Jaishankar attends BRICS FMs' meet on coronavirus via video conferencing

  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar participated in BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting on coronavirus through video conferencing.
  • Opening remarks were made by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Russia is the Chair of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) for 2020.
  • The meeting was organized to discuss the joint efforts of the five-member states -- Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa -- to combat the virus and overcome the financial, economic, and social consequences of the pandemic.

Prakash Javadekar Stresses on Climate Finance in First Virtual Petersberg Climate Dialogue

  • Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change  Prakash Javadekar has said that, today, as the world is unitedly engaged in finding a vaccine for novel Coronavirus, likewise it should have climate technology as open source which must be available at affordable cost.
  • Representing India in the first virtual Petersberg Climate Dialogue, Mr Javadekar stressed on the issue of climate finance and said the world now needs more. He said, we must plan for 1 trillion dollar in grants to developing world immediately.

U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom downgrades India in 2020 list

  • The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has downgraded India to the lowest ranking, "countries of particular concern" (CPC) in its 2020 report.
  • The report, released in Washington by the federal government commission that functions as an advisory body, placed India alongside countries, including China, North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
  • India was categorised as a "Tier 2 country" in last year's listing. This is the first time since 2004 that India has been placed in this category.

  • 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan'—is all set to combat the health crisis and give a boost to the rural economy through its various components. This year (2020) owing to the COVID-19 emergency, and availability of large labour force in rural areas, the Abhiyan has started gearing up for the impending monsoon.
  • In a first of its case a Joint Advisory has been issued from the Department of Rural Development, Dept. of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Dept. of Land Resources & Dept of Drinking Water & Sanitation to all the Chief Secretaries of all States/ UTs, in context with the impending monsoon this year and the preparations to be done for water conservation and recharge which is of utmost importance for our country.

Axis Bank to raise its stake in Max Life Insurance to 30%

  • The country's third largest private lender Axis Bank, proposed to raise its stake in the country's fourth largest private life insurer Max Life Insurance from about 1.5% to 30% through an all-cash deal worth around Rs. 1,600 crore.

The Largest-ever Arctic Ozone Hole Developed this Spring

  • An ozone hole that formed over the Arctic this spring and eventually grew into the largest ever recorded there has closed.
  • Scientists who were tracking the hole at Copernicus' Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS) made the announcement, noting the "rather unusual" hole was caused not by human activity but a particularly strong Arctic polar vortex.

  •  The world boxing body (AIBA) has cancelled India's hosting rights of of the 2021 men's world boxing championship. Serbia's capital Belgrade has been given the hosting rights.
  • The world boxing body is under suspension from the International Olympic Committee and has been barred from organising the Tokyo Olympics competition.

UIDAI Allows CSCs to Offer Aadhaar Updation Facility

  • In a major relief to rural population, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has allowed the Common Service Centre, an SPV (special purpose vehicle) under the Ministry of IT and Electronics, to start the Aadhaar updation facility at 20,000 centres that operate as Banking Correspondents (BCs).
  • As per the Supreme Court order, the Aadhaar work through CSCs was discontinued in December 2018.
  • The CSCs had generated 20 crore Aadhaar cards, before it was discontinued.

Govt notifies International Financial Services Centres Authority

  • The finance ministry has established the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) through a notification. The body will be headquartered in Gandhinagar in Gujarat.
  • With this, the government has established a unified authority to regulate all financial services in International Financial Services Centres (IFSCs) in the country.

Officials Of Deemed University Covered Under Anti Graft Law: SC

  • The Supreme Court has held that the 'deemed to be university' would be covered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, since such a varsity and its officials performed no less or any different public duty than the one undertaken by regular university.
  • A bench of Justices N V Ramana, Mohan M Shantanagoudar and Ajay Rastogi said that the very object of anti-corruption law was not only to prevent the social evil of bribery and corruption but also to make it applicable to individuals who might conventionally not be considered public servants.
  • The top court termed as "incorrect" the Gujarat HC's judgement of February 2, 2018, wherein it had held "deemed University" is excluded from the ambit of the term "University" under the PC Act.

Dipankar Datta sworn in as CJ of Bombay High Court

  • Justice Dipankar Datta (55) of the Calcutta High Court was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. 
  • He was sworn in at Raj Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. They were all wearing masks and maintaining social distance at the ceremony that was streamed live online.
  • Justice Datta is the 45th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Michael Robinson dead at 61

  • Former Liverpool striker Michael Robinson has died at the age of 61.
  • The former Ireland international, who won a league, League Cup and European Cup treble with Liverpool in the 1983-84 season, also played for Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers before ending his career with Spain's Osasuna.

Ex-Andhra Bank Chief Suresh N Patel took over as Vigilance Commissioner

  • Former Andhra Bank chief Suresh N Patel took over as the vigilance commissioner in the anti-corruption watchdog CVC.
  • The post of vigilance commissioner has been lying vacant for over 10 months.
  • He was appointed the managing director and chief executive officer of Andhra Bank in November 2015 till his superannuation on December 31, 2017.

  • International Dance Day is a global celebration of dance, created by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO.
  • The event takes place every year on 29 April, which is the anniversary of the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), the creator of modern ballet.
  • The day strives to encourage participation and education in dance through events and festivals held on the date all over the world. UNESCO formally recognize ITI to be the creators and organizers of the event.

'Vidya Deevena' Scheme to Benefit 14 Lakh College Students in Andhra Pradesh

  • Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy launched 'Jagananna Vidya Deevena', a fee reimbursement scheme that would benefit 14 lakh college students in the State.
  • From the 2020–21 academic year, the fee reimbursement amount would be credited directly into the accounts of the mothers instead of that of the students in four instalments.

  • The Saudi G20 Presidency has welcome the launch of "Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator", a landmark, global and timely collaboration for the accelerated development, production and equitable access to new COVID-19 tools.
  • The ACT Accelerator initiative will be a global platform for action to enhance connections and leverage interdependencies for collective partnership, problem-solving, mobilizing and guiding investments, and driving equitable access for new COVID-19 diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines.
