The Maldives's Parliament overwhelmingly voted Mohamed Nasheed as the Speaker of the house. He received 67 votes from among 87 members. The Speaker in Maldives also has a role in the Judicial Services Commission that regulates the Supreme Court.
Pakistan Extends Airspace Ban on Indian Flights
Pakistani authorities decided to extend a ban on commercial flights to and from India using its airspace until June 15. The ban was originally set to last until the end of May.
Losing heavily on overflying charges, Pakistani officials say they are keen to remove airspace restriction for airlines flying to and from India, provided New Delhi decreases army build-up on the border between the two neighbouring countries.
In February, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority announced the closure of the country's airspace for commercial flights.
The Maharashtra cabinet cleared a proposal to extend the exemption from electricity duty for industries in Vidarbha and Marathwada till 2024. The exemption is expected to boost industries and create employment in the regio. Ahead of the Assembly polls slated in October, this is also one of the first sops for these backward regions.
The exemption was first introduced on March 21, 2013 by the erstwhile Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) government for five years, which ended on March 20, 2019.
Currently, for industries where electricity duty is levied, industrial units pay 9.30% of the consumption charges as electricity duty. Industries including micro, small, medium in C, D and D+ category industrial areas and Maoist-affected areas will benefit from the decision. The exemption is expected to add a burden of Rs. 600 crore annually on the state government.
Rajapalayam Mills to Merge A.P. Unit
As per reports, Rajapalayam Mills Ltd. (RML), a Ramco Group company, decided to merge its spinning mill in Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) with its mother plant in Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu.
RML has a total installed capacity of about 1.38 lakh spindles and 5,480 rotors, of which 4,800 spindles and 1,800 rotors are in A.P.
As of March 31, 2019, the AP unit generated a revenue of Rs. 38.43 crore and this constituted 9% of RML's total revenue.
Chola Investment Gets Investment from International Finance Corp.
Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co. Ltd. (CIFCL), a Murugappa Group company, received an investment of $222 million from a foreign investor anchored by the IFC.
This is the company's first U.S. dollar-syndicated deal since January 2019, when RBI permitted NBFCs to tap into offshore credit market. CIFCL would use the funds to help small road transport operators (SRTOs) and micro, small and medium (MSMEs) borrowers, especially in the rural and semi-urban areas.
The present round of funding was anchored by IFC, a member of the World Bank Group.
The next edition of the Asia Cup could also be UAE-bound with Pakistan given the hosting rights of the tournament in 2020, as organising it in its own country will cast serious doubts on India's participation owing to diplomatic tensions.
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in its meeting in Singapore awarded the continental meet, to be held in T20 format, to Pakistan, which will most likely organise it in the neutral venues of the United Arab Emirates.

Khandu Takes Oath as Arunachal Pradesh CM
Six days after securing the first electoral victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Arunachal Pradesh in the assembly polls, Pema Khandu took oath as the northeastern state's Chief Minister for the second time.
Khandu, who has been in the CM's chair since July 2016 and witnessed several twists and turns in the state's politics, was administered the oath of office by Governor BD Misra.
Eleven ministers were also sworn in.
Jaitley Opts Out of PM Modi's New Team
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him not to give him any responsibility in the new government due to health reasons. The finance minister's letter comes a day before PM Modi begins his second term in office.
The minister added that he would, however, be able to undertake any work informally to support the government or the party.
Arun Jaitley's decision implies that PM Modi will have to induct a new Finance Minister in his second term.

UN Dedicates August 22 to Victims of Religious Violence
The UN General Assembly has declared August 22 as the International Day for Victims of Religious Violence to combat hate crimes and persecution on the basis of beliefs.
Recalling the wave of attacks that targeted a mosque in New Zealand and churches in Sri Lanka during Easter Sunday services, Poland's Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz, who introduced the resolution, said that the international day will honour the victims and survivors of religious violence who are often forgotten.
The resolution is not focused on victims of any particular religion or belief and seeks to raise respect for religious diversity.
Pakistan, along with the US, was one of the nine sponsors of the resolution.
The Cabinet gave its approval for merging the three school directorates in the general education sector.
The Directorate of Public Instruction, the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education, and the Directorate of Vocational Higher Secondary Education will be merged to form the Directorate of General Education as per the recommendations of the Khader committee set up to study school education. An IAS official will head the directorate.
The meeting decided to implement the committee's recommendation in phases. The first phase will be implemented this academic year.
