IAF Gets New Vice Chief, Tri-services New CISC, Army New Northern Army Commander

Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma took over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the strategically crucial Northern Command, following the retirement of Lieutenant General M. V. Suchindra Kumar.
Headquartered at Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, the Northern Command is tasked with operational responsibilities along both Pakistan and China borders, as well as counter-terrorism operations.
In the Indian Air Force, Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari was appointed as Vice Chief, succeeding Air Marshal S. P. Dharkar, who superannuated.
The third top-level change was in the tri-services structure. Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, was appointed the new Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC). He replaced Lt Gen J. P. Mathew, who retired.

Top Military Spenders of 2024-25: India's Position in the Global Military Expenditure Race

In 2024-25, the global military expenditure saw a remarkable rise, with nations allocating significant portions of their GDP to defence. Among the largest spenders, India secured its place as the fifth-highest military spender globally, reinforcing its growing strategic defence capabilities.
As the world's largest military spender, the U.S. accounted for 37% of global military expenditure in 2024, with a spending of $997 billion. This reflects its ongoing military dominance and strategic investments in defence technologies.
The second-largest spender, China, allocated $314 billion, making up 12% of global defense expenditure. China's rising military budget is indicative of its expanding geopolitical ambitions, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
Despite economic challenges, Russia's military spending reached $149 billion, contributing 5.5% to global military expenditure. The country's defence budget has grown in response to ongoing conflicts, most notably the war in Ukraine.

India-France Ink Pact to Procure 26 Rafale Jets

India and France inked an inter-governmental agreement to procure 26 naval variants of Rafale fighter jets at a cost of around Rs. 64,000 crore for the Indian Navy. The pact was sealed at a virtual event.
The delivery of these aircraft would be completed by 2030.
Of the 26 Rafale Aircraft 22 are single-seater and four twin-seater.

China Tests a Revolutionary Type of Hydrogen Bomb

China successfully tested a new hydrogen-based explosive device. This breakthrough, developed by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), marks a step forward in China's military capabilities. Unlike traditional hydrogen bombs, which rely on nuclear fusion, this device uses a chemical reaction involving magnesium hydride. The result is a powerful fireball capable of producing sustained heat, with no nuclear materials involved.
The hydrogen bomb tested by China weighs just 2 kilograms and operates on a completely different mechanism than traditional nuclear bombs.

Indian Air Force conducts "Exercise Aakraman

The Indian Air Force conducted a large-scale wargame -- "Exercise Aakraman" -- in the central sector, focusing on enhancing offensive capabilities across both mountainous and ground-based terrains. The exercise covered a large area in the central sector, involving its mainstream fighter aircraft fleets led by the Rafale combat jets.
The aim of the exercise is to provide Air Force pilots with combat-realistic training scenarios, including engagements that mimic high-intensity conflict environments.
