India attends Saarc health ministers conference hosted by Pakistan

  • India on Thursday participated in a video conference of Saarc health ministers hosted by Pakistan to promote greater regional cooperation to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India was represented at the conference by Director General of Health Services who was assisted by experts from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

WHO Warns Against Coronavirus Immunity Passports

  • The World Health Organization has warned against issuing "immunity passports" to people who have recovered from Covid-19, as there is no evidence that they will be protected from a second infection.
  • The idea of issuing some form of certificates to people who have been sick with the virus – on the assumption they would be immune to reinfection – has been gaining ground in many places, including the UK, as authorities cast around for ways out of socially and economically devastating lockdowns.

Government Freezes DA & DR For 1.1 Crore Employees & Pensioners

  • The Department of Expenditure, under the finance ministry has stated that the central government has frozen the Dearness Allowance (DA) & Dearness Relief (DR), an inflation-linked allowance to its 1.1 crore employees & pensioners respectively due from January 1, 2020 to combat the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.
  • The government had announced a 4% increase in DA for its 50 lakh employees and 61 lakh pensioners to 21% effective from January 1, 2020, which was to cost Rs 27,100 crore in the current financial year 2020-21.
  • It is estimated that the central government will be able to save Rs 37, 530 crore in the current financial year & 2021-22. The states will likely implement the central government order on DA and DR & they will save Rs 82, 566 crore, which totally save  Rs 1.20 lakh crore.

Bajaj Allianz launches 'BAGIC GOQii Co-pay Option' Under Regulatory Sandbox

  • Bajaj Allianz General Insurance, along with smart-tech enabled preventive healthcare platform GOQii has launched a new add-on health cover called 'BAGIC GOQii Co-pay Option' under regulatory sandbox approval received from the IRDAI, that would reward customers with a healthy lifestyle. 
  • This option will be an add-on cover which can be opted by the holders of company's existing health insurance policy — Health Ensure. The objective behind this product is to reward customers who are adopting a healthy lifestyle in the form of co-pay deduction in their health insurance policy. 

SIDBI Launches Special Liquidity Scheme For MSMEs

  • The Small Industries Development Bank of India launched a special liquidity scheme for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through banks including Small Finance Banks (SFBs), Non-Banking Financial Companies including fintech NBFCs and Microfinance Institutions (MFIs).
  • The scheme would provide financial support to banks, NBFCs and MFIs by way of term loans to ensure operational continuity and promote onward lending to MSMEs.

Cricket To Consider Legalised Ball-Tampering In Wake Of Coronavirus

  • Coronavirus may force the busting of one of cricket's greatest taboos, as authorities consider the possibility of allowing the use of artificial substances to help polish the red ball under the supervision of umpires in long-form matches, in order to end the need for player to do so with saliva.
  • The problem posed by the use of saliva to polish the ball is understood to be among the items raised by the ICC's medical committee to be addressed before cricket can resume, meaning that lateral thinking is required to allow bowlers and teams to continue to find effective ways to shine the ball to help encourage conventional or reverse swing.

World Bank Approves Rs 585 Cr For Himachal Pradesh State Roads Transformation Project

  • The World Bank has approved 82 million US dollars (585 crore rupees)  for the Himachal Pradesh State Roads Transformation Project (HPSRTP) for upgradation of major roads and modernization of the Public Works Department in the state. 
  • It may be recalled that the work of construction and maintenance of road projects in the State has been adversely affected due to the lockdown in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. Himachal Pradesh Chief minister Jairam Thakur said, efforts should be made to fix renewed targets taking a realistic view of the situation. He said that local labour must be optimally utilized so that work on ongoing projects could be expedited.

Government Declares Banking Industry As Public Utility Service Till October 21

  • Government has declared banking industry as a public utility service for six months till October 21, 2020 under the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act.
  • Bringing banking services under the provisions of this Act means that the banking sector would not see any strikes by employees or officers during the operation of the law starting from April 21, 2020.
  • In a circular, Department of Financial Services said the labour and employment ministry through a notification has declared "banking industry as a public utility service" for six months.

Pakistan's Navy Successfully Test-Fires Anti-Ship Missiles

  • The Pakistani Navy successfully test-fired a series of anti-ship missiles in the North Arabian Sea on April 25, 2020. The announcement was made by Pakistan Navy spokesperson Rear Admiral Arshid Javed.
  • The anti-ship missiles were fired successfully at the sea level by warships and aircraft. The Pakistan Navy did not provide any further details about the test.

World Day Of Laboratory Animals 2020

  • The World Day of Laboratory Animals has been observed annually on April 24th with the associated "Lab Animal Week" (20th-26th April) since 1979 as a movement to end the sufferings of the animals that are used for testing in the laboratories around the world and replace them with the advanced scientific non-animal techniques. 
  • This World Day for Animals in Laboratories was established by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to educate the public and Governments about the animal tests and the alternatives for the past 40 years.
  • The product testing required the testing to be done on two mammal species, a rodent species and a non-rodent species during the testing the animals are burnt, blinded, scalded, poisoned, mutilated and starved.

J&K's Panchayats Bag Three National Award For Their Outstanding Contribution

  • Jammu and Kashmir UT has bagged three national awards under separate categories for outstanding contribution by its Panchayati Raj Institutions towards socio-economic development of Gram Panchayats, adopting child-friendly practices and preparing Gram Panchayat Development Plans at the panchayat level. 
  • The awards were given under three different categories viz. Nanaji Deshmukh Rashtriya Gaurav Gram Sabha Puraskar (NDRGGSP), Gram Panchayat Development Plans (GPDP) Award, Child-friendly Gram Panchayat Award by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India to recognize the efforts and work done by the best performing panchayats all over the country.

Government Reconstitutes National Shipping Board

  • The government has approved reconstitution of the National Shipping Board to be headed by former Director General of Shipping Malini Shankar.
  •  The National Shipping Board (NSB) is the highest advisory body on matters related to Indian shipping including the development there of and on such other matters arising out of the Merchant Shipping Act.
  • The shipping ministry has approved reconstitution of the 16-member NSB, which will be headed by former Director General of Shipping Malini Shankar, as per a communication from the ministry to the DG Shipping.

NAFED To Distribute About 6 Lakh Metric Tonne Pulses Under PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana

  • A massive operation for transport and milling of pulses is underway in the country to distribute one kilogram of pulses to about twenty crore households for three months under the Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. 
  • This operation entails lifting of un-milled pulses from the godowns, getting the pulses cleaned and then reaching them to the states for distribution. Under the scheme, NAFED will distribute around 5.88 lakh metric tonnes pulses to about 20 crore National Food Security Act households through ration shops for three months.
