Pandemic To Bring Asia's 2020 Growth To Halt For 1st Time In 60 Years: IMF
Asia's economic growth this year will grind to a halt for the first time in 60 years, as the coronavirus crisis takes an "unprecedented" toll on the region's service sector and major export destinations, the International Monetary Fund said.
Policymakers must offer targeted support to households and firms hardest-hit by travel bans, social distancing policies and other measures aimed at containing the pandemic, said Changyong Rhee, director of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department.
North Korean Defector Wins In Gangnam, South Korea's Ritziest Seat
Thae Yong-ho has become the first ever North Korean defector to win a constituency seat in South Korea.
Mr Thae was once North Korea's deputy ambassador to the UK, but defected in 2016 with his family, becoming the highest-ranking North Korean official to ever do so.
He was running as the opposition United Future Party's main candidate in the affluent district of Gangnam of Seoul.
He won by 58.4% and was seen crying after his victory was announced.
Centre Launches SAHYO App To Help Area-Specific Strategies, Decisions In COVID-19 Outbreak
The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, developed mobile application SAHYO, an Integrated Geospatial Platform out of available geospatial datasets, standards-based services, and analytic tools. The mobile application and the website prepared and managed by the Survey of India (SoI).
The SAHYO aims to help decision making during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It will aid devising area-specific strategies to handle the socio-economic impact in the recovery phase.
The platform will strengthen the public health delivery system of the Central and State Governments.
CeNS Develops Portable Sensor To Detect Heavy Metal Ions In Water
Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) has developed a compact solid-state sensor that can detect the heavy metal ions in water. It was developed by a team of researchers led by Dr. Pralay K. Santra at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences.
Heavy metal ions like mercury, lead, and cadmium show severe potential threats to living beings. These metal ions can easily be accumulated in the human body. It cannot be detoxified by any chemical or biological processes.
ICAR Developed Pusa Decontamination And Sanitizing Tunnel
Pusa Decontamination and Sanitizing Tunnel are developed by the Division of Agricultural Engineering, Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
The tunnel was inaugurated by the Union Minister Kailash Choudhary on 16 April in New Delhi.
The sanitization protocol of the tunnel included handwashing with foot-operated soap and water dispenser and fogging in a sanitizing tunnel for 20 seconds.
In the tunnel, Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QAC) are used at a concentration of 0.045%, as per the recommendation of the Health Department.

Spitting In Public Now An Offence Under Disaster Management Act: MHA
Spitting in public without caring two hoots for regulations may not be so easy now with the Union Home Ministry making the act a punishable offence under the strict Disaster Management Act in its revised guidelines for lockdown issued to contain COVID-19. The guidelines issued by the ministry also make wearing of face masks in public places mandatory.
Spitting in public is an offence under municipal laws in various cities, but it is hardly by the people in the country.
Bihar, Jharkhand, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Haryana, Nagaland and Assam have already issued orders on the ban of use of smokeless tobacco products and spitting in public places amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
Under the consolidated revised guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in the wake of the extension of lockdown till May 3, 2020 spitting has been made punishable with a fine under Section 51 (b) of the Disaster Management Act.

N.Korea Test Fires Multiple Short-Range Anti-Ship Missiles
North Korea launched multiple short-range anti-ship cruise missiles into the sea and Sukhoi jets fired air-to-surface missiles as part of its ongoing military exercises, South Korea's military said.
The missile tests came on the eve of a national holiday in North Korea to celebrate the birthday of Kim Il Sung, the founder of the country and grandfather of the current leader, Kim Jong Un.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan Army once again violated ceasefire in Qasba and Kirni sectors of Poonch district.
Pak Army intiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and shelling with mortars along Line of Control in Qasba and Kirni sectors. The official said, Indian troops guarding the fence are retaliating befittingly. The exchange of fire continued when reports last came in.
There are no reports of loss of any life and damage to property from Indian side as yet, added the PRO.

Maha Freedom fighter R V Bhuskute dies
Freedom fighter R V Bhuskute, who had participated in the Quit India Movement, died of prolonged illness in Maharashtra's Raigadh district.
He was 94 and is survived by his wife, three sons and three daughters.
Bhuskute, who had participated in the Quit India Movement, wrote several books on land laws and worked for the release and rehabilitation of bonded labourers in tribal areas of the state.

IMF To Double Its Emergency Financial Assistance To Countries Combating COVID-19 Pandemic
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) proposed to release its full $1 trillion lending capacity to support countries that battle the COVID-19 outbreak. The IMF described the COVID-19 pandemic as a crisis like no other crisis ever. The announcement was made by the IMF head Kristalina Georgieva.
In the first-ever virtual annual spring meeting of the IMF and the World Bank in Washington, the IMF announced its plans to double emergency financial assistance. The IMF Board has already approved debt relief for 25 of its poorest members due to the COVID-19 crisis. The G20 Finance ministers showed unanimous support for the Fund to raise more capacity for concessional funding for poor countries.
DRDOs PPE Testing Facility Shifted From DRDE Gwalior to INMAS Delhi
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) shifted its testing facility from Defence Research Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior to Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS), New Delhi. The move is to overcome the time delays and to speed up delivery of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and masks.
The DRDE, Gwalior has stood at the forefront in fighting COVID-19. It has now been tasked to do the testing of masks only received by HLL Lifecare Limited from foreign countries before it is distributed to various agencies.
