India ranks 131st in Global Gender Gap Index 2026

India ranked 131st among 145 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index 2026, with an overall gender-parity score of 64.5 percent. The report is published by the World Economic Forum and measures gaps between women and men in economic participation, education, health and political empowerment. The top three positions were held by Iceland, Finland and Norway. The index notes modest progress in some areas but persistent challenges in others. Observers say improvements in female labor force participation and political representation are needed to close the gap further. The Indian government has launched schemes to boost skills, safety and entrepreneurship for women.

Tripura records zero primary school dropout rate for 2025–26

Tripura has achieved a milestone in education, recording zero primary school dropout rate for Classes 1–5 in the 2025–26 academic year, according to UDISE+ data released in September 2026. The state reduced its dropout rate from 2.21% in 2013–14 to zero in 2025–26, while secondary dropout also declined. Authorities credit foundational education reforms, including the NIPUN Bharat Mission and Saksham Tripura, which focus on learning outcomes, early literacy, and learner support. The achievement aligns with national goals to improve school participation and data accuracy. International Literacy Day 2026 observed with global theme

International Literacy Day (ILD) 2026 was observed on 8 September under the theme Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity. UNESCO established ILD in 1966, and global celebrations have taken place since 1967. The 60th anniversary of ILD highlighted the link between literacy and human development, environmental sustainability, and social equity. Governments and NGOs highlighted programs to accelerate literacy rates, especially for marginalised groups, and emphasized digital tools to support learning. Birkbeck to Establish Bengaluru Campus After UGC Approval

UGC-NET June 2026 results declared for 84 subjects

The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the results of the UGC-NET June 2026 examination for 84 subjects, making the results accessible to candidates on the official portal. The release comes amid ongoing reforms to simplify and strengthen higher-education assessments. Every candidate can download their scorecard using login credentials. In a related update, NTA said English, Commerce and Sociology papers will be re-conducted on September 9–10, 2026, due to identified irregularities in the June session. More than 4,000 candidates qualified for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), reflecting strong competition and sustained demand for research careers. The agency also disclosed preparation steps for future exam cycles.
