Europe Now the Epicenter of the Coronavirus Pandemic

  • As per World Health Organization officials, Europe has become the new epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic as cases in China slow and the deadly coronavirus runs through Italy and nearby countries.
  • More cases are now being reported (in Europe) every day than were reported in China at the height of its epidemic.
  • Italy currently has the most cases outside of China with at least 15,113 infections, followed by Spain at 4,334, Germany at 3,156 and France at 2,882, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Other countries in Europe are seeing cases soar. Switzerland currently has 1,125 cases, followed by Sweden at 809, the Netherlands at 804 and Denmark at 788.

Bill Gates Quits Microsoft Board

  • Microsoft announced that co-founder Bill Gates left its board of directors to devote more time to philanthropy.
  • Gates served as chairman of Microsoft's board of directors until early in 2014 and has now stepped away entirely.
  • Microsoft would continue to benefit from Gates' "technical passion and advice" in his continuing role as a technical advisor.

India Gained C Grade, no Country Made up to A Grade: Animal Protection Index 2020

  • World Animal Protection released the 2nd edition of global Animal Protection Index (API) 2020, where India gained C grade (also in 1st edition in 2014) with other 8 countries which indicates India is one of the better-performing countries. Tragically no country gained A grade.
  • Gist about API 2020
  • It aims to display whether countries are doing well & where they lack on animal welfare policy and legislation, so they could take steps to improve.
  • It helps the countries to have good animal welfare practices such as keeping animals clean, healthy and with sufficient space to exhibit natural behaviours.
  • It assesses the animal welfare policies and legislation of 50 countries and ranks them from A (highest score) to G (lowest score) with 10 indicators, grouped into 4 goals namely;
  • Recognition of animal sentience and prohibition of animal suffering
  • Presence of animal welfare legislation
  • Establishment of supportive government bodies
  • Support for international animal welfare standards

Bharti Airtel Takes 10% Stake in Spectacom Global Ltd

  • Bharti Airtel Limited (also known as Airtel), an Indian global telecommunications services company, acquired a 10 % equity stake in fitness start-up Spectacom Global Pvt Ltd, under its 'Airtel Startup Accelerator Program', which focuses on supporting the growth of early-stage Indian startups. However, the company did not reveal how much the deal is worth.
  • With this acquisition, Spectacom becomes the 2nd firm to join the Airtel Start-up Accelerator Program after Bengaluru-based Vahan.
  • Under the deal, Airtel will jointly work with Spectacom to help boost awareness and doption of the latter's health and fitness platform and encourage common man to handle the mental issues.
  • Due to the widespread proliferation of mobile Internet in India, this partnership will help Spectacom to create training and nutrition videos as well as live sports events that Airtel will deliver through its platforms Airtel Xstream and Wynk Music.

YES Bank Gets New MD and CEO

  • The government appointed former Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Managing Director (MD) of SBI Prashant Kumar as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the former Punjab National Bank (PNB) MD Sunil Mehta as Non-Executive Chairman, Mahesh Krishnamurthy and Atul Bheda as non-executive directors of the reconstructed board of Yes Bank.
  • State Bank of India (SBI), which has a 49 % stake in Yes Bank, will nominate 2 directors & Reserve Bank could appoint one or more additional directors.
  • Any investor other than SBI with 15% voting rights can nominate 1 director. Until an alternate board is constituted board members will have a term of 1 year.

Govt. Hikes Excise Duty on Fuel to Shore up Revenue

  • The NDA government raised excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs. 3 per litre, adding to the windfall gains it stands to reap from a slump in global crude oil prices and giving itself room to stimulate a slowing economy that's now bracing for fallout of the coronavirus. The move is expected to result in additional revenue of more than Rs. 40,000 crore to the government.

Sharath Kamal Clinches Oman Open

  • Ace Indian paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal ended his decade long wait for a title, producing a sensational performance to win the ITTF Challenger Plus Oman Open. Despite being a game down, the 37-year-old Indian recovered well to outclass top seeded Marcos Freitas of Portugal 6-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-9, 3-11, 17-15 in the summit clash. It was in 2010 when Sharath had bagged his last title at Egypt Open. Since then he made two semi-final appearances -- Morocco Open in 2011 and India Open in 2017 -- but couldn't manage to get through.

Nita Ambani, Serena Williams & Simone Biles in Influential Women in Sports List 2020

  • Sports business network, iSportconnect released the 'Influential Women in Sport' list for 2020, which named Nita Ambani, Serena Williams and Simone Biles along with 7 other women.
  • Nita Ambani led her Mumbai Indians franchise to become the most successful in IPL history and is in many sports projects across different sports in the country.
  • Tennis player, Serena Williams's overall impact both on the court, (the greatest female player of all times), & as a businesswoman.
  • Gymnast Simone Biles currently (as in 2020) one of the greatest athletes in the world & an ever-growing voice for women in sport.
  • Footballer Megan Rapinoe is never afraid to speak her mind and talk about social issues and has become a prominent figure in women's sport.

Ordinance for Recovery of Damage to Public Property during Violent Protests

  • The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet passed the 'Recovery of Damage to Public Properties Ordinance 2020' for recovery of losses due to damage to public property during violent protests.
  • The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting headed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
  • Cabinet has approved the Uttar Pradesh Recovery of Damages to Public and Private Property Ordinance, 2020 for effective prevention of loss of public property in the state.
  • As many as 15 people had died in the violence that took place across Uttar Pradesh during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in December 2019.
  • Adityanath had earlier said that the damages in the violence will be recovered from the rioters.

Narendra Modi Proposes SAARC Fund to Tackle Coronavirus

  • Making a strong pitch for SAARC nations to jointly combat coronavirus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday proposed setting up a COVID-19 emergency fund with India committing USD 10 million initially for it, and asserted that the best way to deal with the pandemic was by coming together, and not growing apart. Apart from Modi, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Nepalese Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, Bhutanese premier Lotay Tshering, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Special Assistant to Pakistani Prime Minister on Health Zafar Mirza, participated in the video conference.
  • The underlying message of the video conference was unitedly taking on the pandemic, but Pakistan used the occasion to raise Kashmir, with Mirza calling for the "lockdown" to be eased in Jammu and Kashmir to deal with the coronavirus threat.

Ropax Ferry Service between Mumbai and Mandwa

  • A roll on-roll off cum passenger ferry service, also called 'Ropax', between Mumbai and Mandwa near Alibaug, was launched in the presence of Union Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh Mandaviya and Maharashtra port and maritime board officials.
  • The launch ceremony was a low-key one due to state government restrictions on such mass gatherings given the novel coronavirus outbreak.
  • The vessel, built in Greece, can carry 200 cars and 1,000 passengers, and is capable of plying even during monsoon.
  • While Mumbai Port Trust built the jetty facilities at Ferry Wharf in the metropolis at the cost of Rs. 31 crore, the ropax jetty and terminal at Mandwa has been built by Maharashtra Maritime Board at the cost of Rs. 135 crore.

Poet Puthussery Ramachandran Passes Away

  • Malayalam poet, scholar and teacher Puthussery Ramachandran passed away after a brief illness. He was 92.
  • A scholar of Dravidian linguistics and a professor of Malayalam for more than 30 years, Dr. Ramachandran was a recipient of several awards.
  • He was the honorary director of the International Centre for Kerala Studies, University of Kerala.
  • Dr. Ramachandran played a major role in the preparation of the elaborate document which culminated in the recognition of Malayalam as a classical language by the Central government in 2013.
  • Dr. Ramachandran is credited with publishing the complete text of Kannassa Ramayanam, the first complete Ramayana in Malayalam, with notes and interpretations.
  • The Sahitya Akademi honoured him with its translation award in 2005 and Bhasha Samman in 2014. In 2009, he was conferred the fellowship of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi.

Government Appoints Justice B. L. Bhat as Officiating Chairman of NCLAT

  • The government appointed Justice Bansi Lal Bhat as the officiating chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). NCLAT Chairperson Justice Sudhansu Jyoti Mukhopadhaya retired on 13th March.
  • The appointment of Justice Bhat, a former judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, is for a period of three months with effect from 15.03.2020 or until a regular Chairperson is appointed or until further orders, whichever is earliest.
  • In a separate notification, the government appointed Justice Anant Bijay Singh as judicial member and Shreesha Merla and Alok Srivastava as technical members of the appellate tribunal.
  • Justice Bhat had joined NCLAT as a judicial member on October 17, 2017.

Wings India 2020, Civil Aviation Exhibition, Airshow

  • The four-day civil aviation business exhibition and air show, Wings India 2020 was held from 12th March to 15th March.
  • The biennial event was organised by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) along with Ministry of Civil Aviation and Airports Authority of India at the Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad.
  • The biennial event had dazzling aerobatics performances twice a day by two teams — Sarang, the helicopter aerobatics team of Indian Air Force and Global Stars team of British pilots on fixed wing aircrafts.
  • The event also hosted conferences between various company heads and a CEO's forum. In the last edition of the event, about 700 delegates participated from across the world.

First Regional Edition of Divya Kala Shakti Event Held in Chennai

  • First regional edition of "Divya Kala Shakti Event" (Witnessing the Abilities in Disabilities) held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN). Shri Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of TN witnessed the performances and V. Saroja, Minister of Social Welfare and Nutritious Noon Meal programme and senior officers participated in the occasion.
  • The event was organised by the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD), in association with the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • The Divya Kala Shakti event aimed to provide a platform for the disabled to exhibit their talents.
  • Divya Kala event brought 98 children and youth with various disabilities, including vision and hearing impairment, locomotor disabilities, autism spectrum disorders and other intellectual disabilities.
  • The participants were from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Puducherry.
  • Divyangjan performed dance, music, instrumental in classic, folk and modern style. The event also held yoga and acrobatics for the first time.

World Consumer Rights Day 2020

  • World Consumer Rights Day is observed annually on March 15 in over 120 countries across the globe.
  • Each year there is a specific theme to celebrate the World Consumer Rights Day which addresses different concerns regarding all consumers. According to the Consumers International organisation "the theme for World Consumer Rights Day 2020, is 'The Sustainable Consumer'. The campaign discussed the need for sustainable consumption globally, as well as highlighted the important role that consumer rights and protection can play.
  • The idea of World Consumer Rights Day was inspired by President John F Kennedy. On March 15 1962, President John F Kennedy sent a special message to the US Congress formally addressing the issue of consumer rights. He was the first world leader to do so.
  • On April 9, 1985, the United Nations approved the general guidelines for consumer protection. In the year 1983, the first celebration of World Consumer Rights Day was marked. Since then, this day (World Consumer Rights Day) is celebrated annually on March 15.

Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Woman Journalist

  • Arfa Khanum Sherwani of The Wire and Bengaluru-based freelancer Rohini Mohan were jointly given this year's Chameli Devi Jain Award for outstanding woman journalist.
  • Rukmini S, an independent data-journalist from Chennai, received honourable mention.
  • The annual award which recognises social concern, dedication, courage and compassion received over 40 entries from all over India representing the print, broadcast and online media.
  • The jury comprised political scientist Zoya Hasan and journalists Sreenivasan Jain and Manoj Mitta.
  • While Sherwani was chosen for her reporting from conflict situations in Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh, the jury felt that Mohan's reportage on the NRC exercise in Assam set a new benchmark for investigative journalism.

Vivad se Vishwas' Bill Gets Upper House Nod

  • The Rajya Sabha passed the Direct Tax 'Vivad Se Vishwas' (dispute to trust) Bill that aims to resolve more than 483,000 legacy disputes stuck in various tribunals involving direct taxes amounting to Rs. 9.32 lakh crore. The scheme, however, excludes litigations above Rs. 5 crore to check evasion.
  • Replying to the debate on the bill in the House, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that taxpayers can avail the full benefit of the scheme by March 31 and till June 30 by paying some additional amount. The government will notify the last date for the scheme later.

IIT Madras, Delhi, Mumbai Lead Race for Patents in 2019-20

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras emerged as the country's leading technical institution in creating new knowledge, as 186 patents were filed in the academic year 2019-20. The IITs of Delhi and Mumbai are ranked next, with 152 and 135 patents, respectively.
  • IIT-Kanpur has increased its tally of patents from 47 in 2018-19 to 78 in 2019-20. The number of patents registered at IIT in Roorkee and Guwahati was 42 and 26, respectively. While the older and established IITs have been improving their patents score,the newer ones are lagging behind.
  • The IITs at Mandi and Ropar, which are comparatively much younger institutions, registered five and seven patents, respectively, but did better than many other peers.
  • Top policymakers in the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry are examining the latest data to find ways in which research and innovation in the country's best technical institutions can receive a boost.
