India Adds Checks To Rice Exports To European Union

  •  India has tightened the inspection norms for rice exports to the European Union.
  • The commerce and industry ministry amended the export policy for Basmati and non-Basmati rice from 'free' to outbound shipments subject to certificates issued by Export Inspection Council (EIC).
  • European Commission reduced maximum residues level for Tricyclazole to 0.01 parts per million (ppm) from 1 ppm for all crops in 2018. After 2018, the export of basmati from India to EU declined 38.35% and 9% in 2018-19 and 2019-20 (April-September) respectively, primarily due to the pesticide residue issue.

US House Passes Resolution Limiting Trump's Power To Carry Out Military Action Against Iran

  •  The US House of Representative adopted a war powers resolution that limits President Donald Trump's ability to carry out military actions against Iran without the prior approval of Congress.
  • The House voted 224-194 - with 13 votes outstanding - on Thursday in favour of the resolution which was introduced by Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin.
  • Slotkin has previously served as a CIA analyst specialized in Shia militias, as well as acting assistant secretary of defence for international security affairs.

IEA Launches First In-Depth Review Of India's Energy Policies

  •  In partnership with NITI Aayog, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released the first in-depth review of India's energy policies. 
  • The report highlights the achievements of India's energy policies and provides recommendations to support the government's goals of promoting well-functioning energy markets and boosting deployment of renewables. 
  • Dr Fatih Birol (Executive Director of the IEA) presented the key findings of the IEA in-depth review of India's energy policies in New Delhi in the presence of Shri Pralhad Joshi (Minister of Coal), Shri Dharmendra Pradhan (Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of Steel), Shri R K Singh (Minister for Power and Renewable Energy), Dr Rajiv Kumar (Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog), Shri Amitabh Kant (CEO of NITI Aayog), key energy secretaries, ambassadors, think tanks and the media.

Environment Ministry Notifies New Wetland Rules

  •  In a major decision, the union environment ministry notified the new Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules 2017 which prohibit a range of activities in wetlands like setting up and expansion of industries, waste dumping and discharge of effluents.
  • Environmental experts, however, are unhappy as they felt the new wetland rules seriously weakens the existing regulations.
  • The new rules will replace the 2010 version of the rules. The draft of the Wetland Rules was first presented by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in April 2016. But they were severely criticized by conservationists who had alleged that the draft rules don't mention anything about a national regulator and don't list specific activities prohibited in these ecologically sensitive areas.

10 New Bird Taxa Discovered In Islands Of Wallacea

  •  Birds are the best known class of animals, and since 1999, only five or six new species have been described each year on average. Recently, a joint research team from NUS and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) made a quantum leap in the discovery of cryptic avian diversity by uncovering five bird species and five subspecies new to science.
  • The team, led by Associate Professor Frank Rheindt from NUS Biological Sciences, found the birds in three small island groups off Sulawesi, Indonesia. The islands are situated in Indonesia's Wallacea region, an archipelago at the interface between the Oriental and Australian biogeographical realms, named after Sir Alfred Wallace, who was the most famous historical collector exploring the area.

RBI Launches Video-Based Identification Process For KYC

  •  The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)  launched Aadhaar-based Video Customer Identification Process (V-CIP) to allow banks and other lenders to remotely complete KYC of customers on videos. The central bank has allowed video-based KYC (Know Your Customer) as an option to establish a customer's identity.
  • The V-CIP, which will be consent-based, will make it easier for banks and other regulated entities to adhere to the RBI's KYC norms by leveraging the digital technology.

Govt. Inks Pact With KfW on Zero Budget Natural Farming

  •  The State government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with German firm KfW regarding Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF).
  • The MoU is aimed at encouraging natural farming in the State. As part it, the government has taken a loan of ₹711 crore out of the estimated amount of ₹1,015 crore earmarked for ZBNF.

Odisha Approves Rs 8000-Crore New Alumina Project By Hindalco

  •  The High Level Clearance Authority (HLCA), the apex body to clear investment projects in Odisha, approved a new greenfield alumina refinery unit, proposed by Aditya Birla Group-owned Hindalco Industries.
  •  It is estimated to cost Rs 8,000 crore, is proposed to come up at Kansariguda near Rayagada in Odisha. With an envisaged nameplate capacity of two million tonnes per annum, the project is expected to spawn employment for 4,250 people. 
  • Hindalco will bank on the Odisha government on raw material for feeding the refinery. This project is scheduled to go on stream in four to five years. Bauxite from any of the leases of Odisha Mining Corporation is likely to feed the planned refinery of Hindalco.

Hubble Detects Smallest Known Dark Matter Clumps

  •  Using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and a new observing technique, astronomers have found that dark matter forms much smaller clumps than previously known. This result confirms one of the fundamental predictions of the widely accepted "cold dark matter" theory.
  • All galaxies, according to this theory, form and are embedded within clouds of dark matter. Dark matter itself consists of slow-moving, or "cold," particles that come together to form structures ranging from hundreds of thousands of times the mass of the Milky Way galaxy to clumps no more massive than the heft of a commercial airplane. (In this context, "cold" refers to the particles' speed.)
  • The Hubble observation yields new insights into the nature of dark matter and how it behaves. "We made a very compelling observational test for the cold dark matter model and it passes with flying colors," said Tommaso Treu of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), a member of the observing team.

Government Releases State Energy Efficiency Index 2019

  •  Union Government released the State Energy Efficiency Index 2019, which tracks the progress of Energy Efficiency initiatives in 36 States and Union Territories. Power Minister R K Singh released the index in New Delhi. 
  • The index is developed by Bureau of Energy Efficiency in association with Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy. 
  • It will help states to contribute towards national goals on energy security and climate action by helping drive Energy Efficiency policies and programmme implementation at the state and local level.

Gujarat Agro Industries Launches Imported Water-Soluble Fertilisers

  •  In a bid to encourage use of high-grade agri-inputs, the Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation (GAIC) has launched imported water-soluble fertilisers in Ahmedabad.
  • The state agency, which promotes agro-based industries in Gujarat, has already imported 300 tonnes of water-soluble fertilizers from China.
  • GAIC's role will be to import, package and sell the imported water-soluble fertilisers to the farmers through its network of dealers across the State. The new-generation fertilizers will be sold in the market under its brand - 'AGRO'. It also plans to launch customised grades of stage-specific and crop-specific fertilizers.

Crime In India Increased By 1.3% In 2018: NCRB

  •  Crime in India has increased by 1.3% in 2018 compared to 2017 with the registration of over 50 lakh cognisable crimes, reveals 2018 edition of 'Crime in India' statistics released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
  • As per the NCRB, which works under the Ministry of Home Affairs, a total of 50.74 lakh crimes, including 31.32 lakh under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 19.41 under the Special Local Laws (SLL) was registered in 2018.

Narendra Modi Fifth Biggest Geo-Political Risk Of 2020

  •  India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been listed as the fifth biggest geo-political risk of 2020, by the political risk consultancy – the Eurasia Group – in a list that is topped by elections in the US and followed by events and developments like the US-China technology tug of war on 5G as well as the trade war between Beijing and Washington.
  • According to Ian Bremmer (Eurasia Group president) and Cliff Kupchan (Eurasia Group chairman), Modi has spent much of his second term--since winning the April-May 2019 poll--promoting controversial social policies at the expense of an economic agenda.

SC Stays NCLAT Order Restoring Cyrus Mistry As Tata Sons' Chairman

  •  The Supreme Court stayed in toto the NCLAT order restoring Cyrus Mistry as executive chairman of the Tata Group, observing that there were "lacunae" in the orders passed by the Tribunal. 
  • A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant said the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) decision suffers from "basic errors and we have to hear the matter in detail".

Veteran Broadcaster, Academic-Poet Obaid Siddiqui Passes Away

  •  Veteran broadcaster, poet and academician Obaid Siddiqui passed away in a Ghaziabad hospital due to health related problems.
  • Siddiqui, 63, was quite unwell due to multiple ailments and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kaushambi, Ghaziabad where he breathed his last.
  • Born in Meerut in 1957, Siddiqui received higher education a the Aligarh Muslim University and joined the All India Radio at Srinagar station in 1988.

  •  Wings India 2020, an international exhibition and conference on civil aviation sector, will be held at Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad from March 12 to 15.
  • At a curtain raiser event here, Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri sought active participation from the stakeholders for the same. Pursuant to the success of Wings 2019, MOCA and FICCI is organising WINGS India 2020, "providing a congenial forum catering to the rapidly changing dynamics of the sector, focusing on new business acquisition, investments, policy formation and regional connectivity."

India Pulses And Grains Association Announces 'The Pulses Conclave 2020'

  •  India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), the nodal body for India's pulses trade and industry today announced that the fifth edition 'The Pulses Conclave', their biennial global pulses conference will be held from Feb. 12th to 14th, 2020 at Amby Valley City in Lonavala, Maharashtra.
  • IPGA expects close to 1500 trade stakeholders from India and key pulses exporting countries like the USA, Australia, Canada, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, etc. to participate in 'The Pulses Conclave 2020' (TPC 2020). The Pulses Conclave 2020, as a part of its agenda, will not just discuss increasing domestic production and consumption but will also bring to fore other areas of the trade like improving processing efficiencies, increasing consumption, exports, value addition, protein extraction, post-harvest crop management, etc.

Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Mohan Reddy Launches 'Amma Vodi' Scheme

  •  The Andhra Pradesh government launched the 'Amma Vodi' scheme. Mothers and guardians of school-going children from lower income groups will get financial assistance of Rs 15,000 annually under the scheme.
  • Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy launched the scheme, which was a key poll promise of his party YSRCP. Amma Vodi translates to 'mother's lap' in Telugu.

Kerala CM Announces Wage Subsidy Scheme For New Ventures

  •  Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan unveiled a set of path-breaking initiatives that will enhance the ease of doing business in the state including a wage subsidy scheme for the first five years for new ventures getting registered from April 1, 2020.
  • Inaugurating the two-day ASCEND Kerala 2020 global investors meet, organised by the state department of industries, in Kochi, showcasing over 100 major projects before the leaders of industry.

Forest Committee Approves Scheme To 'Trade' In Forests

  •  The Forest Advisory Committee, an apex body tasked with adjudicating requests by the industry to raze forest land for commercial ends, has approved a scheme that could allow "forests" to be traded as a commodity. If implemented, it allows the Forest Department to outsource one of its responsibilities of reforesting to non-government agencies.
  • In the current system, industry needs to make good the loss of forest by finding appropriate non-forest land — equal to that which would be razed. It also must pay the State Forest Department the current economic equivalent — called Net Present Value — of the forest land. It's then the Forest Department's responsibility to grow appropriate vegetation that, over time, would grow into forests.
