Chess Grandmaster Carlsen Wins at Esports World Cup

  • World number-one Magnus Carlsen became the first ever Chess Esports World Cup Champion after winning the final three games and beat GM Alireza Firouzja in the Grand Final. Carlsen took the $250,000 top prize and saw his Team Liquid sneak ahead in the overall championship. GM Hikaru Nakamura overcame GM Arjun Erigaisi 3.5-2.5 and took third place in a thrilling match where all but one of the six games was decisive.

India Women's Wrestling Team Shines at U-17 World Wrestling Championship with Six Medals

  • At the 2025 Under-17 World Championship in Athens (Greece), the Indian women wrestlers showcased their dominance on the world stage.
  • The Indian women's wrestling team secured a total of 6 medals--2 Gold, 3 Silver, and 1 Bronze, bringing glory to the nation, according to a release from the Wrestling Federation of India.
  • The Indian women's wrestling team clinched the Champion Trophy with 151 points, while the USA finished as runners-up with 142 points, and Japan secured the third position with 113 points.
  • The annual tournament concluded on August 3, 2025.

Khalid Jamil Named India Coach

  • Jamil, who is currently the coach of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, became the first Indian to coach the national team after 13 years. Savio Madeira was the last home-grown coach to be given the top job in October 2011. His stint lasted till March 2012.
  • Jamil, replaced Manolo Marquez, was selected from a shortlist of three coaches, which included former India coach Stephen Constantine and Slovakian manager Stefan Tarkovic.

Punjab Government Lifts Ban on Heritage Sports

  • In a historic move, the Punjab government lifted the long-standing ban on traditional heritage sports, including bullock cart races, dog races, horse races, and pigeon racing, marking a revival of the state's cultural identity. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, while addressing a gathering in Ludhiana, said that the decision fulfils the government's promise to the people of Punjab to bring back their much-loved rural traditions.
  • The ban on these sports had been in place since 1997, with concerns over alleged animal cruelty. However, the new legislation introduced by the state government ensures that these events will now be held across Punjab without cruelty to animals.

India Shines at the 20th Asian Roller-Skating Championship in South Korea

  • The 20th Asian Roller-Skating Championship which was held in South Korea, concluded with record-breaking participation and standout performances from athletes across the continent. Governed by the Confederation of Asian Roller Sports (CARS), the prestigious event brought together over 600 skaters from 22 countries, competing across multiple disciplines including speed, inline hockey, freestyle, and artistic roller-skating. One of the standout moments of the tournament was when India's Naisha Nishit Mehta struck gold, becoming the first Indian junior skater to top the podium in this event on an international stage.
  • Regarded as one of Asia's premier skating tournaments, the championship is known for showcasing top-tier talent and providing a platform for emerging skaters to make their mark on the international stage.

World Athletics Introduces New Eligibility Regulations for Female Category

  • The World Athletics Council announced a significant change in its eligibility rules for the female category in world ranking competitions. Starting September 1, 2025, all athletes wishing to participate in the female category will be required to undergo a once-in-a-lifetime SRY gene test, a reliable biological marker for determining sex.
  • The SRY gene (Sex-determining Region Y) test will be conducted through a cheek swab or blood test, whichever is more convenient for the athlete. The test will be administered under the supervision of Member Federations, ensuring authenticity and compliance.

Hardeep Singh, India's First U17 Greco Roman World Champion

  • Hardeep Singh became India's first under-17 world champion in the 110kg weight class of Greco-Roman style, recovering from a 0-2 deficit after the first round and beat Iran's Yazdan Delrouz 3-2 in a nail-biting final.
  • According to United World Wrestling, this is the heaviest weight class India has ever won a gold medal at the World U17 level.

India's First Ever Tech-driven Girls Football Academy Launched in Collaboration with AIFF

  • Hindustan Zinc Ltd, in partnership with the All India Football Federation (AIFF), launched the Zinc Football Girls Academy in Zawar, near Udaipur, Rajasthan — a first-of-its-kind, tech-enabled grassroots football initiative for girls. The AIFF will act as the academy's strategic and technical partner, providing operational guidelines, technical expertise, best practices, and training support for coaches and scouts.
  • At the heart of the academy is F-Cube Training and Assessment Technology, a unique player development system that uses continuous data tracking, analysis, and monitoring to optimise performance. The fully residential academy boasts world-class facilities and has inducted its first batch of 20 talented girls under the age of 15 from Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Bengal, Haryana, and Jharkhand.

Nepal to Host ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 Qualifier

  • Nepal to host the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 Qualifier from January 12 to February 2 next year, as per the official website of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
  • Ten teams will battle it out for four coveted spots at the main event, set to take place in England and Wales in 2026.
  • Bangladesh and Ireland have earned automatic spots in the Qualifier by virtue of their participation in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024.
  • Thailand and Nepal qualified through the Asia regional pathway, while the USA secured their place from the Americas region.
  • The remaining five spots will be filled by two teams each from Africa and Europe and one from the East Asia-Pacific region, following the completion of their respective regional Qualifiers.

Indian Men's Football Team to Play CAFA Nations Cup

  • India's senior men's national football team will participate in the 2025 Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup as part of their preparations for the final round of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers. The tournament is scheduled to be held from August 31 to September 8 at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan.
  • India received an invitation to take part in the tournament after Malaysia withdrew due to logistical challenges and the unavailability of players. The tournament falls outside the official FIFA calendar.

Kolkata Knight Riders Part Ways with Head Coach Chandrakant Pandit

  • Kolkata Knight Riders announced that head coach Chandrakant pandit will not be continuing with the franchise anymore.

100 Years of Indian Hockey: HI Announces Enhanced Grants and Nationwide Festival

  • As Indian hockey marks its glorious 100-year journey, Hockey India (HI) announced landmark initiatives to boost the sport's growth and celebrate its legacy. At the 15th Hockey India Congress held in Mahabalipuram on July 27, 2025, HI unveiled a major increase in financial grants for national and grassroots-level tournaments and announced a nationwide hockey festival scheduled for November 7, 2025.
  • In a bid to strengthen infrastructure and expand participation, Hockey India will now allocate Rs. 70 lakh each for the senior men's and senior women's National Championships. For the Junior and Sub-Junior categories, both men and women, Rs. 30 lakh each will be provided to ensure quality competitions and better exposure for young athletes.
