Norway Wins Triathlon GLod at Tokyo Olympics

  • Great Britain's Alex Yee won silver in a punishing men's triathlon at the Tokyo Olympics as Kristian Blummenfelt of Norway claimed gold.
  • Yee, making his Games debut, led for much of the 10 km run before Kristtian Blummenfelt produced a stunning breakaway in 27C heat and high humidity.
  • New Zealand's Hayden Wilde took bronze, with Briton Jonny Brownlee fifth.
  • Kristtian Blummenfelt is the first Norwegian to win a medal at the Tokyo Games, taking victory in 1 hour, 45 minutes and 4 seconds.

Chanu Opens India's Medal Tally

  • Mirabai Chanu won India's first medal in the Tokyo Olympics 2021, claiming silver in the women's 49 kg weightlifting. Mirabai had a total lift of 202 kg – 87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk as she finished second behind China's Hou Zihui 210 kg (94 & 116) who set an Olympic record in snatch.

Indian Men's Team Knocks out Kazakhstan, Sets up QF against Korea

  • The Indian men's archery team of Pravin Jadhav, Atanu Das and Tarundeep Rai downed Kazakhstan 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal clash against heavyweights Korea at the Tokyo Olympics.
  • The Indians were strong, especially Atanu Das who drilled in six perfect 10s to play a crucial role in team's win at the Yumenoshima Park.
  • The Kazakhstan troika of Denis Gankin, Ilfat Abdullin, Sanzhar Mussayev showed flashes of brilliance. They took the third set with one point margin.
  • Das made all the difference by hitting six perfect 10s including two Xs to make up for some inconsistent show by the Army duo of Rai and Jadhav.

History-maker Bhavani Devi Crashes Out

  • India's lone representative at fencing CA Bhavani Devi lost the round of 32 match against France's Manon Brunet in women's individual sabre at Makuhari Messe B Hall Yellow Piste. Manon Brunet dominated Bhavani over the two halves as she defeated the Indian by 15-7 and marched into the round of 16.

Mary Kom Enters Olympic Pre-quarters

  • Six-time world champion Mary Kom (51 kg) powered into the Olympics' pre-quarterfinals after a tactical victory over Dominican Republic's Miguelina Hernandez Garcia but Manish Kaushik's (63 kg) Games debut ended in disappointment following a hard-fought opening-round loss.

Sandesh Jhingan Named AIFF Men's Footballer of Year

  • Senior India defender, Sandesh Jhingan was named the AIFF men's Footballer of the Year 2020-21 season. It is the first time that the towering central defender has received the AIFF Player of the Year award, having won the Emerging Player of the Year Award in 2014.
  • Jhingan made his senior national team debut in 2015 in Guwahati and has since gone on to make 40 appearances for the Blue Tigers, scoring four goals.
  • He was part of the Indian sides that lifted the Intercontinental Cup in 2018 and played out a memorable draw at the home of the Asian champions Qatar in 2019.
  • Jhingan has captained the senior team on five occasions, the most recent being the international friendly against Oman in Dubai in March. He was conferred with the prestigious Arjuna Award last year.

Madhya Pradesh Para Shooter Rubina Francis Bags gold at Peru Event

  • Madhya Pradesh shooter, Rubina Francis has set a world record at the ongoing Para Sport Cup in Peru. She has won gold in the 10-metre air pistol para-event for women. Scoring 238.1 points, she went past the world record of Aysegul Pehlivanlar of Turkey. This win also secured her the quota for India at the Tokyo Summer Paralympics.
  • Over the years, she has earned more than 15 medals from national and international events. Presently, Rubina is training under the guidance of Jaspal Rana, former shooter and coach of the Junior Indian Pistol Shooting Team.

Aman Gulia and Sagar Jaglan India's New World Cadet Champions

  • Young wrestlers Aman Gulia and Sagar Jaglan emerged as the new world champions in their respective categories as India dished out an impressive show on the second day of the Cadet World Championship 2021 at Budapest, Hungary. Gulia emerged the winner with a convincing 5-2 win over American Luke Joseph Lilledahl in a 48 kg final while Jaglan blanked James Mockler Rowley 4-0 in the 80 kg summit clash.

UN, IOC Release Stamps to Commemorate Tokyo Olympics

  • The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) has in partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) created a series of stamps to commemorate the Tokyo Olympic Games and to highlight sport's contribution to peace around the world.
  • The six stamp sheets feature the Olympic sports of sailing, baseball, judo, diving, equestrian and golf, the IOC informed.

Tokyo 2020: Guinea Withdraws on Eve of Games

  • The government of Guinea has decided not to send any of its athletes to the Tokyo Olympics over Covid-19 fears.
  • The Guinean delegation was due to include a total of five competitors - one each in athletics, judo and wrestling while two were set for the athletics programme
  • "Due to the rise in cases of Covid-19 variants the government out of concern for the health of the Guinean athletes, has regretfully decided to cancel their participation", wrote the Minister of Sport, Sanoussy Bantama Sow, in a short statement.
  • This is the first case of an entire team being withdrawn from the delayed Games in Tokyo.

Brisbane Picked to Host 2032 Olympics without a Rival Bid

  • Brisbane was picked to host the 2032 Olympics, the inevitable winner of a one-city race steered by the IOC to avoid rival bids.
  • The Games will go back to Australia 32 years after the popular 2000 Sydney Olympics. Melbourne hosted in 1956.
  • Brisbane follows 2028 host Los Angeles in getting 11 years to prepare for hosting the Games. Paris will host in 2024.
