Land Reform laws nearly four decades ago set the principle that the Supreme Court is the guardian of the basic structure of the Constitution and the verdict involved 13 judges, the largest bench ever to sit in the apex court. While the seer did not get the relief he wanted, the case became significant for its landmark judgment which clipped the widest power of Parliament to amend the Constitution and simultaneously gave judiciary the authority to review any amendment.
Kesavananda Bharati Swamiji, the seer of Edneer Mutt was a rare blend of philosopher, classical singer and a cultural icon. His patronage of Yakshagana was crucial in reviving this traditional theatre form in Karnataka.
Jiri Menzel: Oscar Winning Czech Director Passes Away
Oscar-winning Czech director Jiri Menzel died aged 82 after battling serious health issues.
Menzel won an Academy Award in 1968 for best foreign language film for World War Two drama Closely Watched Trains.
He was one of the leading figures in the Czech New Wave cinema during the 1960s alongside One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest director Milos Forman.
Menzel was rarely seen in public after brain surgery in 2017.
