  • Cyclone Montha made landfall on the Andhra coast near Narasapur. The strong gales uprooted the trees and electric poles in the coastal districts.
  • Montha name was given by Thailand, one of the 13 countries that contribute cyclone names for the North Indian Ocean region. In Thai, Montha means a fragrant flower or beautiful flower.

India Hosts 8th International Solar Alliance Assembly

  • India is hosting the 8th Session of the International Solar Alliance Assembly from October 27 to 30 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event brings the global community together to deepen cooperation and accelerate solar adoption for a brighter and sustainable future. Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said that the member countries will review progress, address challenges, and align actions toward one vision – affordable solar energy for all.
  • The International Solar Alliance is an international organisation with 124 Member and Signatory countries. It works with governments to improve energy access and security worldwide and promote solar power as a sustainable transition to a carbon-neutral future.
  • The theme for the 8th International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly in 2025 is 'One Sun, One World, One Grid'.

Chennai Becomes First City to Launch Real-Time Flood Forecasting System

  • In a step toward strengthening urban disaster management, Chennai became the first Indian city to fully implement a Real-Time Flood Forecasting and Spatial Decision Support System (RTFF & SDSS). Operational since October 2025, this system significantly enhances Chennai's capability to predict, manage, and respond to urban floods, marking a milestone in climate resilience infrastructure. This initiative is particularly significant as Chennai is frequently affected by seasonal monsoon flooding, and accurate forecasting can save lives, minimize damage, and support smarter urban planning.

SAIME Aquaculture Model from Sundarbans Earns FAO Global Recognition

  • In an endorsement of India's green innovation, the Sustainable Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystems (SAIME) model, developed by the Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS), received Global Technical Recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. This award places the Sundarbans region on the global map for pioneering a climate-adaptive, conservation-linked aquaculture model that balances ecological preservation with rural livelihoods, particularly through the cultivation of native black tiger shrimp.
  • The SAIME initiative is a multi-stakeholder partnership (MSP) that transforms shrimp aquaculture in mangrove-rich regions of South Asia. It aims to create an ecosystem-based standard that protects mangroves while enhancing farmer incomes through sustainable shrimp farming.

India Rises to Ninth Position Globally in Forest Area, Retains Third Spot in Annual Forest Gain

  • India climbed to the ninth position globally in total forest area, according to the Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) 2025 released by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Bali.
  • Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced the achievement, noting that India also retained its 3rd position worldwide in annual forest area gain, reaffirming the country's steady progress in sustainable forest management.
