World Teachers’ Day was observed on 5 October 2026 to recognise teachers’ contributions and highlight their rights, professional status and working conditions. The 2026 observance marks 60 years since the 1966 ILO-UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. The theme is Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures. UNESCO emphasises challenges such as recognition, workload, technology changes and institutional support, calling on governments to provide resources, training and safe working conditions. In India, education departments organized seminars, teacher exchanges and public campaigns to celebrate teachers nationwide. The day also features awards for outstanding teachers and reflections on improving access to quality education.
