Re-poll Ordered for Istanbul Election

  •  Turkey's top election body ordered a re-run of the Istanbul mayoral election after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's party complained about its shock defeat.
  • The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) narrowly lost in the March 31 local election for Mayor.

Ceasefire along Gaza

  •  Palestinian leaders in Gaza announced a ceasefire with Israel to end a deadly two-day escalation in violence that threatened to widen into a fourth war between them since 2008.
  • Egypt brokered the agreement to cease hostilities.

RBI Raises Cap on Home Loans

  •  The Reserve Bank of India increased the eligibility cap on home loans extended by regional rural banks and small finance banks to Rs. 35 lakh in metropolitan areas and Rs. 25 lakh in other centres, provided the overall cost of the dwelling unit in the metropolitan centres and other centres does not exceed Rs. 45 lakh and Rs. 30 lakh.
  • All such loans will be now classified by these banks as priority sector loans.
  • In addition, the existing family income limit of Rs. 2 lakh per annum to be eligible for loans for housing projects exclusively for construction of houses for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Low Income Groups (LIG) is revised to Rs. 3 lakh per annum for EWS and Rs. 6 lakh per annum for LIG, in alignment with the income criteria specified under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

U.S. Firms to Join Department of Commerce

  • The U.S. Commercial Service will bring more than 100 U.S. companies to India as part of the U.S. Department of Commerce's largest annual trade mission program, 'Trade Winds'.
  • Trade Winds Indo-Pacific features a three-day business forum in New Delhi, with additional trade mission stops in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Bangladesh.
  • At each mission stop, the attending companies will meet directly with government leaders, market experts and pre-vetted potential business partners.

Mastercard to Invest in India

  •  Mastercard announced a $1 billion investment in India over the next five years aimed at converting India into a vital node in the company's infrastructure, and also to continue business expansion.
  • According to Ari Sarker, co-president, Asia Pacific at Mastercard, what is interesting in this investment is that roughly $300 million is going to go into an investment where India will become a part of our global technology nodes of our network.
  • Mastercard has previously invested $1 billion in India over the last five years.

Vaidehi Chaudhari Defeats Soha Sadiq

  •  The final of $3000 FinIQ–ATT Asian Ranking Women's tennis championship turned out to be a one-sided affair as wild card Vaidehi Chaudhari of Ahmedabad easily defeated Soha Sadiq from Bengaluru at Metrocity Sports Club, Kothrud.
  • Chaudhari trains at Altevol tennis academy in Ahmedabad under coach Jignesh Rawal.
  • The winner Chaudhari got Rs. 31,500 and 40 points, while the runner up Soha Sadiq received Rs. 21,000 and 25 points.

Anmol Jain and Esha Singh Win Team Bronze

  •  Anmol Jain and Esha Singh won the mixed air pistol team bronze medal in the Grand Prix of Liberation international shooting competition.
  • The India-A team, which topped qualification with 776 out of 800, lost the race for better medals by 2.5 points to the Austrian and Italian teams.
  • The other Indian team of Deepak Sharma and Annu Raj Singh also made the final, shot in the old format with the top five teams, but ended up fifth.

CJI Gets a Clean Chit

  •  The Justice S. A. Bobde in-house committee has found no substance in the sexual harassment allegations levelled by a former Supreme Court staff member against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.
  • A statement issued by the Supreme Court said that the committee's report would be kept confidential. As part of the in-house procedure, the report would not be placed in the public domain.

Fifth Phase Ends amid Violence

  •  The fifth phase of the Lok Sabha election across 51 constituencies in seven States witnessed several incidents of violence in West Bengal and Jammu & Kashmir.
  • The overall tentative turnout stood at 63.26% as against 61.75% in 2014.
  • More than 81% of the polling stations in this phase were located in rural areas. With the conclusion of this round, 78% of the Lok Sabha election is now over.

Largest Ever Indo-French Naval Exercise

  •  For the first time, two aircraft carriers of the Indian and French Navies, the INS Vikramaditya and the FNS Charles de Gaulle, will lead their respective countries in the largest ever Indo-French naval exercises Varuna 2019.
  • The exercise will involve eight ships and two submarines.
  • The sea phase will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will be held off Goa from May 7 to May 10, 2019 and would include anti submarine exercises, live firing drills, naval helicopter operations, and basic to advanced level exercises for carrier borne fighter aircraft.
  • A second sea phase will take place off Djibouti later in May.
  • The Indian Navy's Western Naval Command will be participating in the exercise.

INS Ranjit Decommissioned

  •  INS Ranjit, a Rajput class destroyer, was decommissioned at naval dockyard Visakhapatnam.
  • The decommissioning ceremony was attended by officers and sailors of the commissioning crew as well as others who were part of Ranjit`s voyage over the last 36 years.
  • The ship was commissioned on September 15, 1983 by Captain Vishnu Bhagwat in erstwhile USSR.

Deadline to Secure Admissions under RTE Act Extended

  •  The state education department has extended the deadline for getting admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act till May 10.
  • This decision has been taken as 24,124 seats under RTE are remaining as on May 4, the earlier deadline.
  • Out of the total 67,706 seats declared in the first lottery which was declared in April, only 44,110 admissions have been taken in the state.
  • Considering the lesser number of admissions taken, Sunil Chauhan, director of the state primary education department, has extended the deadline for the second time.
