BEL and Esri India sign MoU to boost defence geospatial capabilities

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Esri India signed an MoU in August 2026 to strengthen geospatial capabilities for India's defence sector. The partnership focuses on GIS, Location Intelligence and GeoAI-based solutions for defence projects, enabling better mapping, planning and decision support. BEL will contribute its expertise in defence electronics and systems integration, while Esri India's geospatial technology will provide software platforms, data tools and analytics. The collaboration includes indigenous development and training using the Indo ArcGIS platform, enabling soldiers and engineers to access tailored geospatial workflows. The partners aim to accelerate digitisation in procurement, logistics and mission planning while safeguarding sensitive information.

India-US Navy EOD Exercise begins in Kochi on 10 August 2026

The 8th India-US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Exercise began at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi on 10 August 2026. The five-day bilateral exercise runs through 14 August and involves joint training, equipment demonstrations and practical drills by specialist diving and EOD teams. Participants include navies' EOD personnel from both countries, with observers from allied services. The drills focus on mine countermeasures, underwater reconnaissance, explosive disruption and recovery operations in complex harbour and littoral environments. Organisers say the exercise aims to improve interoperability, standard operating procedures, and rapid response capabilities essential for disaster relief and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific.

Bhawana Kanth becomes first Indian woman to clear Fighter Combat Leader course

Indian Air Force Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth has become the first Indian woman pilot to clear the Fighter Combat Leader (FCL) course. She completed the demanding programme at the TACDE in Gwalior, where selected fighter pilots are trained in advanced air-combat tactics, leadership and mission planning. IAF Conducts ROTOR CLAP III to Counter Drone Threats

The Indian Air Force conducted Exercise ROTOR CLAP III at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan. The third edition focused on countering unmanned aerial system threats and enhancing overall readiness. The exercise integrated helicopter units from across the Indian Air Force to validate and improve counter-drone capabilities, including detection, tracking, and interdiction. It involved joint drills with ground-based air defense and airborne platforms, emphasizing rapid response, coordination, and intelligence sharing. Military Medicine Department inaugurated at Lucknow

India inaugurated its first dedicated Department of Military Medicine at the Command Hospital of the Central Command in Lucknow. The department will coordinate training and research in combat medicine, trauma care and military surgery for the Armed Forces Medical Services. Officials say the unit will establish a centre of excellence for battlefield medicine, emergency care and rehabilitation, while conducting clinical research and publishing guidelines. The new department aims to boost medical readiness, attract specialists, and strengthen military medical education for on-duty personnel and veterans, aligning with broader efforts to enhance health infrastructure within defence services.

Diving Support Vessel Nipun delivered to Indian Navy

The indigenous Diving Support Vessel Nipun was delivered to the Indian Navy on 30 July 2026. It is the second vessel of its class after INS Nistar and was built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam. The vessel can support deep-sea diving, underwater rescue and recovery missions, and assist submarines and naval personnel during underwater emergencies. Nipun, like Nistar, demonstrates India’s growing capabilities in indigenous defence manufacturing and shipbuilding under Make in India. The delivery complements the navy’s existing deep-sea operations and enhances its ability to respond to underwater incidents across the Indian Ocean Region.
