HDFC Acquires 6.43% Stake In Reliance Capital

  • Mortgage lender HDFC has acquired 6.43 per cent stake in debt-trapped Reliance Capital by invoking pledged shares.
  • These shares were acquired pursuant to invocation of pledge by security trustee on behalf of the corporation, which was pledged against a loan given by the lender in its normal course of business, HDFC Ltd said in a regulatory filing.
  • Following this, the company acquired 25.27 crore shares of Rs 10 each, it said, adding that the total value of these shares are Rs 252 crore.

Chemicals, Petrochemicals Industry Becomes Top Exporting Sector For 1st time

  • India's chemical exports rose by 7 per cent to 2.68 lakh crore rupees during April-January period of the last fiscal, and became the top exporting sector in the country for the first time.
  • Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda congratulated the chemicals and petrochemicals industry on becoming the top exporting sector of the country for the first time.
  • Mr Gowda informed that during April 2019-January 2020, the export of chemicals grew by 7.43 per cent over the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. Total export of chemicals during this period reached 2.68 lakh crore rupees. This constitutes 14.35 per cent of the total exports.

Indian Overseas Bank Introduces Special Borrowing Programme For Self-Help Groups

  • Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), a major public sector bank (PSB), has launched a special borrowing programme for Self Help Groups (SHGs) to help them in difficult situations arising out of Coronavirus (COVID-19). 
  • Under this scheme, a member of SHG will be given a maximum loan of Rs 5,000 & the limit for the group has been fixed at Rs 1 lakh. 
  • This loan will be sanctioned with an interest rate of 9.4 % for 1 year.
  • It has been disbursed in 6 working days & the benefit can be availed till June 30, 2020.

ARCI in collaboration with Nanomechanics Inc., has developed NanoBlitz 3D

  • Scientists from International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology in collaboration with Nanomechanics Incorporated (Inc.,) have  developed NanoBlitz 3D, an advanced tool to map nano-mechanical properties of constituent phases, features or components of multiphase alloys, composites, multi-layered coatings & others.

Massive Asteroid 1998 OR2 To Zoom Past Earth On 29th April, Poses No Threat To The Planet

  • As per the details shared by the NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, a Massive Asteroid 1998 OR2 will zoom past Earth on 29th April 2020.
  • However it poses no threat to us or our planet confirmed the space agency. According to NASA, the asteroid 52768 (1998 OR2) is expected to be 1.8 to 4.1 kilometres wide and will fly by earth at a distance of 6.2 million kilometres.
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has also confirmed that during the fly-by, the massive asteroid will be travelling at an astonishing pace of 19,461 miles per hour.

Middle Distance Runner Khatun Handed 4-Year Ban For Dope Flunk

  • Middle distance runner Jhuma Khatun has been banned for four years by the Athletics Integrity Unit of the world governing body for testing positive for a banned substance -- steroid -- in a nearly two-year-old doping case which the NDTL had failed to detect.
  • The 31-year-old Khatun's dope sample collected during the National Inter-State Championships in June 2018 in Guwahati returned negative when it was tested by the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL).
  • Khatun had won a bronze each in 1500m and 5000m in that Guwahati meet

Global military expenditure sees largest annual increase in 2019 decade, US tops, India in 3rd position

  • According to a new report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the total global military expenditure rose to USD 1,917 billion in 2019, which represents an annual growth of 3.6% compared to 2018 & it is the largest annual growth in spending since 2010.
  • For the 1st time two Asian countries- China (2nd), India (3rd) have featured among the top military spenders after the United States- US(1st).
  • The  global military spending in 2019 represents 2.2% of the global gross domestic product (GDP) which equates to about USD 249 per person & the spending is 7.2% higher in 2019 than it was in 2010, which shows a trend that the military spending growth has accelerated in recent years.

  • Former Governor of Bihar and Tripura and veteran Congress leader Devanand Konwar died of old age ailments at his Guwahati residence.
  • He was governor of Bihar from July 24, 2009 to March 8, 2013 and of Tripura between March 25, 2013 and June 29, 2014.

RBI Extends Madhavan Menon's Term As Part-Time Chairman of CSB Bank

  • CSB Bank said the Reserve Bank of India has extended the term of appointment of Madhavan Menon as the part-time Chairman of the Bank till July 21, 2020.
  • The private sector bank, formerly known as The Catholic Syrian Bank, in a regulatory filing said, the extension is in terms of Section 10B (1A)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
  • Menon was appointed as part-time Chairman of CSB Bank for a period of one year with effect from April 22, 2019. He is Chairman and Managing Director of Thomas Cook (India) Ltd.

World Penguin Day 2020

  • World Penguin Day is celebrated on April 25, 2020. The annual northward migration of penguins is on or around April 25.
  • Penguins are a group of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere, especially in Antarctica.
  • It is celebrated as World Penguin Day to create awareness about the threat to the existence of these flightless birds.
  • The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC), a non governmental organisation mentions that this day coincides with the annual northern migration of Adelie penguins of Antarctica.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work 28 April

  • Recognizing the great challenge that governments, employers, workers and whole societies are facing worldwide to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work will focus on addressing the outbreak of infectious diseases at work, in particular, on the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Concern is growing over the continuing rise in COVID-19 infections in some parts of the world and the ability to sustain declining rates in others.
  • Governments, employers, workers and their organizations face enormous challenges as they try to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and protect safety and health at work. Beyond the immediate crisis, there are also concerns about resuming activity in a manner that sustains progress made in suppressing transmission.
  • The World Day for Safety and Health at Work will aim to stimulate national tripartite dialogue on safety and health at work.

Coronavirus Vaccine Likely By September, Says Pune's Serum Institute

  • Serum Institute of India will be manufacturing Oxford University's coronavirus vaccine in anticipation of clinical trials succeeding by September-October, 2020 in the UK.
  • Vaccine major Serum Institute of India said it plans to start production of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University.
  • The Pune-based company has partnered with Oxford University as one of the seven global institutions manufacturing the vaccine.
