Raspberry Pi-powered Ventilator To Be Tested In Colombia
A team in Colombia is to test a ventilator made with a Raspberry Pi computer and easy-to-source parts.
The design and computer code were posted online in March 2020 by a man in California, who had no prior experience at creating medical equipment.
Marco Mascorro, a robotics engineer, said he built the ventilator because knew the machines were in high demand to treat Covid-19.
His post prompted a flood of feedback from healthcare workers.
He has used the advice to make improvements.
Germany Slowly Eases Lockdown Measures
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced plans to slowly ease restrictions brought in to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
Social distancing rules will stay in place until at least 3 May, 2020 with Ms Merkel also recommending the use of face masks in shops and on public transport.
But as of next week (from March 20) shops under a certain size could open their doors.
Schools will gradually start to reopen from 4 May, 2020.
Russian Arms Firm To Donate $2 Million To PM CARES Fund
The donation would be a first as India has so far not taken funds from foreign state-run entities
In a first such donation of its kind, Russia's State-owned defence exports company Rosoboronexport has committed $2million (15.3 crore) to the newly set up 'PM CARES Fund'. The proposed donation to the fund that has been set up specially to assist the government's efforts in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, marks a significant shift in India's policy on accepting contributions from foreign government owned companies.
Southwest Monsoon To Be Normal This Year, Predicts IMD
Southwest monsoon will be normal this year (2020), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its forecast for the four-month rainfall season in the country.
IMD Director General M Mohapatra said the Long Period Average (LPA) of monsoon will be 100 per cent which falls in the "normal" category.

Google Journalism Emergency Relief Fund Launched, Following Facebook
Google will launch an emergency fund to help local news outlets struggling to maintain operations in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
The internet giant gave no specific figure for its fund, but said it would offer grants ranging from the "low thousands of dollars" for the smallest operations to "low tens of thousands for larger newsrooms."
The move comes with the media sector facing deep cutbacks resulting from the global consumer lockdown, an intense economic slump and a retrenchment in advertising revenues that many news outlets depend on.
10.2 lakh Refunds Worth Rs 4,250 Crore Issued In A Week By CBDT
In pursuance to the Government's decision vide Press Note on 8th April 2020 to issue pending income tax refunds up to Rs 5 lakh in order to help taxpayers in a COVID-19 pandemic situations, the Central Board of Direct taxes (CBDT) has already issued over 10.2 lakh refunds totalling to around Rs. 4,250 crore as on 14th April 2020. These refunds are over and above the 2.50 crore refunds already issued in FY 19-20 till 31st March 2020 totalling Rs 1.84 lakh crore.
The CBDT further said that about 1.75 lakh more refunds are in the process of issuance. These refunds would get credited directly to the taxpayer bank account in 5-7 business days from issuance.

The Centre's mobile app, Aarogya Setu, developed for tracking COVID-19 patients, has become the world's fastest app to reach 50 million downloads in just 13 days, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation on April 14 appealed to people to download this app.
"Telephone took 75 years to reach 50 million users, radio 38 yrs, television 13 yrs, Internet 4 yrs, Facebook 19 months, Pokemon Go 19 days. AarogyaSetu, India's app to fight COVID-19 has reached 50 mn users in just 13 days-fastest ever globally for an App," Mr. Kant said in his tweet.

India To Host The 2020 Asian Boxing Championships
India will host the 2020 edition of the Asian Boxing Championships, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announced.
The national federation president Ajay Singh shared the news with the stakeholders during their review meeting while later taking to Twitter for the public announcement.

The Tour de France has been officially postponed to 29 August, 2020 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, and will finish on 20 September, the organiser, Amaury Sport Organisation confirmed.

The government decision to divide all districts across the country into hotspots, non hotspots and green zones will help in managing the Covid-19 pandemic as well as partial opening up of economic activities during the extended period of the nationwide lockdown. This would help in management of hotspots and spread of pandemic.
The health and family welfare ministry, which has come out with a new set of guidelines for the second phase of lockdown till May 3, 2020 has identified 170 hotspot districts, 207 non-hotspot districts reporting cases and 359 green zone districts not reporting any cases across the country.

Agricultural and allied activities including dairy, fisheries as well as tea, coffee and rubber plantation are allowed to function in the second phase of the COVID-19 lockdown the government said issuing fresh guidelines.
Operations of tea, coffee and rubber plantations are allowed with maximum 50 per cent workers. Processing, packaging, sale and marketing of these commodities as well as cashew have been allowed with maximum 50 per cent workers.
UPSC Chairman, Members To Forego 30 Per Cent Of Basic Pay For 1 Year
The chairman and members of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), that conducts civil services examination to select country's bureaucrats and diplomats among others, have decided to forego 30 per cent of their basic pay for one year to aid the government's fight against coronavirus. The commission reviewed the harm caused to the national economy by the coronavirus pandemic in a special meeting held to review the current situation.
"Recognising the need to conserve financial resources at the national level, the chairman and members of the UPSC have decided to voluntarily forego 30 per cent of the basic pay received by them from the Commission for a period of one year, with effect from April 2020," the communique issued by the Personnel Ministry.

Bernard Arnault, Chairman and CEO of luxury magnate LVMH (LVMHF), moved up the list as the third-wealthiest person with $76 billion fortune. At $67.5 billion, Warren Buffett's fortune landed at fourth place.

'Bat Coronavirus' Strain Found In Two Species Of Bats In India: ICMR-NIV Study
In a first, researchers in the country have found pathogenic coronaviruses in two species of Indian bats. A recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), found strains of coronaviruses, different from the novel coronavirus, in two bat species – the Indian Flying Fox and Rousettus (old world fruit bats).
The study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research, states that there is no evidence to suggest that the bat coronaviruses can be transmitted to humans.

A team of researchers of IIT Guwahati has developed affordable antimicrobial (antiviral/antibacterial) spray-based coating for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and 3D printed Ear Guard for comfortable use of face masks by healthcare workers.
The Institute has been working to fight against COVID-19 pandemic. The concepts have been developed by Dr. Biman B. Mandal, Professor, Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, IIT Guwahati, along with his PhD scholars, Bibhas K. Bhunia and Ashutosh Bandyopadhyay.
