Defence Ministry Signs over Rs. 10,000-crore Contract for Pinaka Rocket System

  • The government inked contracts worth more than Rs. 10,000 crore with defence entities for procurement of Area Denial Munition Type-1 and high-explosive rockets with enhanced range for Pinaka multiple launch rocket system, seeking to enhance Indian Army's firepower capabilities. The defence ministry in a statement also said that a contract for upgrade in Shakti software was also signed with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
  • The ministry inked contracts with Economic Explosive Limited (EEL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL) for "procurement of Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type-1 (DPICM) and High Explosive Pre Fragmented (HEPF) Mk-1 (Enhanced) rockets respectively for Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) at a total cost of Rs. 10,147 crore.

Iran Inaugurates Its First Drone-carrier Warship

  • Iran inaugurated its first drone-carrier warship, saying the vessel is capable of operating in oceans far from its mainland.
  • The vessel, manned by the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard's navy, can carry several squadrons of drones as well as helicopters and cruise missiles. Named 'Shahid Bagheri,' it's capable of launching cruise missiles.
  • With a 180-meter-long runway for drones, the vessel can travel up to 22,000 nautical miles without needing to refuel in ports.

  • India and Israel successfully held the 13th round of Staff Talks in New Delhi, which focused upon improving several areas of defence cooperation such as joint training, technology sharing, and regional security.
  • According to the Indian Army, this strategic dialogue reaffirmed the commitment to mutual growth in defence capabilities, fostering deeper bilateral ties between the two nations united by shared interests and trust.

India Reaffirms Support to Bhutan

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, at a meeting with Bhutan's top military general, reaffirmed India's readiness to support Bhutan in capability enhancement for defence preparedness, including provisioning of defence equipment and assets to augment capacities of Bhutan, as per its national priorities and in line with India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy.
  • The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Royal Bhutan Army (RBA) Lt Gen Batoo Tshering called on Singh in New Delhi and held discussions encompassing a variety of issues on bilateral relations.

Indian Army and IIT Guwahati to Develop Epoxy Bamboo-based Composites

  • In a move towards innovation and self-reliance, the Indian Army's Gajraj Corps signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati for the research, design, and fabrication of epoxy bamboo-based composites.
  • Bamboo-based composites could replace traditional building materials used in the construction of bunkers in high-altitude areas.
  • The project will culminate in the construction of multiple defence works in high-altitude terrain for field trials, where they will be subjected to small arms fire and endure an entire weather cycle,.
  • The fabricated panels will provide the same level of protection, albeit with reduced weight, which will decrease the time and effort required for ferrying supplies, ultimately enhancing force preservation.

India-Maldives Joint Military Exercise

  • The 13th edition of two week long joint military exercise 'Ekuverin' between the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force commenced in Maldives.
  • Ekuverin meaning 'Friends' in Dhivehi language is a bilateral annual exercise conducted alternatively in India and Maldives. In 2023, it was conducted at Chaubatia in Uttarakhand in June.
  • The 14-day exercise, which concludes on February 15 is aimed at enhancing interoperability in counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations, and carry out joint humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
