Every year, Global Family Day is observed on January 1 to encourage the idea of peace and unity in the world. Additionally, it highlights the notion that everyone on the planet is related to one another regardless of nationality, borders, or ethnicity.
In 1997, the United Nations General Assembly declared the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World. One important project was the release of the book One Day in Peace – on January 1, 2000.
In 1999, all UN member states were encouraged to spend the first day of the year creating plans on maintaining peace. Due to the success of this day, the UN declared Global Family Day an annual event in 2001.
