US Congress Approves to Limit Trump's War Powers against Iran

  • The United States House of Representatives approved a War Powers Resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump's ability to wage war against Iran.
  • The passage of the resolution was yet another rebuke of the President over his decision to order the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in January 2020 amid escalating tensions with Tehran.
  • The Senate voted 55 to 45 - with eight Republicans joining Democrats on February 13 - to approve the resolution. The House action sends the measure to Trump, who has threatened to veto it. A two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate would be needed to override a veto.

India 2nd Largest Arms Importer in 2015-19

  • In accordance with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's (SIPRI) annual report titled "Trends in international arms transfers, 2019" released in 2020, India is the world's second largest arms importer during 2015-19 with its global share of 9.2% after Saudi Arabia, who has topped the ranking with global share of 12%. On the other hand, India ranked 23rd in terms of world's largest arms exporters with global share of 0.2% and its main clients being Myanmar (46%), Sri Lanka (25%), and Mauritius (14%). United States (US) topped the list in this section with a share of 36%.
  • On the global front, the volume of international transfers of major arms in 2015–19 has increased by 5% as compared to 2010–14.
  • Largest suppliers of arms to India: Russia is largest supplier of arms to India; however, share of weapons purchased has declined from 72% to 56% during 2015-19, which accounted 25% of total Russian arms exports. Contrarily, Israel and France's share increased, by 175% and 715% respectively, which have become second and third largest suppliers to India during 2015-19.

Bombardier CEO Alain Bellemare to Step Down

  • Canada's Bombardier Inc said that Chief Executive Officer Alain Bellemare would step down and be replaced by former company executive and Hydro-Quebec CEO Eric Martel.
  • Bellemare, who took over the top job at Bombardier in 2015, has steered the company through some of its biggest challenges, including a brush with bankruptcy due to its costly C Series jet program.
  • Under his watch, the company has narrowed its focus on making business jets, after offloading its stake in the A220 passenger jet program - formerly known as the C Series - to Airbus SE and selling the rail division to France's Alstom SA earlier this year.
  • Martel had worked with Bombardier for 13 years and was the president of its business aircraft unit before joining the hydropower producer as CEO in 2015.

SpiceJet Inks Pact with GMR Hyderabad Aviation SEZ

  • Budget carrier SpiceJet signed a pact with GMR Hyderabad Aviation SEZ Limited (GHASL) for setting up a warehousing, distribution and trading facility in the airport operator's aerospace and industrial park.
  • GAHSL is a fully-owned subsidiary of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL).
  • The facility, to be intially spread over in 33,000 sq feet area, will come up within the Free Trade Warehousing Zone of multi-product special economic zone (SEZ), SpiceJet said in a release.
  • It may be further expanded to 1,00,000 sq ft based on demand, it said.
  • GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park is housed in Hyderabad Airport City.
  • The park offers 'ready-to-use' industrial infrastructure with the flexibility of choosing land within SEZ for businesses focusing on foreign markets and land in domestic tariff area for businesses catering to the Indian market.

  • Pankaj Advani clinched the National 6-Red Snooker Championship with a convincing 7-3 final over Maharashtra's Ishpreet Singh in Ahmedabad. It is the 34th national title for Advani.
  • After trailing 1-3 in the summit clash, the 23-time world champion proved why he is the best in the business. He dazzled the Gujarat crowd with sublime potting and supreme safety play.

Anil Chaudhary Delhi Congress President

  • In an attempt to revamp the party unit in Delhi, the Congress appointed 44-year-old former legislator Anil Chaudhary as the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) chief.
  • Congress party's interim chief Sonia Gandhi also named five vice-presidents to assist Chaudhary in the state unit. Sitting councillor and Congress candidate in the 2020 state elections from Kasturba Nagar Abhishek Dutt, senior Congress leader JP Agarwal's son Mudit Agarwal, former MLA Jaikishan, the son of former Congress MLA from Mustafabad Hasan Ahmed, Ali Hassan, and the daughter of former Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra, Shivani Chopra have been chosen as vice-presidents of the Delhi Congress.
  • Last chief of the Delhi unit Subash Chopra had quit in February after the Congress failed to win even a single seat in the 2020 Delhi assembly elections.

Government Nominates Debasish Panda to RBI's Board

  • The Reserve Bank said that the Central Government has nominated Debasish Panda, Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, New Delhi as a Director on the Central Board of Reserve Bank of India vice Rajiv Kumar.
  • The nomination of Panda is effective from March 11, 2020 and until further orders.

UP to Depute 'Arogya Mitras' at PHCs

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said one 'Arogya Mitra' each will be deputed at all primary health centres in the state to inform people about health-related schemes being run by the government.
  • Adityanath was addressing a gathering after inaugurating 'Kaushal Satrang' programme organised by the Department of Vocational Education and Skill Development and Labour and Employment Exchange Department.
  • The 'Kaushal Satrang' programme is dedicated to generate employment and self-employment opportunities for the youth of the state.

Tata's New Defence Subsidiary Opened in Hyderabad

  • Tata Sons' subsidiary Tata Advanced System Limited (TASL) opened it's defence subsidiary NOVA Integrated Systems Limited in Hyderabad.
  • NISL will be bringing five new defence projects to Hyderabad which include mobile command and controls for Indian Army, mobile VSAT communication shelter, radar and microwave component manufacturing, electro optics and electronics manufacturing and R&D and prototyping facilities. This will create direct employment to 600 people and help the local defence supply chain to grow.
  • Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of NISL, IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao said, "I am glad to be here for the ground-breaking ceremony of NOVA Integrated Systems Limited (NISL), the Defence subsidiary of TASL. The growth of TATA group companies in Hyderabad during the past decade and in particular the past six years has been phenomenal. We are glad that you chose Hyderabad to host over 90 per cent of TASL Aerospace manufacturing and continue to further invest in our ecosystem."

Pi Day

  • Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (3/14 in the month/day format) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π.In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day.
  • Pi Approximation Day is observed on July 22 (22/7 in the day/month format), since the fraction 22⁄7 is a common approximation of π, which is accurate to two decimal places and dates from Archimedes.
  • Two Pi Day, also known as Tau Day for the mathematical constant Tau, is lightly observed on June 28 (6/28 in the month/day format).
  • In 1988, the earliest known official or large-scale celebration of Pi Day was organized by Larry Shaw at the San Francisco Exploratorium, where Shaw worked as a physicist, with staff and public marching around one of its circular spaces, then consuming fruit pies. The Exploratorium continues to hold Pi Day celebrations.
  • On March 12, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution (111 H. Res. 224), recognizing March 14, 2009 as National Pi Day.

CRPF Institutesd Shakti Award

  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) instituted a special 'Shakti Award.' It will be presented annually to chosen personnel who work for the empowerment of women.
  • The award was announced on International Women's Day on 8 March. The award will be conferred every year on 19 March, the CRPF Raising Day.
  • Women who work for creating women-friendly infrastructure, better work environment, ease of living with safety, addressing women-specific issues, and related innovation and initiatives will be awarded.
  • The award will carry a reward of Rs.1 lakh, a citation, and a trophy.
  • The award aims to recognise the best practices and efforts made towards women empowerment and gender equality in the force.
  • It aims to motivate CRPF personnel to do better and innovate in the field.
  • CRPF raised the world's first all-women battalion with strength of over 1,000 personnel in 1986. Currently, there are six such battalions.
