India, Japan and Australia Decide to Launch Resilient Supply Chain Initiative in the Indo-Pacific Region

  • India, Japan and Australia said an initiative to build resilient supply chains in the Indo-Pacific region could be launched later this year, as they seek to reduce dependence on China following its hostile political and military conduct. The trio aim to create a free and transparent trade and investment environment.
  • This was decided at a virtual meeting attended by Australia's Minister for Trade, tourism and investment Simon Birmingham; India's Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Kajiyama Hiroshi.
  • This initiative was first proposed by Japan and is now taking shape.
  • The ministers instructed their officials to work out the details of the initiative for its launch later this year. They called for other countries in the region, which share similar views, to participate in the initiative.
  • The initiative comes at a time when there is a likelihood of rechurning of supply chains in the Indo-Pacific region.

Malaysia to Bar Long-term Pass Holders from India, Indonesia and Philippines

  • Malaysia would bar entry of long-term immigration pass holders from India, Indonesia and the Philippines from September 7, in a bid to curtail imported coronavirus cases amid a spate of new clusters in the country.
  • The entry ban on pass holders from the three countries will include permanent residents, expatriates, students and those on spouse visas and participants of Malaysia's 'My Second Home' programme.
  • A total of 7,505 people have died of the coronavirus in Indonesia, the highest in the region, while the Philippines, which has reported over 224,000 cases, has seen a continuous rise in infections.

Afghanistan Resumes Taliban Prisoner Release

  • Afghanistan has resumed the controversial release of hundreds of Taliban prisoners.
  • As per reports, 200 prisoners had been freed by the Afghan authorities, while the Taliban reportedly released four Afghan commandos.
  • The release of Taliban inmates has been a pre-condition to negotiations to end 19 years of conflict in the country.
  • Peace talks are expected to start in Qatar within days of the full release.
  • Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai praised the resumption of the prisoner release, and described the resumption as a positive step towards peace in Afghanistan.

Adani Ranks as the Largest Solar Power Generation Owner Globally

  • The latest ranking of global solar companies by Mercom Capital ranked the Adani Group as number one global solar power generation asset owner in terms of operating solar projects.
  • As per Adani, its renewable energy portfolio exceeds the total capacity installed by the entire United States solar industry in 2019 and will displace over 1.4 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide over the life of its assets.
  • The group is one of the most fully integrated solar players in the world, manufacturing solar cells and modules, undertaking project development, construction, financial structuring and owning and operating its assets through its internal asset management platform.
  • According to the ranking, Adani is roughly 70 per cent larger than the next largest global solar power generation company.
  • Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) established its first solar project in 2015. In 2017, the company completed two solar projects. It went public in 2018 and has accelerated its presence to reach the current milestone of being the largest solar player in the world in a short span of just five years with a stated target of reaching 25 gigawatts of renewable power by 2025.

Govt. Gives Nod to 27 Projects under Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana

  • The government approved 27 cold chain projects in 11 states with a grant-in-aid of Rs. 208 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY). These projects were "approved" in Inter-Ministerial Approval Committee (IMAC) meetings under the 'Scheme for Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure' of PMKSY.
  • The meetings, held during second fortnight of August, were chaired by Food Processing According to the ministry, the 27 new integrated cold chain projects will leverage a total investment of Rs. 743 crore for creation of modern, innovative infrastructure and effective cold chain facilities for food processing sector across the nation.
  • These projects will help increase efficiency and sustainability in India's food supply chain," it said. The new integrated cold chain projects are likely to generate direct and indirect employment for 16,200 people and are likely to benefit 2,57,904 farmers.

Centre Launches 'Green Term Ahead Market' For Renewable Energy Sector

  • Union Power Minister R. K. Singh launched a pan-India Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) in electricity as a first step towards greening the Indian short term power market.
  • The GTAM platform will lead to an increase in the number of participants in the renewable energy sector. It will benefit buyers of RE through competitive prices and transparent and flexible procurement. It will also benefit RE sellers by providing access to the pan-India market.
  • The Modi government has laid out an ambitious target of 175 GW RE Capacity by 2022 and GTAM contracts will allow additional avenues to the RE generators for sale of renewable energy; enable obligated entities to procure renewable power at competitive prices to meet their RPO; provide a platform to environmentally conscious open access consumers and utilities to buy green power.
  • Transactions through GTAM will be bilateral in nature with clear identification of corresponding buyers and sellers, there will not be any difficulty in accounting for RPO.

Astronomers Discover One of the Farthest Star Galaxies in the Universe

  • Indian astronomers have discovered one of the farthest star galaxies in the universe, estimated to be located 9.3 billion light years away from Earth.
  • This is a landmark achievement for country's first Multi-Wavelength Space Observatory "AstroSat."
  • The galaxy called AUDFs01 was discovered by a team of Astronomers led by Dr. Kanak Saha from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics(IUCAA) Pune.
  • The importance and uniqueness of this original discovery can be made out from the fact that it has been reported in the international journal "Nature Astronomy" published from Britain.
  • According to Director of Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) Dr. Somak Ray Chaudhury, this discovery is a very important clue to how the dark ages of the Universe ended and there was light in the Universe.
  • Pertinent to mention that India's first Space Observatory AstroSat, which has made this discovery, was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on September 28, 2015 during the first term of the Modi Government. It was developed by a team led by ShyamTandon, Ex-Emeritus Professor, IUCAA with the full support of ISRO.

Centre Increases Disciplines for Recruitment of Sportspersons in Govt. Jobs

  • The Centre has included 20 more sports disciplines like tug-of-war, mallakhamb and para-sports among others for direct recruitment of meritorious sportspersons in Group C level government posts.
  • The move comes following a proposal from the Department of Sports for inclusion of some more disciplines in the list of 43 sports for recruitment of sportspersons to any Group C post in ministries/departments of government of India.
  • It has now been decided to accept the recommendation of Department of Sports.
  • Accordingly, the list of sports/games for the purpose of recruitment of sportspersons by government of India is revised to have 63 sports disciplines.
  • according to existing instructions, sportspersons who have represented a state or the country in national or international competitions in any of the 63 games/sports are eligible for appointment for Group C level posts.
  • Sportspersons who have been awarded national awards in physical efficiency under the National Physical Efficiency Drive, among others, are also eligible for the appointment to such posts.
  • No such appointments can be made unless the candidate is, in all respects, eligible for appointment to the post applied for, and in particular, with regard to age, educational or experience qualifications prescribed under the recruitment rules applicable to the post, except to the extent to which relaxations thereof have been permitted in respect of class/category of persons to which the applicant belongs, said the Personnel Ministry's instructions issued in 2013.

  • The Cabinet approved Jammu and Kashmir Official Languages Bill, 2020.
  • Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri, Hindi and English to be official languages in Jammu and Kashmir under the new Bill approved by the Cabinet.
  • the Union Cabinet also approved Mission Karmayogi for bringing post-recruitment reforms in the government.

Ahead of Bihar Polls, Jitan Ram Manjhi's Party Says it Will Join NDA

  • As per reports, former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi-led HAM(S) will join the NDA ahead of the Bihar elections.
  • HAM(S) national president Jitan Ram Manjhi will formally announce the party becoming a part of the NDA in Bihar in a day or two.
  • The party is firmly standing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for their development works.
  • Manjhi had on August 20 severed ties with the Grand Alliance after spending two-and-a-half years in the opposition coalition, comprising of RJD, Congress, RLSP and Bollywood set designer-turned-politician Mukesh Sahni's Vikasshil Insaan Party (VIP).
  • Manjhi is the lone member of his party in the assembly. But, his induction would help the NDA's outreach to Dalits, particularly other than Paswans which is the support base of the LJP.

Tata Group and L&T to build six Pinaka Rocket Regiments for Army

  • The Defence Ministry signed contracts with the Tata Power Company Limited (TPCL) and the Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for supply of six Pinaka rocket regiments for the Army at approximately Rs. 2,580 crore. This will be the first instance of the private industry manufacturing the complete Pinaka system.
  • These six Pinaka regiments comprise 114 launchers with automated gun aiming and positioning system (AGAPS) and 45 command posts to be procured from TPCL and L&T and 330 vehicles to be procured from Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML). The regiments will be operationalised along the northern and the eastern borders and the induction is planned to be completed by 2024.
  • This project is being processed under the Buy (Indian) categorisation with 70% indigenous content, the Ministry said. The Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) has been indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

CBDT Chairman Pramod Mody Gets Extension

  • The government has extended Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman Pramod Chandra Mody's tenure for a second time to ensure continuity in the leadership on income-tax matters during the next budget expected on February 1, 2021.
  • He was due to relinquish office on 1st September after ending the first one-year extension period.
  • Mody, a 1982-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, had taken over as the new chairman of CBDT on February 15, 2019. Before being elevated, Mody was the member-administration of CBDT, the apex policy making body of the income-tax department. He had succeeded Sushil Chandra, who was appointed as an Election Commissioner.

Hemant Khatri Assumes Charge as CMD of Hindustan Shipyard Limited

  • Retired Commodore Hemant Khatri succeeded Rear Admiral L. V. Sarat Babu (Retd) and assumed charge as the Chairman and Managing director (CMD) of Hindustan Shipyard limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, a Miniratna public sector undertaking (PSU) of the Ministry of Defence. Previously he was serving as the Director of Strategic Projects HSL.
  • His appointment as the CMD of HSL was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on 27th May 2020 with effective from 1st September 2020 till 31st July 2025 the date of his superannuation or until further orders.
  • Hemant Khatri is a former Indian Navy Officer, who has an immense experience on ship construction and repair. He joined HSL in April 2017.
  • He served in the naval dockyard and the headquarters at various capacities.
  • He worked in the Euro Shipyard in Italy for three years and oversaw the construction and delivery of INS Deepak and INS Shakti (Navy Fleet Tankers).

IIT Guwahati Collaborates with University in Czech Republic for Data Protection Project

  • A team of researchers from Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, in collaboration with scientists from the University of Pardubice, Czech Republic, is working towards developing indigenous algorithms that can protect the Nation's digital data from cyber-attacks by advanced computers. The team has also designed encryption architectures that can be used to protect sensitive health data that is transmitted through the internet.
  • The team led by Dr. Gaurav Trivedi, Associate Professor, Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, includes Prof. Srinivasan Krishnaswamy, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, Prof. Zdenek Nemec and Prof. Jan Pidanic from the University of Pardubice. The team also consists of research scholars Bikram Paul, Uddipana Dowerah, Tarun Kumar Yadav, Balbir Singh, Abhishek Agrawal, Meenali Janveja, and Souradip Pal from IIT Guwahati.

Karan Johar Authors a Children's Book "The Big Thoughts of Little Luv"

  • Bollywood Filmmaker Karan Johar authored a children's picture book titled "The Big Thoughts of Little Luv" inspired by his Twins Yash and Roohi. The book will be published by Juggernaut Books.
  • The book narrates the story of the twins Luv and Kusha and features the challenges faced by the parents and the difference imposed between the boys and girls by the parents while raising them.
  • This is the first picture book authored by Karan Johar.
  • Johar Karan released his autobiography titled "An Unsuitable Boy" in 2017.
  • He received the Padma Shri Award (the fourth Highest Civilian Award) in the field of Arts in January 2020.
